It surprises me that Alaska is the #1 most dangerous. The rest I can all easily see. Massachusetts being the #1 safest surprises met too, since there are some really rough parts of MA.

I have always felt safe in NY.. brooklyn, bronx, queens, nyc, the subway and I never had a issue. im always lost. ppl went out of their way to help me.
NYers know when your not from there and go out of their way to let me know its not safe to be alone.

    strongly agree with south carolina

It's based on this chart. FWIW, I live in one of the most dangerous and had way more issues in TX than when I moved back here.

    Anecdotal but-

    * the top most dangerous list picks seem to have poverty culture in common.

    * some crimes that are sexually motivated in nature often don't appear that way until the victim is actually assaulted. I lived near a registered sex offender and he got away with breaking into a neighbor's house. She came home, saw the door ajar and called police. I only found out about it because I had a weird conversation with this guy right around the time he did that break in and the sheriff who responded realized who I was talking about. So consider the thwarted attempts.

    * I don't want this to turn into a gun debate but the likelihood of a potential victim using a firearm to stop an assault does reduce the likelihood of that person being targeted.

I felt super safe in South Carolina in comparison to New York but I was in Charleston.

What the hell is going on in Alaska ? I do know that Alaska has more men than women that live there, so maybe that 's one of the reasons.

I think you are right about the poverty angle but the gun observation is a miss. New York has the toughest gun laws in the country and is one reason why NYS has the lowest suicide rate in the country. One thing about a gun is that its a pretty final way to commit suicide. I'm not debating gun rights, I do own a gun but stating facts.

Oh I understand. Unfortunately due to the era we live in almost any conversation can turn into a gun debate.

Also guns aren't a magic fix for the risks associated with trying to use one for self defense- having the gun taken away by a would-be assailant would probably make an assault worse.

Alaska makes sense because it’s the wilderness, and that is probably going to attract some crazies! IMHO, lol. Overall I’d say this list is pretty accurate. The most dangerous cities are very high in crime.

Alaska has the most rapes by far, based on population. No other state even comes close. NJ has the fewest.

I can vouch for the south being pretty unsafe for women esp if traveling there alone. My last trip thru MS, LA, AL was pretty scary. Also in mid Texas area, Odessa, Abilne, (wherever those oil rig workers are) pretty scary.

I’d probably say all 50 states.

America is not what it used to be. Not only are predators everywhere but treatment of/respect for women is diminishing.

Don’t a good portion of states have a backlog of rape kits?

I don’t even feel safe to walk alone at night .... anywhere
