If a person doesn’t like the criminal justice system of a country .... then they shouldn’t go there N break laws there

    Problem solved.

Small islands especially have a right to be outraged from foreigners coming in blatantly disregarding laws that lead to deadly outbreaks. They don’t want to end up like the US leading the world in covid deaths.

Their country, their rules. Simple as that.

That's rather simplistic. The judges involved had the discretion to issue a punishment that was more fitting to the crime. The first one did just that. The second judge did not, deciding instead to make an example of an 18 year old girl.

But ok Miss, since you seem unfazed by harsh laws in other countries, are you equally ok with those laws being applied here? Should we start chopping off people's hands for shoplifting? How about chemical castration for misdemeanor solicitation offenses? These would sure be the stronger deterrents that you seemed so fond of in an earlier post.

I’m the same way about this 18 year old “girl” (btw 18 is an ADULT in most jurisdictions) how you did about that underage sex trafficked teen who you thought should have been locked up for life.

Oh by the way. She got out and is free now.

And as slowpoke said she’s fortunate she ain’t getting more severe punishment.

And as usual, you’re misinterpreting what I said. I never said I was unfazed by harsh punishments. I said smart people don’t go to countries with harsh punishments n break laws there.

You’ll never catch me going to places like North Korea, now Cayman Islands, Middle East, etc

Apples and bananas. My reasoning for keeping that psychopath locked up forever was well documented in that thread and IMHO the punishment most certainly fit the heinous nature of the crime.

This, OTOH, was simply a young woman who wanted to hang out with other young people and watch her friend compete, for which a 4 month jail sentence seems excessive by any measure. i will just add that she had two negative COVID tests, one before she flew and one after, which is not definitive evidence of lack of infection but likely gave her added comfort that she would not infect anyone.

This thread is actually more akin to the one where you seemed to be ok with the police recording nude people in private places. Idk Miss, but you seem to have an odd view of what you think is ok for LE to do to people given where you are posting.

You're comparing a few months in jail with chopping off hands and chemical castration? That's ridiculous.

What? I have not indicated my stance. Think before crying "he only posted that because he disagrees," because it's borderline close to a high school girl lamenting "they only did that because they don't like you." And didn't you once post that the male members of this forum are supposed to be able to handle your responses? Don't dish it out if you can't take it.

Anyway, the punishment won't fix the underlying issue that she's not sorry about her actions. As the grandmother stated "She’s afraid that once she makes it back to the States, everyone will hate her," meaning she's only sorry about the consequences. Also harsh punishments don't necessarily lower recidivism rates.

But at the same time imprisonment and fines don't help people understand why they should stay in quarantines nor that not doing so is putting their own desires over others' (worse as it's some guy she very likely won't end up with, given their ages). She could have just asked that the jet ski competition organizers film the thing so she could watch it later. But again, she put her own desires over others'.

    Now that that's over:

Provide a link to the statutes prescribing those penalties.

Ok, my bad dp, I should have said: "Dp, put on your big boy pants and avoid getting snarky" and left the underlying cause of your lack of emotional control undefined. Fair enough.

And the key difference in what I do vs. your comment is that my pointed humor is inevitably weaved into a topical point while yours was just standalone snark, like a fresh turd just plopped onto the carpet. If you want to take a shot be better than that.

As far as the rest (this goes for you and eagle), putting someone in prison is a very serious punishment, whether for 4 months or 4 years. It's why one must generally commit a felony her in the U.S. for that to be considered a viable punishment. To do that to an 18 year old woman, who btw had ample reason to believe that she was safe, for simply wanting to hang out with other young people is indescribably harsh. The initial fine was big enough that it should have driven the point home for most people considering the same.

Four months is a misdemeanor. Felonies start at a year. The maximum for her offense was two years.

The selfish twat will be just fine in prison, if her family had the money to send her to the Cayman Islands for lockdown they have enough money to make her prison time equal to a shitty dorm room. Her biggest worry will be if she can even get into the third rate medical school she was destined for with a Criminal record.

    No Rick. Get it straight

You’re okay with a 16year old sex trafficked victim being locked up forever because she was not white.

But when it comes to a 18 year old ADULT who had no qualms waltzing her entitled ass to another country, break their rules, potentially spread highly contagious n deadly disease... that’s somehow okay to you.

And btw....traipsing over n spreading deadly diseases - sounds pretty sociopathic to me.

And yes, this issue aside, (not negating it at all, VERY SERIOUS) anyone visiting foreign countries needs to brush up on their laws..when you go outside the US, you are subject to the laws of the country you visit!

