Default What is your current up to date birth control?

I'm obviously not having anything unprotected but I'm fed up with how PMS-y I get before my period. I wind up masturbating far too much a day for a week, eating a lot, change of mood all over the place, etc. right before my period. Hello hormonal imbalance.. Kinda scared to try a pill or a ring or what is safest? I have PCOS anyways. I tried one birth control pill for a day and backed out worried over side effects reading reviews online. What has worked for you currently so I can consider my options? I go through an ultra sized tampon an hour a day for numerous days on my period and not having fun every month dreading it.... *sigh* obviously I'm thinking of the next few days of hell where I have to wake up every hour of the night changing tampons. Or TMI* faster changes in tampons due to massive blood clots due to PCOS. It's a simple nightmare.

I currently take Vienva birth control. So far, so good I don’t really notice problems. I switched to it, because I buy birth control online as a mail subscription service and that brand was the preference and I wanted my stuff cheap. (I don’t have health insurance and I pay out of pocket)

Before that, it was Trisprintec. I think it was good, but I realized many years very late it’s probably good to take a B vitamin supplement. I read the packet included one day and found out it can rob those nutrients for whatever reason. Helped me feel less lethargic in general.

Have also done depo-provera shots. You need to take calcium supplements and my university nurse made me sign something where I said I would take 1000mg of calcium daily. I liked having no periods. But on the other hand, I was a lot more UTI-prone back then. It was recommended not to take the shot for more then 2 years due to bone density concerns, so I only did it for two years.

What I’ve taken since 16 years old:
    Yaz—>Trisprintec—>Depo Shot—>Trisprintec—>Vienva

None of those options really affected my weight, as far as I know. Back when I was 16, the Yaz did help my pimples and period pain though.

I’ve never done it, but I’ve also considered getting extra packets of birth control to skip my periods on purpose. I’d have to get in and change my subscription settings though.

Remember YAZ BC and my ex roomie taking depo. I'm writing Vienva down to do extra research on what to take. Thanks so much !

Micronor currently. Progestin only. I've had issues with estrogen based pills.

If you wanna gain a ton of weight then go with Depo otherwise go with something else. I gained too much weight from Depo, never again.

I remember I was researching in the past and this woman died of a blood clot or something’ in her leg due to birth control. Freaked me out.

Yeah it’s always the horror stories in reviews that are scary LOL! I only want BC for hormonal balance, I’m anemic as well (hurray to having so many health issues haha) and it’s just too much heavy blood loss as well with my hormones out of whack from PCOS.

I was hoping for some new product or something on the market to balance things out.

I am wondering what a good birth control is also, I have found a pill birth control that works for me as far as not gaining weight or too many side effects but i dont like the idea of taking a pill daily, I also am not ready to tie my tubes what if I want another baby.. I was going to get marina not sure how its spelled but the iud sounds good however when I looked up reviews online it says if you have a partner w a big dick it can cut it cause of the strings that come out of cervix. My husband is huge and felt the ring so i am thinking thats what would happen then id have to remove it and im not feeling like thats gonna work now but my dr said there is just a small amount of hormone only released in your uterus so its not systemic which I like...I hate the shot, gained tons of weight and after about 3 of them id spot all the time, its really a turn off when fucking..

I'm on birth control for the same reason as you, hormone control and long, heavy periods. My doctor put me on Sprintec, which I don't like at all. It hasn't helped much, I still get really long periods every few months. When I called her she told me that's a side effect of this medication, so...... I'm not sure why she put me on it. Anyway, if your doctor recommends Sprintec I recommend you say no or discuss this side effect.

I heard of some people using Birth control for no periods? Are those the hormonal birth controls and safe?

Yeah I’d rather bleed heavy instead of gaining weight. There’s gotta be a few good ones out there without major side effects.

ugh...why wasn’t I born a male LOL. Can’t find a good man worth getting pregnant with but still I have to suffer heavy periods monthly. I’ve even overslept through tampons at times to where I’d buy those heavy pads as backup. It’s just miserable bleeding like that.

^^ikr, I hate constantly having to think about birth control I mean since like I was 16 except when I wanna get pregnant, which I literally get pregnant as soon as I stop birth control so if I don’t want a baby I must take birth control, I’m starting to feel like I’m doing some kind of damage somewhere, it’s just been too long. I’m gonna need them to make an iud without those hard strings that should do it for the rest of the time I’ll have to worry about it, or something like that. Cause when I know I’m done w kids I’m just gonna tie the tubes how nice will that be! I find that being on the pill gives me a much more dealable period !

copper IUD tho I just about fainted when they put that in. I couldn't do all that hormonal shit and that shit never killed my periods neither nor gave me bigger boobs. just made me fatter and more moody LOL. I also can't be fucked keeping a pill routine unless I'm old/decrepit/will die if I don't take my meds basically. Actually the hormonal shit made it so I bled a tiny bit every fucking day. I would rather have a regular period and then most of the month zero bleeding.

I use Mirena IUD to not have a period ever. I'm on my 3rd one, I replace it every 3 years instead of the 5 or so they say you can keep it in for, because I start to experience a period after 3 years of having it in (I guess due to hormone levels decreasing). Never had any side effects.

My partner got a vasectomy. I haven't used birth control, hormonal or IUD, in the last 10 years.

I do find that there are many things that can increase unpleasant PMS symptoms, such as alcohol, coffee, and not exercising (gotta get your blood moving regularly!). And there are lifestyle changes that help, such as an anti-inflammatory diet, GLAs, omega 3s, etc... but obviously those are not overnight fixes and require time and experimentation to find what works for you. These days, with the gym closed, all I've been doing is eating well and going for nightly walks of varying lengths for exercise. I drink matcha and black tea instead of coffee. I used to have problems with bleeding through tampons, but I've used the FemmyCycle cup for years, and am obsessed with that thing.

I do think that raspberry leaf tea and turmeric (with ginger and piperine, nature's ibuprofen) supplements can help with discomfort the week leading up to your period. If you have a lot of hormonal acne, then spearmint tea is like nature's spironolactone, though its anti-androgenic effects can also decrease libido.

If you have pcos, I would try the low dose birth control pill to regulate your hormones you can always stop taking it if you have side effects but I was fine with it and it helped me with hormonal acne and I didn’t l gain a lot of weight but def I had side effects years ago when I was on a higher dose.

I have PCOS as well. I've been on basically everything other than the the implant and an IUD. Pills, patches, rings, depo shot... I liked the patch the best (affected me the least side effect wise) but you can't really put it anywhere discrete which is why I've been on a journey to find something better. I'm on Junel rn, but have only been on it less than a month. very minimal spotting thus far and the only real issue i had was dizziness and nausea the first 2 days. plan on using it continuously (like 3-6 months at a time) once i've had my first period on it to minimize the probability of spotting in the future.

I haven't been on BC for about 10 years. When I was on the pill I had to switch to a progesterone only pill because the other kind of pills with the estrogen caused my blood pressure to Skyrocket. Now that I'm 47 I'm not on anything. Even though I still get my period I'm not really that concerned about getting pregnant. I don't even know if I can at this point! Does anybody know about this stuff? Watch me have a surprise baby LOL I would be too scared to have a baby at this point with the way the world is, plus I would be concerned about the baby having Down syndrome.
