My old roommate grew up in Mississippi and I had the “privilege” of seeing his hometown. One of the things he told me was that sometimes the alligators would lay at the edge of the lake face in with their tails sticking out, so they would make a game of sneaking up behind them, grabbing their tails, and then taking off before the alligator could snap around and get a hold of them. You’d think it would’ve been enough for him to just tell me about it, but of course it wasn’t. He just HAD to show me.

You should have seen the story in the Houston chronicle The headline said he rescued the child, creating the impression the gator already had the kid.

Actually, they don't bite often.
You should move down here and get away from the cold weather.

Umm… FUCK NO.

Fuck that. Gators are everywhere in Florida too. People that live there don’t worry about them because they are use to it. They swim in they lake and don’t even think anything of it?!?! I didn’t even know Texas had gators. It doesn’t surprise because it’s hot and humid.

They hardly ever bite, and living here far outweighs the inconvenience.
Yeah, Gators aren't like Salties. If i went to Australia i would NEVER dip in the lakes in Queensland. We're on the menu.

They are good to eat.

Not for me.
Before covid19, I considered moving to FL, then I rememberd the huge python issue (a 17 ft 1 was recently caught). Plus the other snakes. & gators.
I don't care for super hot weather, tropical storms.
I may eventually go to CO, there's snakes but no gators. I don't mind snow.

Some people go swimming in lakes and canals but most of us have more sense than that. The rule is don't get in any water that you can't see the bottom of. Don't jog or walk your dog along the edges of water ways. If you go to one of our springs stay central and avoid the murky edges where they can hide because they're really lazy and prefer that we come to them. I know it's a lot to remember but for most of us it's embedded in our brains. I don't understand how anyone could let their kids play near water knowing Gators are there? That father from the article is an idiot.
There's been around 25 documented gator fatalities in the last 70 years and 400 attacks in Florida. I'm gonna do some more research to be sure because as I remember in many cases victims came from somewhere else. And it's always so tragic to hear about it when it happens.

Here's a gator map for anyone who's interested. From East Texas to Arkansas, then all the way over to Virginia and down to Florida.

There is a hunting season.

Exactly, why would you let your kids play there???

When living in a semi-rural part of FL, one learns to keep an eye out for gators and snakes.
Pools are generally safe since most people in FL have the good sense to put a fence around them. But it never hurts to take a good look in the pool before jumping in just in case. It's not just gators - water moccasins and certain other snakes like water too.

And you can buy the meat.