Look up Singapore, they're VERY STRICT! Jail time for littering, or even popping a piece of candy in your mouth on the train is common.

I remember a UK tourist in Maldives, (Muslim btw) they have plain, in view signs on the beach saying beachwear is fine on the actual beach itself they don't want anyone in beachwear near the religious buildings.

So this lady up & walks by there, she was arrested & struggled w)the cops, they told her to cover-up & she refused!

I think it ended up w/their official apologizing, but damn!

I'm pretty sure I covered the story here, it's been awhile

I think Americans need to do research before visiting other countries to learn the local laws and culture.... and stop acting entitled. If I was jailed for doing something like that in another country, I would take the punishment and learn my lesson.
So... I don’t blame the local government for looking out for themselves in a time of war(because that’s what it is, war with a virus) This is where the term “ugly American” comes from.

No one does that. They should, but they don't. What is that series... "Locked up abroad?" Something like that. It's one thing if you're hauling Cocaine back, but there's a bunch of stupider shit people go through. Remember that caining kid? They basically spanked him with a stick and everybody in the United States lost their minds over it. Well he shouldn't have been doing what he was doing. I'd have just gritted my teeth and got it over with. I'm not a fan of caining, but he should have behaved himself, not be some dipshit fratboy, and that's their laws. They have the RIGHT to enforce their laws. I bet that dude's not gonna fuck up in that country anymore.

When the best you can do is make a nasty comment then yes, you lack emotional control. You'd be hard pressed to find anything like that from me anywhere on this site. Be better than that.

As far as the rest, if your second paragraph detailing her lack of remorse was not intended to support the notion that she deserved what she got then mea culpa, but it certainly seemed to, notwithstanding your follow-up paragraph.

As far as that last point though, do you really think that anyone by now is confused about the supposed benefits of remaining in quarantine? You aren't actually convinced that you are especially well educated on the stated benefits of that policy in comparison to everyone else who has been hearing it nonstop for nine months now, do you? Now I realize that this last comment does not favor her cause, but I'm guessing that she knew precisely why the policy existed - she just did what she did anyway, likely because she had two negative tests and felt that the policy was draconian in her case. Agree or disagree as you will.

Brown was a 16 year old psychopath who: (1) the cops determined was clearly running the show with her BF, who was a drug addled moron that they couldn't even find a charge to pin to; (2) Stated that she killed the guy because she wanted to feel what it was like to do so; and (3) murdered the guy in cold blood execution style when he was face down on the pillow. All of that of course was after she lied to him about her age (which she admitted) and then went into his house armed and ready. The puff pieces written about her conveniently neglect to paint the complete picture that the jury was provided. It is downright chilling. If she doesn't kill anyone else again in the future it will be a minor miracle.

But ok, let's let psychopaths go free and throw a girl just two years older in jail for attending a sporting event with two negative COVID tests under her belt. Makes about as much sense as getting incensed all worked up because a guy successfully fought to keep his private parts off of the Internet, which some here seemed to believe that he deserved for the dastardly crimes of paying for consensual sex and being rich enough to actually defend himself.

I must not be "woke" enough to understand this new way of thinking.

With that I'll bow out of this train wreck and just hope that a little more balance comes into play during her next appeal.

You are assuming I support purely punitive sentences to pursue vengeance instead of rehabilitation. Yes, she lacked remorse and clearly never intended to follow the law. No, it doesn't mean her sentence will do anything to solve the underlying problem.

No, I would not be partaking in "help[ing her] understand why [she] should stay in quarantines." But she doesn't understand that her concern should not be "Everyone will hate [me]," and it should instead be "What I did was wrong."

Duh Re: Students jailed for violating covid laws

Good thing she didn't visit N.Korea or somewhere similar, (I think it's off limits now anyway).

For the life of me, I don't get why anyone thinks they can visit another country & do whatever they want w/o consequences.

Some wind up dead, near dead like Otto Warmbier (in a coma & later passing away).
There's the risk if being trafficked too.
Im not justifying any of this, tho I feel this girl deserves punishment. Does what she did merit what she got? Idk.

Even in the best of circumstances, you're in a foreign country, the smallest thing can be looked at very differently, & treated very harshly.

A member of my former church flew overseas, he ended up in jail, allegedly for smuggling.
Did he do it? No idea. An older man, retired vet. Passed away, we wrote letters on his behalf.

North Korea will lock you up, hard labor, for 15-20 years. I wouldn't fuck with them with a ten foot pole!
