    Crossfingers Extended Auto Warranty?

So, i want to trade in my old car, & I will..in the meantime, I was thinking of getting an extended warranty, & transferring it when I get the new(er) car.

I'm looking online, a lot of them seem kinda..eh.

    What is YOUR

    Opinion?

    Thank you!!!

Edit: I have AAA membership, Premier (for the towing privledges) they don't offer extended warranty tho.

    IMO depends on the vehicle.

If it's something easy to source parts for (ex. a Chevrolet) and fairly easy to fix, insurance would be wasted money.

Also if you live near pick and pulls/ decent garages and mechanics, you should just save you money and fix things as they happen.

Extra insurance might be a good idea for rare vehicles or certain foreign vehicles, but for an average everyday driver, I don't think so.

BTW most vehicles have values that plummet, no matter what you do. Plus living in a Snow Belt area damages vehicles, even if you try hard to fight it (garaging, washing, undercoat, etc.) In the end extra insurance might be pointless when you'd be best served selling the vehicle as-is and buying something else.

You could move to Texas, where your car wont rust away the way it will up north.

Side note- years ago I asked a guy at a new car dealership where I could get new rims for my (at the time) nice import.

His opinion was even with the car being nice itself, it was too old (in a Kelley Blue Book sense) to be buying new rims to put on, when I could look for some original used ones.

The blunt truth is most people cannot afford to "throw money away" on vehicles. Not everyone is Jay Leno. Not directed at you OP, it's just a painful truth people have to accept, even people with disposable income. What you get back from what you spend on a vehicle is a small percentage....

If i have this right, you want to get the warranty to make your car a more valuable trade in? I wouldnt, especially if you are trading it into a dealership. The money you spend on it wont increase its value by nearly that much, imo.

If you buy one of those warranties. you better be sure there is someplace that will work on the car for what the warranty pays.

Do some research. Last time I checked it wasn’t worth it, but just cause it didn’t work for me doesn’t it mean it wouldn’t be a good fit for you. I think it was a pain in the ass getting them to cover anything. Make sure they have good reviews that they actually pay there claims without too much BS. Honestly, I know where you live- what state not actually where you live-there’s an abundance of cash cars and parts for sale. Why every guy has a side hustle selling used cars I don’t know?

I have had my car for 210,000 miles without any major problems. I got a nice old guy. Find a mom and pop shop that treats people right.

Never had one. From what I’ve heard from those who have, they’re mostly bullshit, and tend to be much more apt to considering certain items to be consumables and non-warrantable. Consumables of course includes wear items - tires, brake pads, et. al. and a lot of people don’t realize that also includes bearings, which some of these ‘extended auto warranty’ programs extend that to include crank and camshaft bearings in the engine. Well, if they won’t help for a big job like that, I really don’t see the point.

If extended warranties weren't profitable for the providers, then they wouldn't be offered, meaning that they are not generally good deals for consumers. This is particularly true with old cars that have limited remaining value.

All cars depreciate to zero eventually. IMHO the name of the game is not to try to preserve value, but to spend as little as possible keeping it on the road. I buy nice SUVs brand new and then run them into the ground. Throughout the life of the car, I pay for as little insurance as humanly possible, saving many thousands over the life of the car. I keep to a regular maintenance schedule, but don't pay for any frills.

Once the car gets to over 200,000 miles, it's in maintenance only mode (oil changes, breaks, batteries, wipers, etc.) and gets no repair which costs over $1,000. Also, If I start getting hit with multiple repair bills over a few months on a high mileage car, bye bye. I'd rather make low interest rate payments on a new car than throw good money into an old one with one foot in the grave.

I get 10-12 good years out of a car like this, over half of them with no car payments and lower liability-only insurance premiums. And I agree that AAA is the best deal running, especially for any car with more than 100k miles on it. I call them at least once a year for one thing or another and they are now offering members-only auto insurance.

    Good luck!

Yes, for the most part I agree..^ I do see a pattern, (looking online) @ cars that mostly have the mileage run way up, accidents, multi owners.
However, the car I just got has 40k mi.
I just don't want to have to pay repairs down the road.
I have AAA, roadside assistance/premier towing, they don't have warranties. They have insurance.
They gave me some great advice tho

My last one had 100k miles, & it was rust City!
I also keep up the maintenance.

They do a 1 time inspection, then the warranty

I think you’re looking at a bunch of ripoff schemes. I’ve never seen good feedback on those.

I agree with the others that an extended warranty probably isn't worth it.

What type of car are you planning to get? If you're buying a used car, I recommend a Toyota or Honda. Do you put on a lot of miles? If you're going back to 2010 or earlier, a Pontiac Vibe might be a good option. It's a Toyota Matrix with a Pontiac insignia, so it might be less than a comparable Toyota.

If you can get a warranty from ford, that dealers will honor that will probably be a good thing.

Thanks, Pokey pokes..I believe he said any certified shop can work on it - I have a place that's walking distance, they worked on my old car.
There's also a nearby Ford dealer..

The place I got from, sells Buick, GMC, they have 7 dealerships including a Ford one, that's far away.

So far, just talking to Ford motor co, they've been cool, they guy calls me right back, & he made sure the inspector's coming out.

From my experience and brother's advice(which I ignored the first time), it's a total waste of money. You're basically giving them free money on a contract that has double-speak where the dealership is going to say "it's part of the warranty" when the time comes.

Only get the warranty on Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Because those cars are designed to break down and worthless once the warranty or the 5-year period is over.

I came across this video on the most reliable engines. Of course it's subjective. There were quite a few Toyotas mentioned in it.
