Mind Blowing River Dave, lives on another's property 27 yrs

What do y'all think of this?
    He was denied adverse possession.
He said the former owner allowed him to live on the 73 acre lot, (verbal agreement only) the present owner just found out from the county that he lives there (this was in 2012, they been trying to get him to leave since) was going to be taxed for his 'house' (since burned down) + charged to bring it up to code.

He was in jail for trespassing, he's out now.

I have a Devil's Advocate opinion, IMO it was the landlord's job to get him off the property.

Squatting is very common. Just fyi

I just scanned it but personally I would just let him live on the land.
He seemed to be taking care of it and they could create a stewardship agreement.

I’m not sure about the state laws there but River Dave should always watch tax records on that land.
If an owner defaults and HE is using the land AND paying the tax he has more legal rights to it.

If the new owner has 73 acres what harm is one for Dave?
    People can be such assholes.
Creating a partnership would be less labor for the owner too . Checking on land , monitoring it for weather related conditions , and monitoring visitors are all things Dave could do.

Read about this lady who owned 100 acres, some company came in & basically stripped her land of trees, they came in helicopters!
They did 100k of damage, offered her 25k & she can't do anything?

I read an issue w/him staying there was the current owner is/was being taxed for the 'home' (structure really, it's now burned down) + code violations, needs a road, & septic tank among other things.

^ She can sue them and she should.

Sometimes oil , mineral mining rights , and timber cutting use can be sold separately from residential use on land .
She should double check the use rights.
If she has full use rights she should sue.

    Yes, I've been reading that!

It apears they stole her timber, cant imagine why she would not have a good cause of action.

"I'm from the government, and here to help." - The current land owner, in VT, (River Dave is in NH) also in his 80's had no idea until the NH town accessor increased the taxes for a 'structure' on the property. While in jail the property and his belongings burned to the ground.

Not a lawyer, but was always told that if you let someone take possession of part of your property, after a number of years it becomes theirs. Hoping the publicity gets a high-powered pro-bono lawyer involved...

^ I would love it if the owner would just admit they were being a dick.
Hey it happens. Create a partnership and a land sharing opportunity.
Farm and grow good. Raise animals. Give tours. Share the land. Be an example. Don't be a dick.

I feel bad for the poor old dude!He is 81.I hope he finds a good place to go after this, maybe some people with the same kind of heart will invite him to live on their land and they can collaborate and grow food and raise animals together.

He was denied Adverse Posession already in court.
He had permission from the previous owner to stay, it wasn't in writing, but it kicks out the AP from what I read.

That is right. Permission negates adverse possession.

Looks like this happening to him ended up being a blessing:

    https://apnews.com/article/river-dav...740b6a57ffc63d

Lidstone, a logger by trade who chopped his firewood and grew his food in the woods along the Merrimack River in the town of Canterbury. He initially built the cabin with his wife, from whom he is now estranged, although he said they are still married.

He said he’s not grieving the loss of his life in isolation.

“Maybe the things I’ve been trying to avoid are the things that I really need in life,” said Lidstone, who drifted apart from his family. “I grew up never being hugged or kissed, or any close contact.

“I had somebody ask me once, about my wife: ‘Did you really love her?’ And the question kind of shocked me for a second. I ... I’ve never loved anybody in my life. And I shocked myself because I hadn’t realized that. And that’s why I was a hermit. Now I can see love being expressed that I never had before.”
