Hey ladies!
This is my first post so let me start by introducing myself! My name is Alexandra, former (maybe will be again) stripper.
I filed a suit against my home club for FLSA violations and I want to be very clear when I say that almost all of you probably have potential valid claims. Some may be worth a bunch of money and some may be for smaller amounts. The reason I filed was not solely for the purpose of retaining my back pay, what was and is most important is that I love all of my fellow lady dancers and I believe we all deserve to be treated better. Y'all are so strong, and just plain amazing women. I want the clubs to be held accountable for the criminal activity that they have actively participated in and I want the industry to change.
Personal opinion: I wish we were independent contractors. Fact: Most dancers are not treated like IC's - they are only classified this way for club owners to get away from paying taxes, paying the employees, and offering health care, among other things.
Imagining a strip club that follows all laws, including labor laws is such a foreign idea that it sounds literally impossible. And many clubs are quick to manipulate the dancers and make them feel like the clubs are not going to make it for much longer if girls continue to file lawsuits (doubt it) - HERE'S AN IDEA - maybe if they followed the law and stopped treating dancers like they are worth less than they actually are then dancers would stop filing lawsuits.
If you're worried about the profit of the club making the club close down, don't. Strip clubs, especially corporate clubs, have been making outrageously high profits for 20+ years. They have been paying virtually no overhead costs of running a business because they are making you ladies pay for everything. I think it's time to say enough is enough. They can and will survive on the lesser profits that the club should be making. The fact is, without all of us, they would own nothing more than a bar or a night club and they need to start taking us more seriously.
I ask that you ladies please please please start taking pictures and holding on to documents that you have received or signed from your clubs, as well as any documents hanging up around the place including "dancer rules" or "make up policies" or anything really that dictates absolutely any part of the way you work.
Rant over - thank you for listening - I'm curious to see if anyone else has filed or has thought about filing lawsuits and was it for the same reasons as me? No way I could be all alone in my thought process right? Ahh
P.S. I wish more strip club owners were women - bet we would do it so much better <3
