    Default Unemployment and Taxes?

Hey so admitting I didnt file my 2018 taxes, nor 2019 (although i was honestly planning to lol)

I'm reading that self employed IC's can file for unemployment during Covid-19 shutdown.

I'm wondering how that process works?

Do i need to file for 2018/2019 to receieve unemployment benefits?

Can I just file for free online? What website is recommended?

2018 I was working solely in Nevada, I actually went to a tax person and he told me no need to file
2019 I was working both in Nevada, and overseas, and now i'm moving back to California, but i can still file unemployment from Nevada right?!

    Ahh so confusing.

    THank you.

Nevada has no state income tax, so you are fine with them for not filing. Unfortunately, the U.S. as a country does tax income and you do have to file unless you don't make enough. However, if you have dependent(s) you should file even if you don't make much as the Earned Income Tax Credit will be beneficial to you. If you haven't filed taxes recently, the stimulus check will come to you in paper check format.

You need to file your taxes, especially if you owe anything to the government. Not filing is a crime. Further, as long as you don't file, the statute of limitations does not start to run. So, go find a reputable CPA or enrolled agent and file your taxes. The service will take payments.

Hmm so they are still sending out stimulus checks w/o filing? How do i find out where they are sending it to?? O__O The last time I filed is when I was working as a barista (2016), would they just send it to that address?

Yes for a while I thought Ill just go under the radar this year, and file next year...Plus thought we had a certain number of years to file before it's a penalty... And what's the statute of limitations 0__o

Idk why the tax person thought it was a good idea not to file. I had only showed him my VIP reciepts (we weren't counting tips)and he's like ehhh no need. Idk. Can I just file online w like turbo tax or irs form or something? And i'm still curious if filing for taxes is the only way to receieve unemployment?

So i guess my main question is....CAn i start filing for unemployment now and pay my taxes later ?? or do i HAVE to do taxes first. Anyway isnt the tax deadline pushed back to 7/15/20? and honestly who wants to pay taxes when they dont have a job yet?! I'd rather wait to get unemployment $ or til I start working again

Nevada: "Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation: An additional $600 added to each week of unemployment insurance or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.

Status: awaiting federal guidance. Last updated 03/31/20 " - https://detr.nv.gov/Page/COVID-19_(C...and_Employers/

I'm wondering if i should just wait til the status is updated

This is a good question, the government doesn't seem to know the answer.

Yes for a while I thought Ill just go under the radar this year, and file next year...Plus thought we had a certain number of years to file before it's a penalty... And what's the statute of limitations 0__o
A statute of limitations says that the government can only sue you or bring criminal charges during a certain amount of time. However, if you do not file, the statute does not start to run, so they can file charges anytime.

Idk why the tax person thought it was a good idea not to file. I had only showed him my VIP reciepts (we weren't counting tips)and he's like ehhh no need. Idk.
Bad advice. Get a new tax professional. The stimulus check is just one reason to always file your tax returns, even if you cannot afford to pay.

Can I just file online w like turbo tax or irs form or something?
Yes, you can use Turbo Tax and there are other federal efile providers.

And i'm still curious if filing for taxes is the only way to receieve unemployment?
No, unemployment is completely separate from filing taxes. Normally, you have to have a W-2 job to be eligible for unemployment, but for COVID19, they are applying unemployment benefits to just about everyone.

It's not super hard to do it yourself. Tedious, yes, hard, not really. The IRS site has free PDFs of all the forms + instructions. They offer free file services or you can print 'em off and mail them.
Off the top of my head, you need a Form 1040, a Schedule C and a Schedule SE. If you were in school, there's another form for education credits.

I'm not sure about ICs, but I like freetaxusa.com.

CreditKarma and Taxact.com also offer free efiling. CreditKarma is not super easy to use, but, it does work for free.

I have used TaxHawk for years. Unemployment will ask for income verification, so you will likely need your 2019 taxes done ASAP. You won't have to have any tax owed PAID before you file for UIA.

Years ago, I went 3 years without paying taxes and was freaking out over the whole situation... I went to the TaxDomme and she was a lifesaver. I sent her everything I had, was totally disorganized and she was able to get it all sorted out for me and Ive been filing every year ever since. She specifically works with sex workers and is amazing, I suggest getting in touch with her. Just google TaxDomme and you'll find her.

I have no documented income because I work gigs for cash. Can I qualify for benefits?

It's going to be difficult, says Andrew Stettner, because you have to provide documentation of your earnings.

"You have to have some evidence," Stettner says. "Maybe you got pay envelopes, even handwritten ones with the amount that you got paid. Maybe you got paid in checks that people wrote 'cash' on, but you took a picture of those checks, or you've got the canceled checks."

Successfully proving that you received income could take months, especially while unemployment offices are so overloaded, he says. But it's worth trying because the potential benefits are significant.

A couple of my friends who are still in the business have told me they are getting their UI benefits. Here's what NC is requiring:

Examples of documents to show past employment and income:

    2019 Tax Returns
    Recent Paycheck Stubs
    Bank Receipts
    1099s
    Billing statements, notices
    Business licenses
    Contracts, invoices, ledgers

Examples of documents to show COVID-19 as the reason for loss of work:

Documentation from medical professionals related to diagnosis or isolation instructions
Notices from school or childcare providers
Notices from county or state government regarding business closures or stay at home orders
Documentation that a job offer or need for your services was cancelled or delayed because of COVID-19

    2. If you’re a 1099 employee, list the name and address displayed on your 1099 when completing the last employer section on your application.

Interesting article, not sure if it would help, but while I was escorting, I kept a ledger of all the money I was paid, and I deposited it all into my bank account. That made it easy to keep track of my income / expenses for tax purposes. I wonder if that kind of balance keeping would count as documentation, since it states handwritten pay envelopes would be sufficient.

Im guessing it wouldnt be that easy to do retroactively, but worth a shot maybe to try and create a ledger, correlate that with bank deposits and use that as proof of income.
