Default Anybody worked in an adult novelty store?

I have another job but a mutual friend owns a store & she knows I've been through a lot since I left my X. She also is able to provide health insurance which I don't get through my current employer. She knows I lived a pretty conservative house wife type life before for years and this could open me up some since I'm considering dancing as well as just being more open minded with this type of line of work.

Anybody worked at a store like this before? I'm a pretty quick learner but also see a benefit of possibly meeting other dancers that come in to buy outfits etc. As well as branching out and seeing stuff I might like. I had one toy during my marriage and my X through it out!!

I'd go for it but beware you will have to occasionally throw out pervs. This job comes up on reddit a bit b/c most stores pay commission to clerks (not bad compared to other retail jobs.)

Is it legal? I do not know if this is enforced:
Sec. 43.23. OBSCENITY. (a) A person commits an offense if, knowing its content and character, he wholesale promotes or possesses with intent to wholesale promote any obscene material or obscene device.

    (b) Except as provided by Subsection (h), an offense under Subsection (a) is a state jail felony.

    (c) A person commits an offense if, knowing its content and character, he:

    (1) promotes or possesses with intent to promote any obscene material or obscene device; or

Yea she told me you get young guys come in there or a group of young adults causing trouble joking around. I'll be learning stuff but help her with inventory. My current job I have to keep inventory on a lot of things.

That the store sells??? It's been around for awhile. It's not some hole in the wall company. They even have advertising on local radio.

Yes, it can be a shock at first, if you're not used to being around a bunch of dildos, vibrators, butt plugs, penis shaped candy, lingerie, etc. After a while you get used to it and so when people come in asking for suggestions, you don't even bat an eye. There are creeps in any profession. In my experience there are a lot of couples(straight, gay, and lesbian) who come in together to adult stores and men who want to buy sex toys or lingerie for their wife or girlfriend or men looking to experiment with cross dressing and asking for help on figuring out their size in women's size. Sometimes you'll get immature people who come there just for laughs and ask ridiculous questions about products, while laughing about it. As long as you can keep an open mind, you'll be fine.

The one negative I see is, if in the future you want to apply for a vanilla job, it might not look good on your resume.

its a sales job, that will pay her bills and get her and her child benefits. Win Win

Not to mention adult novelty shops are more mainstream than clubs are, in fort lauderdale a Hustler store opened up and you would be surprised that it is on a main road a 100 feet from residential neighborhoods

It's true that there's nothing illegal or unethical about working in a store like that, but some prudish people might take offense. I remember reading about people protesting the opening of an adult novelty store.

I’ve worked in an adult bookstore years ago. It was small and we sold toys, movies, magazines and we also had video booths. Not sure if it’s still open.

My experience was very good. I liked my boss, I got to work alone, and we had a bunny! (Weird right?) I was kind of scared at first, we would get a lot of druggies and weirdos and I was the only person there always. But during my short stint there no one ever tried me. I would get the occasional proposition and I did have to mop the booths lol but it really wasn’t that bad to me. It actually made my boss love me. At one point he even let me crash there!

All in all it wasn’t that bad of an experience and I’d say go for it! There are toy stores everywhere so it would definitely come in handy if you find yourself needing to do sometime similar in the future

I work in one. They provide medical, dental, and vision insurance. I only get paid 9 bucks an hour. But I still escort on the side. We get commission on sales that are a certain amount and up. My co-workers are awesome, but there is corporate, and they are strict! There are creeps there, but so far no one has crossed any lines. There is the occasional idiot who comes in and will ask for assistance and have me open up and hold and look at a bunch of different dongs or pocket pussies, and of course you have your idiots that like to call on the phone and ask me how to describe how to use a rabbit vibe or something. And then you have the dirty old men that come in and browse the porn section for hours, but they don't bother me. And then we have the regulars. Hilarious, some of them. I love the guys that come in and buy a funny shaped ridiculous looking dong while letting me know that "it's not for them". I like working there a lot. Easy going because everyone is just coming in for a good time. Not too many assholes.

A lot of people are doing sex toy sales independently...I actually went to a "Tupperware Party" that featured dildoes and lotions & had a "omg" look on my face for the whole 2 hours.

Honestly a lot of people appreciate a discreet way to buy those items. (Especially people with "dead bedroom" marriages going on!)

    Update:
I actually forgot to post a couple weeks ago. Been working at this store a couple weeks now. LEARNING A LOT!! Keep in mind this is coming from somebody who had a horrible marriage/sex life. Never was allowed toys etc. It's def different type of job but most people that come in are really down to earth and fun to talk to. My boss is actually encouraging me to buy stuff at a discount and even giving me stuff for free so I can be more honest about what I enjoy. Let's just say I have more that I can do with right now. Talk about hiding them from my daughter too!!! lol

You reminded me of something very important- upsell. Suggest items you like and have thoughtful reviews of how effective they are.

& A lot of customers never think about where to store their items- you can talk the boss into ordering "hope chests" for that, or just have a suggestion.

Honestly a LOT of marriages would be fixed if couples would just have realistic/open/thoughtful conversations about their sex lives and personal needs.

Yea I think toys can bring a whole a lot of different ideas to an otherwise hurting marriage. One married couple that came in said that there marriage got better when she started buying corsets and other lingerie from here and the toys were a plus too.

I remember I got a dildo from a friend one time as a joke and my X threw it away so that would've never helped my marriage :/ but it's for the best now anyway.

And I have been helpful with a lot so far. Still learning but I was able to upsell a realistic dildo versus your traditional style one. I stay away from the anal toy section though haha. That is on the bucket list to learn more of but def not ready for that.

I recommend an anal training kit! I've been into anal for years but I've heard good things about it. I know they have it online stores? IDK
