Correction, Bond is retiring as 007. Craig is still playing Bond. Ms. Lynch has been cast as the character assigned the 007 moniker.

Ian Fleming would never, ever have gone for this.

Admittedly, he was sexist. But he had extensive experience spying on Nazis in WW2, and knew his game. An excellent writer, though his work is set in the 1950s and very much reflects the prevailing attitude. Connery and Craig were the only two who could really portray 007 in a more modern setting without losing too much of the genuine literary character. Though the last Connery film was a warning of the ridiculous science fiction/fantasy episodes with the regrettable Roger Moore.

It might make a good movie, but it's got nothing whatsoever to do with Ian Fleming, or James Bond. I'm not going to watch it, since I've read every one of the books.

Here we see Shaka Zulu and her husband, shortly before she defeats Adolf Hitler and Napoleon at the battle of Gettysburg.

So, am I to understand that you believe its unrealistic that a black woman could potentially work for British intelligence and work her way up to 007 status?

Perhaps when Fleming wrote the novels it was impossible, but the films are not set in that time period. They're modern films in a modern age. To imply that this casting is unrealistic for today's intelligence community is absurd.

I think this will be like a spin-off film and maybe a transition into the next male 007/Bond. It could actually be a great movie, but I think it's meant to be a buffer between the next great Bond-Like character. And most likely it will be a male.

There were female spies who made major contributions to the Allied victory in World War 2. Virginia Hall, who worked for the British and the Americans, was dubbed by the Gestapo as the most dangerous spy of all Allied spies.

    https://www.history.com/news/female-...r-2-wooden-leg
In 1944, months before the D-Day invasion at Normandy, Hall rode a British torpedo ship to France, and disguised as a 60-year-old peasant woman, criss-crossed the French countryside organizing sabotage missions against the German army. In one OSS report, Hall’s team was credited with derailing freight trains, blowing up four bridges, killing 150 Nazis and capturing 500 more.

I feel like it’s still going to somehow lead to Idris being the new Bond. She was ok in Captain Marvel I am curious about how they’ll alter things for “007” she’s not Bond so will this movie still have Bond girls ? Will she be a sidekick to Daniel basically the whole movie.

What's absurd is to imply that the film has anything to do with the novels written by Ian Fleming, about James Bond.

But it really doesn't matter. If you like the film and and it takes off from there, great.

What, my immense respect for Shaka Zulu, a brilliant tactical innovator? Even if he didn't perfect the assegi as a weapon, he made most brilliant use of it. I'm inclined to believe he did.

I thought the joke would be apparent, what with the lame ass people in the picture.

Check this shit out, I was right, he perfected it.

'Shaka of the Zulu invented a shorter-style spear with a two-foot shaft and which had a larger, broader blade one foot long. This weapon is otherwise known as the iklwa or ixwa, after the sound that was heard as it was withdrawn from the victim's wound.[3][4] It was used as a stabbing weapon. Use of the traditional spear was not abandoned but was used to soften range attack enemy formations before closing in for close quarters battle with the iklwa. This tactical combination originated during Shaka's military reforms.'

Edited to add italics. This guy was maybe the greatest badass in history.

This thread seems dangerously close to getting political...frankly I think I’d rather not be disappointed by what some of y’all think about this casting decision.

Edit: Also those old Bond movies might be historically accurate but they are mysogynist AF. It’s high time for something new.

That's because Fleming WAS misogynist as hell. It was central to his world view. I am NOT defending misogyny, but that's just the way things were. He would never, ever have written anything like the story in this movie, nor given a woman the number--so it's utterly impossible for it to be an 'authentic' 007 movie.

Much like Hemingway, you can still read the books and appreciate his considerable writing skill, and acknowledge the fact that he had an interesting and active background in the espionage of World War 2.

Sure, maybe it's time for a great movie about female intelligence officers, but this one isn't set in the world of James Bond.

Didn't Halle Berry play an intelligence officer in a James Bond movie? I didn't catch that one.

Jinx, '...a Bond girl herself in the 2002 film “Die Another Day” alongside Pierce Brosnan...'

Having her as one of Bond's conquests/helpers is nowhere near the same as giving her the number 007.
