Ok, so the flip of the other thread, "Would you live in a house where a violent act occurred"?
True story, you can view ABC 20/20, Dr Phil etc.
In 2011, Jerry and Janice Rice bought a one story house in a San Diego neighborhood. Everything was normal at first, but the couple received a note asking them to sell their house to a desperate buyer. The letter made an offer to pay $100k above the price. The couple ignored the letter, but soon started to get odd subscriptions in the mail from various home and garden catalogs and magazines. Also, over 1k in adult diapers were ordered in their name.
The couple revived over a thousand dollars worth of bills for adult diapers. Things got even more bizarre when they saw their house relisted on a real estate site and that a New Years Eve party that they didn’t plan was scheduled at their house from an email invitation.
Jerry had gotten into trouble with the men in his neighborhood after their wives received Valentine’s Day cards signed “Love Jerry Rice”.
At their wits end, the couple installed a spiked fence, a lockable gate and security cameras. Jerry also locked the mailbox, and would spend hours monitoring the cameras, becoming distant from his family.
The family called the cops who told them to contact them if things got worse. It was almost a year, when the trolling turned into fear for their lives.
One day Janice saw a picture of herself on a Craigslist add asking for sex and that whoever answered should come to the house between the times of 6 am to 3 pm. The add put emphasis on “Janice” liking the “element of surprise”. Also, the ad stated that she wanted the men to 'force their way in', & not listen when she said No'!
Btw she had to small children.
Two men responded to the add and the police were contacted. The couple looked at the letter they received when they first moved in, and found it was written by a woman named Kathy Rowe. After searching the house party and Craigslist adds were linked to her email. When questioned Rowe claimed that the couple outbid her and took her dream house. Rowe was charged with stalking and is required to avoid all contact with Jerry and Janice as well as staying away from their property for 10 years.
She had to wear an ankle monitor for a year, had some years probation too..
She apologized, & offered to pay for the damages, which the couple agreed to.
She now lives 1 block away, & says she goes out of her way to avoid bumping into them in stores etc.
I knew of a lady years ago that wanted a certain house, she just counter bid, she did get it, & it ended up selling for more than the list price, which I don't understand why she didn't just do that, unless different RE laws.
