4 months is a little harsh. Just hit them with large fines.

Privileged kids think their parents will buy them out of everything when they are in another country, like they do at home.

"XXXX (the 18 yr old female) who is enrolled as a pre-med student at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, arrived in the Cayman Islands on Nov. 27 and was supposed to undergo a two-week quarantine as mandated by the government"

The arrest record details should be posted as an * on their medical degree. If they actually get one.

We should forever judge people for something stupid they do when they are 18? That's awfully judgmental.

Yeah I think a lot of 18-25 year olds are dumb af and risk takers

However you can’t go to other countries and think you can just waltz over and do whatever

If they have a law it should be abided by.

Many countries have low covid rates (unlike the US with our unchecked pandemic) because they actually have strict guidelines and the last they want is some foreigner coming over causing an outbreak because they felt they were too entitled to follow the rules of the country they went to visit.

Gotta learn there are consequences to ones actions.

she should be luck she ain’t pull this is North Korea or she’d probably have a worse fate

I see your point, but was looking at it through the lens that a future doctor is ignoring science. IDK, that and Georgia. But yeah, recollecting my 18 years, I'm amazed at the stupid, just glad there weren't cell phones to capture it!

It depends on what it is. This required a LOT of premeditation and planning, deliberate violation of law and absolutely no sense of remorse or contrition. Even worse, the grandmother exhibits the same hubris.

I'd like people who break laws meant to prevent the virus from spreading, to have to do community service working in a morgue, or digging graves for covid fatalities. They're doing that in Indonesia.

That's pretty much the way things are now with the internet. Even if government doesn't keep any type of permanent record, if you do something stupid and it's widely reported, it's going to be on the internet forever, and will come up any time someone does an internet search on your name. It might not be fair, but that's the way it is.

4 months is too much for young kids who are stupid to think they are invincible or stupid on how the world works in different areas. Hell for me 15 hours with my dui was enough to want to get out. I was in a cell with a repeat offender who jerked herself off right next me. Some people are made for that life with no cares in the world and some learn to never repeat it again. Never again will I be that stupid. I'm ashamed of it but know all I can do is put one foot in front of the other and push to move on. Proved it with my progress.

Some kids are plain stupid. Give them a break and give them hefty fines.

I was treated nice by officers when I was a dumb idiot at 16 yrs old. Totally don't get treating them like criminals and having a charge on their record now.

How does one know that the lesson has been learned vs. letting those who commit a law breaking offense go on to keep committing offenses, even worse the next times around?

Also while hitting people in their wallet is a great deterrent what if a mf claims to be broke af, claims bankruptcy, then works under the table to escape punishment when they could have simply been locked up as their punishment?

I don’t know these people but I do know some crafty mfs that will do ANYTHING to avoid being held accountable.

Small countries/Small towns/small islands have low threshold for certain types of illicit activity.

You go to a small country with a contagious disease and you can literally wipe out an entire village (especially if they don’t have the resources and medical advances).

Pull a stunt like that in America yes let them off easy for a first time offense (and because hell the virus is already rampid here anyways plus we have better medical care systems than many less developed countries) but it seems more serious to do that in another country where people are less tolerant of foreigners breaking laws especially laws to prevent spreading contagious disease that can lead to outbreaks n death.

This reminds me of the tourist dude that allegedly stole a poster while visiting North Korea .... much less serious offense .... he ended up being imprisoned there, then sent back to America in a coma and eventually died

Not gone lie ... i think if US had refused entry to sick people traveling and enforced mandatory quarantines we probably wouldnt be the country with the highest cases n deaths.

So many reoffend. I recall being in DUI class and this guy boasted about having a 7 page rap sheet. GROSS. Who knows what to do. It's up to the individual to make a better life for themselves.

So, they (anyone/any age) should be allowed to get away w/ the possibility of spreading a deadly, highly contagious disease?
She wants to be a Dr?
And spent 7 hours in public no mask or social distancing, + messed w/the tracking device.

Maybe they can get it expunged in the future.
I think our current leader will get then out of it anyway.

Totally agree. UGH it's crappy times for people. Hopefully people make better choices. The worst is the social media influencers and celebs. Stay the fuck HOME. It's not like they're desperate.

Duh Re: Students jailed for violating covid laws

    Heres CNN's article:

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/18/us/co...nds/index.html
    .
Grandma: "She did wrong, we're not denying that, the punishment doesn't meet that"

I bet if it was her that got sick from someone doing what she did, Grandma might think differently?

She did not just do something stupid. She exhibits no contrition or understanding that she did, to put the best construction on it, something stupid. She refuses to understand what she did was wrong. She has not learned. Instead she continues to arrogantly insist the law does not apply to her.

A second chance of for people who admit their mistakes and learn from them.

What is worse, her Grandmother who does not have the excuse of being young, is justifying her actions.

Shove both of them under the jail and leave them there until the sun goes out.

No wonder people in other countries don't like American tourists.

Zofia is right. Throwing an 18 year old kid in jail for 4 months for, well, socializing like an 18 year old kid, is absurd.

Yes she is in a foreign country and of course she should obey the local laws. But in any criminal justice system there is supposed to balance when determining a punishment, which ideally should fit the severity of the crime. This was just a kid who wanted to hang out with other kids her own age, I'm sure none of whom were overly worried about "social distancing" given the non-existent risk that COVID presents to them.

If any U.S. state tried to enforce a punishment this draconian there would be outrage and protests. At a certain point, hysteria has to give way to reasoned decision making and balanced approaches to managing these issues. Apparently the Cayman Islands is still in the hysteria phase of the process.

She could have gotten two years in prison and a $12,000 fine. She should be grateful to have gotten off with so much less than she deserved.

^ Saying that the she should feel lucky because the maximum punishment is even more outlandish than the one she did receive does not make it any less absurd.
