A few years back, I visited someone I knew from the community who had gone ‘English’ and lived in Chicago. She’s a couple years older than I am, and we kept in touch after she left, and I was there for her wedding. And, in spite of the bizarre aristocratic air about the whole thing (she married into a rather wealthy family), she insisted we had to have a Chicago hot dog. Which was nice for me, because it was a bit more down-to-earth and familiar to me. On the way there, the husband-to-be said to her, “Does she know not to ask for ketchup?” (referring of course to me). And this was reiterated at the place we went to, which had a couple signs boasting the fact that they don’t do ketchup. I wasn’t thinking about this when I ordered my side with the hot dog, which was fries. So I finished the hot dog (which was quite good) and I was about to start on the fries, but of course I had no fucking ketchup. So I’m pretty much just panning across the dining area, and the husband figures out why, so he says to me, “No, you won’t find any here”. We also got to go to Chinatown the next day, which of course has its own culinary delights, but since it seems we have a hot dog thread, I figured I’d share a hot dog story.

So the moral of this story… nothing exists except for the void.

Are you telling us you eat ketchup on hotdogs?

Years ago I ordered a hamburger and it came with ketchup. I was astounded and maybe traumatized, to the point I always insist on no ketchup on my hamburger.

Does a segment of the country not eat hot dogs (or hamburgers) without ketchup? I've traveled quite a bit, but I must say that seems to be a staple..

Sometimes. In the case of the Chicago dog, it was just fine without, but I still wanted it for my fries.

Apparently it’s a Chicago (and a slowpoke) thing not to put ketchup on a hot dog. Then again, I have neighbors who moved here from NYC - pretty much a foodie Mecca - and the husband likes everything unseasoned and without condiments. The wife isn’t of the same mind, but she can’t cook for shit, so either he does the cooking or they go out to eat, or - on occasion - a bunch of us get together and throw a potluck dinner.

I never encountered ketchup on either a hot dog or hamburger until that event. After investigation I discovered McDonalds put it on hamburgers. People are usually surprised I specify no ketsup on a hamburger, and assure me they never do that.

I know someone who will eat nothing but beef, amd eats it well done and loaded with A 1 sauce. Seems cardboard would be cheaper. I have begun to enjoy a minimum of condiments on most food. Hunan or Thai is another category.

I understand. I grew up in a Mennonite family, so the food we ate was generally pretty plain. Sometimes when we went to “the big city” (by which I mean Sheboygan), my father - being a true steward of the state of Wisconsin - would take us to Culver’s. But, prior to them visiting us here in N.C. last Christmas break, they had never had tacos, so it became my personal mission and obligation to rectify that. And that ended well, although they were a bit confused looking at the menu (this was a taco truck, not Taco Bell), so I had to ask them to leave the ordering part to me.

Just kidding, and that thread is now against the (newer) rules anyway. There was a guy who tried posting a photoshop of 'his' dick in a hot dog bun there though.

I live in a German-Czech area now and the baked goods are good, but most of the food is pretty bland. When we moved here we had to learn where to eat to avoid over salted food

    My hand was forced:

    Ketchup
Although ketchup seems like an all-American ingredient perfect for squirting on burgers, hot dogs, and fries, the origins of the beloved condiment are actually Chinese. Ke-tsiap was a sauce based on fermented fish that was popular in 17th-century China (fish sauce came to them from Vietnam). British sailors got a taste for ke-tsiap in the 18th century and subsequently brought it back to England, where people began tinkering with it and trying to recreate it with more common Western ingredients.

The early recipes published in 18th-century Great Britain called for “kidney beans, mushrooms, anchovies, and walnuts,” writes Andrew F. Smith in “Pure Ketchup.” Then the condiment spread to the American Colonies, where tomatoes were added. The first known recipe for tomato ketchup was devised by the American scientist and horticulturist James Mease, and recorded in 1812; it contained brandy and spices along with tomato pulp, but no sugar or vinegar like the tomato ketchup we consume today at a rate of 70-plus pounds per year.

    Catsup
The oldest Westernized spelling of the sauce name, according to the OED, was actually catchup, with the first citation appearing in 1690. Ketchup came next, in 1711, and finally catsup appeared in 1730. Ketchup giant Heinz originally went with catsup as the spelling for their product, but changed it to the now-standard “ketchup” in the late 1880s as a way to stand out from the competition, which was using the then-current “catsup” variation.

Ive received some rather creative (and unsolicited) Photoshop works myself. Not that it would matter if they actually had good Photoshop skills, because it wasnt getting them anywhere either way. Which reminds me of one of the many reasons I hate weddings show up as a single, adult age woman - even just as a guest, but especially as a bridesmaid- and the guys in attendance assume that means DTF. Usually they leave convinced that, if I were to say yes, it would end up being some sort of blood orgy and they have a change of heart.

I have never understood the appeal of sending unsolicited dick pics.

As with many things involving customer types, it's like they are a different species of animal. No offense to the many fine non-stereotypical customer members out there.

I hate weddings for many reasons. Got my start as a Spring Break DJ, and the guy who ran the pool deck was very busy with weddings the other part of the year. He tried to get me to join him in his business, but after a few times training I said no fucking way.

Someone put the idea in their heads that it was a good idea. I’m a lot more careful about giving my phone number out, suffice to say. Though it was always tempting to find one online to send back to them with the message, “That’s nice… here’s mine”.

Wish Id done it. But, I manage to ward them off one way or another. My go-to was to start talking about necrophilia (which I still think is hilarious), but now whenever Im at any sort of social gathering, they tell me, if someones chatting you up and you want to end the conversation, give us a signal and well step in - dont do the things you normally do.

It makes me wonder, though you think the necrophiliacs have a forum? Like how we have, The Lounge, maybe they have The Mortuary or The Coroners Office? Post Pictures of Decedents, stuff like that perhaps?

My girlfriend recently added me to a snapchat group with a group of her girlfriends. When I noticed, I laughed and told her I was going to send so many dick pics to the group. She looked at me in horror, to which I just responded, "I didn't mean MY dick.." I think she's now more horrified..

I once saw a phone book listing for Dial A Gay Atheist. That would be a good number to give annoying people.

If you are being annoyed by phone spammers, you can answer the phone screaming 'JESUS CHRIST THERE'S BLOOD EVERYWHERE! Fred you better get here quick, I think I killed him!', etc.

I tried this once. Worked like a charm.

One of my coworkers, whenever he exchanged numbers with someone, he’d always say, “Now I know where to send dick pics to”. Some time later on, he’d flood them with photos of Dick Cheney, Dick Clark, Dick Tracy, etc.
