So it occurred to me that lots of things going out of stock means people going into panic mode. However, instead of panic, it may be more beneficial to look for simple switches/adjustments/substitutions....
Got some ideas?
List them below.....

Got some ideas?
List them below.....
1. switch to meatless options if you can't find meat in the stores (beyond brand is pretty tasty imo)
2. switch to bidet if you can't find toilet paper/baby wipes (idea courtesy of a sw member here)
3. switch to plant bast eggs if you can't find actual eggs (JUST brand is an idea although I haven't tasted it yet; a bit pricey at $6/bottle though)

I've talked about it in other threads but just think of in terms of eating very cheaply lately.
This IS just temporary after all. Hopefully income will return for many of us who have been struck without our usual streams in 3-6 weeks?
It's time to embrace that inner hippie and make a game out of how cheap you can live.

Today I'll most likely make a big pan of fried potatoes .
I'll use like 1/3 of it for my brunch and make a fried egg / toast . That is like a $1.50 meal.
Then I can same the rest for another repeat brunch tomorrow + the rest with whatever I have for dinner.
Think in terms of batches.
Go easy on yourself if you cave haha ( I had take out yesterday ).

hamburger soup is cheap and easy
1 pound of it , cook up
Then add a builion cube and water or beef broth , potato chunks , carrots
Med - High a little more
Add celery , cook a little more
Add frozen corn , frozen peas, chick peas ... .whatever other veggies you have on hand.
^ This will make enough for 6-7 people or a really big serving to eat multiple times.
This time is about adapting. In my normal life where I'm working over 40 hours a week I rarely cook at all for example. I'm all about " buying back " my time.
Right now though .... it's all about stretching the small amount of $ that i have. It's time to adapt.
Good point! I have quite a few potatoes and some frozen vegetables to last a couple weeks
I think people starting to catch on to the meatless options. I was unable to procure Beyond patties - I may try another store - at least I got some Beyond ground crumbles (so I may order some more)
I also couldn’t get any bread. So I may order some gluten free options if I can’t get it at another store.
I have been on a soup kick lately. I have a bunch of beans and lentils in my cupboard. I make big pots of bean soup, lentil soup, chili, etc. With veggie stock and canned or frozen veggies, you can make vegetable soup. Using eggs, chicken bouillon cubes, and water you can make egg drop soup. If you have meat you can make beef stew or beef and veggie soup. Whatever we don't eat gets frozen and put in the freezer. I keep bread in the fridge because it seems to keep it fresh longer. You can make your own bread too and whatever you don't eat, stick it in the freezer. People freak out about hand sanitizer shortages. You can make your own hand sanitizer out of aloe gel and rubbing alcohol. If you don't have a bidet, a water bottle can be substituted in extreme cases.
Oh! Thanks for the tip on the water bottle
I’ll see about making bread but for some reason I recall seeing yeast shortages in stores

^ I need something to do this evening. Bread making is a decent idea.
I should have given away my unwanted items sooner. I don’t have time to sell the items online so instead I’m going to digitize all my important documents and then recycle the paper to clear the place up a bit
switch to silicone baking mats if you can’t find foil

I already live like an inner hippie. Lol. I live very cheap. I live with someone and even when I lived alone at another place my rent was still cheap too. Under 1k(with free wifi and satellite tv). I've gotten lucky with dirt cheap rent.
I unplug everything minus the fridge. I'm not the cook here(Thank God lol), but we eat healthy vegan organic meals that are prepped for a week worth. Not expensive either. Plus there's cooking herbs in my garden. I occasionally get squashes from the garden and have a grape tree. Growing your own herbs and veggies is beneficial, plus relaxing hobby.
I'm cutting down on Whole Foods. I'm only going to go there if there's an item I like that I can't find elsewhere. You can get cheap organic foods at other supermarkets.

This is interesting.
My mom just called me the other day freaking out about what she thought would be a food shortage....I was like 'bruh! now would be the time to build a little mini greenhouse n grow some food!"
I'm going to start turning off the electric outlets at night

^ Fresh produce might be reduced a *little* but I don't think there is a real risk of food shortage.
It's a great time to grow a garden though. Something to do is as valuable as the food you'd get from it.
Also Nike Training app is good for working out at home since the gyms are closed. My gym has online workout videos but Im thinking of cancelling the membership anyways

Yeah, I never leave anything plugged that's not in use. Saves you on the electric bill. I have this battery operated night light that lights up when you walk in front of it. Perfect for those walks to the bathroom at night. No need to turn the lights on. I need it, bc I'm blind as a bat at night. Lol

Not really a tip but I found this video calming and inspiring. Makes me feel like I can see a glimmer of hope of the eventual recovery.
When the Motor City stops - in the name of love.
Damn grocery store didn’t have the almond milk I wanted so I had chocolate almond milk with my cereal - and you know what, it tasted good lol
What are you all doing to wash your car?
i dont wash mine.. i live in the cascades along the ocean and a huge glaciated mountain....its going to get rained on..all the time until late juneish. but tofu has been really really difficult to get, unless you want silken, as most the tofu thats firm and such comes out of parts of japan that were getting hit hard for a while so alot of food ended up using seitan instead. which works out fine...just dont use it if you have any form of gluten allergy.
