Default Mentioning sex work in school applications

    Hey all,

I'm thinking of applying to a Masters program in Social Work. I'd love to work with sex workers in the future, and I have been thinking of mentioning how I've been one for the past year and a half in my letter of intent to the school. Do you all think it's a good idea? I've been doing several different things, but I was thinking of mainly mentioning stripping (as it is on the legal side and wouldn't put me or the school in a complicated situation).
Stripping definitely has helped me forge myself emotionnally and I think it guided me to want to do social work/mental health work etc, adding to the fact that sex workers are the population I'd like to be working with in the future.

What do you all think? Should I lie about the "gap in the resume" and not take any risks or should I be honest and try and pull it as an advantage? Has any one here done it?
The schools I'd like to apply to are in NYC, ideally Hunter College.

    Thanks so much babes!

I doubt the academic world is open minded enough to accept that unfortunately. Maybe someone in New York area in that field can reply. It's stupid but seems conservative fields like that are still in the dark ages.

Yeah agreed that most fields are unfortunately still too conservative. I think psychology is one of the few where I might risk being honest. Social work is big on clearance to work with kids, mentally ill, etc. and there are some people who might get alarmed that you were a sex worker (even if it's legal).

If you have a gap between your undergrad & now, then you need to fill the gap with SOMETHING. Do you have volunteer work or anything? A side business?
I had huuuuuge gaps in vanilla work experience on my applications. Whenever I wasn't in school, I filled them in via stretching dates of vanilla jobs I had worked, volunteer positions, and a small online side hustle (that I framed as a small business). Just some ideas for you, I'm not sure how in depth masters applications are.

Uh...NO, def not. Don't let these girls on Instagram delude you into think stripping and sex work is normal and accepted. It's not and you would do better keeping it a secret.

I wouldn't do it. The stigma against sex workers is very real and it will reflect poorly on you. Why risk it? It's more likely to do harm than good.

Thanks everyone, I'll skip on being honest then. It sucks, there are so many skills we get from our jobs that are not recognized and that we get stigmatized for. You all were really helpful and I appreciate everyone's take on this!

Ladies that disclose like that are already making oodles of money, have money stacked up, and don’t rely on “the man” for jobs/positions into school etc

You applying for a position into a grad program therefore you are not in a position to disclose without ramifications that affect your prospects career wise.

If you are applying to multiple grad schools, I'd say that it wouldn't hurt to include this in a few of your applications, but not in all. It would be interesting to see how it's received.

A lot of people work in the sex industry on the side. Women working in academia are no exception, so maybe you'd be pleasantly surprised if you find out it's more accepted than you would originally expect.

One woman on social media is an out former NV brothel worker who completed her Phd in sociology at the University of Nevada and now works in a social service program. There are several writers who are very out as former strippers.

Stripping is not illegal. Stripping is not prostitution. Lots of people forget that, but it is always good to remind them. I think that if it's impacted you significantly to influence you to pursue grad school for the purpose of serving that sector of the population, then yes, it is reasonable to mention it and credit it for influencing you. Of course, once you are in the field and licensed as a social worker, it may not align with professional code of conduct to continue working as a sex worker.

Ya know, I really wanted to try that. There are some schools that I think might have been more open to it & I would also have liked to try it with schools I didn't care about attending anyway. So much of the game is just trying to set yourself apart from the 5000 other apps the school got. Would have been fun to see if anybody was like "Yes, a stripper, that sounds interesting, we want to interview you!"

Unfortunately, it's one application that you then select which schools to send it to... You can't send different apps to different schools. Boo.

    Details.

It probably depends on the school applied to and the method of attending

They might not care as much about someone attending online only thus not impacting the conservative culture. Liberal colleges or colleges where they accept anyone who will pay are more open minded.

Also some colleges are very conservative and “prestigious” and most likely would not accept this

but hey op will just have to do her own testing and see what happens

Absolutely not. Sex work isn't as widely accepted as people make it seem. Besides, many people say they accept it, while they truly don't. Plenty still look down on strippers

There's a time and place for everything and school is definitely not the place for it.

Anything you say or do can and will be used against you. I know, I know you’re thinking, “Well if sex work is so horrible then how could I have made it this far? NOPE! They will not see the narrative of an empowered woman that is using sex work as a way to better herself. It will be used to discredit your achievements and reduce you to being
labeled a whore. Buy a shirt from Jacklyn the stripper is you want to support sex workers, but there’s no need to sacrifice your future. Unless you have a shit ton of money or just want to go for broke then by all means. This of course is only my cynical opinion. But seriously, I just don’t want you to have through all the suffering like I’ve seen over and over again.
