I use Rent.com & also google maps if I'm only interested in a specific neighborhood etc
I also read reviews on Google, Rent.com & Apartments.com before touring a place
Good luck on your apartment search!

Just look on Craigslist for legit looking ads. I only rent from corporate apartments because I feel like I’m less likely to get scammed. Once you get to know the area better maybe find a roommate or a small landlord. Apartments are always a gamble with who you get as neighbors and management. Obviously the cheaper they are and if they accept our line of work, they tend to not be the best. After the lease is up you can upgrade to find a better fit. It’s just about finding safe, adequate housing right now.

I've had mixed results with Craigslist. Some good, some bad. Apartments.com has worked consistently well for me. If you have any connections in the area you're moving to, don't be afraid to hit them up for either recommendations or info on where to avoid.

Me too. I tend to look for the specials through CL and then go to the apartment complex to get the info.

I have had good luck with finding apartments under construction or new management, so they are a little bit more willing to rent to me and under market price. After the apartments are nice and new rent tends to go up a bit. I get all the benefits of upscale living at a reduced cost.

I’ve never had a problem with higher end apartments accepting the fact that I’m a dancer.... lol

When I applied for my own apartment, they didn't have a problem with the fact that I was a dancer. Most places just want to make sure you'll pay the rent on time.

However, if you search for a place where you're going to have a roommate who you don't know, such as a room for rent in someone's house on Craigslist, I wouldn't disclose that you're a dancer. Many civilian women have the untrue stereotype of dancers being alkies/druggies and/or sluts, and men will think you're an easy lay and act like a pervert to you.

It’s illegal for landlords to discriminate against an applicant based on what they do for work. Don’t be afraid to flex that knowledge. Private owners offering a room in their house is more of a gray area though.

    This, and-

in most metropolitan cities listing waitress (or other similar jobs) is totally acceptable as long as the other qualification requirements are met.

ALWAYS check up online on a place before you rent there. There are apparently Internet forums and message boards where slumlords/landlords devise ways to get rid of tenants that are unwanted, for whatever reason.

Also- if you sublet, pay weekly/monthly and move if you feel any "weirdness" going on. Some older landlords offering sublets are often trying to farm out labor to tenants without paying them......And can "turn on you" if they aren't getting exactly what they plotted to scam out of you. I went through this with a family that subletted to my ex and we all actually went to small claims court over the case because these farmers were SO used to bullying people they didn't expect us to fight back.

As far as cl., only answer ads that have a phone #, the rest are BS.
    Good luck

I had issues with this when my credit was bad. I'd you have good credit and money in the bank, just about anyone will rent to you. It shouldn't matter if you're a dancer or not. When I had bad credit and a broken lease I usually had to go other routes though. I used to get on Craigslist or look for renters who would work with people in my situation.

Just drive around and look for great neighborhoods that you might want to live in.
Talk to tenants that live there, when you see them out walking their dog, getting into their car, getting their mail, etc.
That's how I've found the best apartments that I've lived in.
Also, drive around that same neighborhood at night, and on the weekends to get a sense of the noise level, etc.
