    Default Remembering 9/11

At 8:46 am on 9/11/2001, Mohammed Attaand the other hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 11 crashed the plane into floors 93-99 of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing everyone on board and hundreds inside the building.

At first it was assumed that the crash was a horrible accident. Then, at 9:03 am. hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into floors 75-85 of the WTC’s South Tower, killing everyone on board and hundreds inside the building. At this moment, we knew that this was no accident.

At 9:37 am, hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 77 crashed the plane into the western facade of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., killing 59 aboard the plane and 125 military and civilian personnel inside the building.

At 9:59 am, the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.

At 10:07 am, after passengers and crew members aboard the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 learned about the attacks in New York and Washington, they mounted a heroic attempt to retake the plane. In response, hijackers deliberately crashed the plane into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all 40 passengers and crew aboard. It was suspected that this plane was headed either to the Pentagon or the White House.

At 10:28 am, the World Trade Center’s North Tower collapsed.

I was in New York City that day, when the whole city went into mourning and all too many people were faced with the tragic and senseless loss of family, friends and acquaintances who were killed for no other reason than because they worked in those buildings. There were also too many heroes to count on that day, including NYPD, FDNY and the people on Flight 93 who forced the hijackers to bring the plane down in a field rather than into another building.

    We will never forget.

I too was there. I saw the second plane hit the South Tower. I was two blocks away at Pine St. and Broadway. I saw the jumpers. I saw the North Tower collapse.

    Let's HOPE we never forget.

Wow Eric, sorry to hear that. I was in Midtown but even there we could see the smoke.

I took the subway from Brooklyn and got off at Wall St. I saw everyone looking up and asked what happened. They said a plane had hit the WTC. From Broadway at about 8:50 A.M. approx it did not look that bad. I thought a private plane had veered off course and hit the building. I met someone at her office on Wall St. for a pickup and then started walking north on Broadway . The further north I got the more I could see the North Tower had major damage. I remember wondering how long it would take to repair it. As I reached Pine St. there was a loud roar and I ( and lots of others ) watched the second plane strike the South Tower and disappear inside. I could clearly see it was a large two engine , silver commercial airliner. About a second after impact there was a huge explosion and fireball. I could feel the heat of the blast from more than two blocks away. At that point there was no doubt we were under terrorist attack. I kept walking north and tried to call home to let my loved ones know I was OK but the cell phone circuits were jammed. I managed to find a pay phone ( remember those ? ) and got through. When I hit John St we could see jumpers. I am forever grateful that I could not see the last 40 ft. or so of their descent with one exception. One guy landed close to Church Street and hit the ground ejecting a cloud of pink vapor and I was about 1 1/2 blocks away. I was inside a building blocks away when the South Tower collapsed. After my business was postponed until further notice ( for obvious reasons ) and after hearing about the Pentagon from a radio that a group of folks were listening to I walked back south and got as far as Chambers St. where the police had blocked off the area. By now it was well after 10 A.M. The North Tower was still up and a large group of police directed everyone to move uptown. So I did. I heard some people screaming behind me, turned around and watched the North Tower collapse. The subways were not running and the Brooklyn Bridge was temporarily closed so I had to walk over the Manhattan Bridge ( for the 1st and only time in my life ) to get back to my car in Brooklyn and from there I drove home , took a long shower ( I only got a light dusting ) and then was glued to my T.V. for the next 3 days or so.

I didn't have any family or close friends who were killed but I did know several firemen who were and few people I went to high school with also died.

That is my personal 9/11 recollection.

We were randomly released from school, neither of us knew why. After getting home and sitting on the couch, complete silence went through our house when the second plane hit.
I just remember my Family covering their mouths, staring at the screen without blinking in complete shock, felt surreal.
Don't think I was old enough or within the right mind set to completely understand, but I absolutely felt the energy.

I was there as well, in midtown. I saw south tower collapse from my roof. A lot of people came to my apartment to sort things out. I will never forget the woman with a fiance at Cantor who did not survive. She kept calling and calling different people to find him. I remember the stores were empty in five minutes, people were very polite, and Rosa Mexicana kept serving food. My girlfriend at the time came up from downtown covered in white dust, with a crowd of people. I met her in the middle of 9th avenue. A group of software guys I had met with a week earlier were all killed.

What a terrible day. I had several friends who went right through the middle of it like you.

I didn’t understand the gravity of what was going on. Of course it was horrific to watch. They canceled
    class.

Class was canceled, and I heard all about it in the days following. We didn’t have a television at home. I was 11 when it happened. Had a roommate who was in the Army at the time, and his unit was on DRF1. His perspective of it would probably be more relevant. He says they anticipated Iraq as soon as the election results were broadcast, as well.

I remember finding out we were going to war in Afghanistan. Never expected that I’d find myself jumping into that fray nine years later. Didn’t expect it to still be going on ten years after that.

I was standing in college at the time, we were listening to it on the radio. It was horrific. I think i was 19 or so at the time. I was expecting 100,000 dead then, there's an awful lot of people that were in these buildings, but i guess the Terrorists just hit us too early. People hadn't had a chance to get to work yet. I actually left my school and went home to watch it on TV.

I was 9 years old in the 3rd grade. I was already in class, and the teacher came running into the room to grab my other teacher. Then they rolled out the tv cart thing and while we were class, watched it live on the news & I watched as the plane crashed into the building. They even turned on the radio (i think).
