I only wish it broke it down between city and rural, New York for example has a huge difference between Manhattan and upstate / podunk. Still it highlights 2X higher comparing top to bottom.

Is this for one bedroom apartments, or all rental units of any size?

I'm in Maryland, and out of curiosity, I took a look at what the rent is now for a 2-bedroom at the apartment complex where I lived in 2017 - 2019.

STARTING at $1,820/month, and some of them don't include the washer and dryer. Damn! When I moved out (April 2019), my rent had been $1,118/month for the 2-BR. And that was a unit that didn't have a washer and dryer.

Just looked to see what it is now for the 1-BR...it's $1,500+/month now.

Not only are rents up nearly everywhere, but I'm hearing stories of landlords being complete Dicks, not doing any maintenance, because tenants are less able to move anywhere else.

Yeah there's always going to be slumlords out there.

My last rental was a very good experience and the maintenance was done on time and perfectly, but that is not always the case.

My old 1 bedroom in New England was considered a bargain. $1300/month including all utilities. No dishwasher, laundry was shared in the hallway (not coin op tho, we could just use it)

Florida looks about right in my city. So with utilities included that would be around 2k. You'll need to make minimum 5k a month to be comfortable.

Maybe it's because their tenants are not paying rent and can't be evicted. Thus they don't have the money for maintenance.

Good point. Not the case in one situation though - a trendy, expensive restaurant with a roof leak was told that it was the tenants job to fix since it was an 'inside' problem. Ceiling falling in. They paid to fix it and also to stop the leak on the roof.

The thing with NY is that's the whole state, which is HUGE, but not the average for NYC. We would be tied with Hawaii, then.

Exactly. Oregon's number looks way low to me, too. $1300 here is hard to find, even in the worst part of town, no utilities included.

Maybe it's useful just to see how minimum-wage workers would struggle in most states? Idk

I didn't realize housing was so cheap in Iowa. I think I'm moving in.)

I think it said average- maybe it’s the low cost places in rural Oregon and higher cost apartments in more desirable places of that state by the beach and mountains?

My state is pretty accurate. Although I bitch about the lack of diversity, i have to admit the pros of not stressing about paying high rent outweigh the bad. I can’t imagine dancing in a competitive market with high rent-I suppose that’s why there’s more on the menu at strip clubs in the bigger cities. Hence why I haven’t moved to a bigger city-I don’t ever want to feel pressured into doing something I’m not comfortable doing because rent is due and there’s no other way to pay it. Strangely validating-looks like I’ll be staying here till I finish school and can get a job somewhere else. That’s been my plan, but I’ve definitely though about finishing school out of state. I’ll say low rent states are cheap for a reason, but I’ll admit the pros outweigh the cons. I have a pretty good quality of life: good people, low crime, and affordable living. Suppose I should be grateful and quit complaining.

You have to remember in rural states, many people are not college educated, conservative, and close knit (all up in your business)-not exactly a hospitable environment for a sex worker/stripper!

Yeah, the math tells me I should just move to a small place with a club I like. And make prob the same money or more elsewhere.

But alas, I like being able to blend in. And be where I’m not too “exotic” looking (and even easier to blend in) And the obvious of having more amenities. So more expensive city it is for me. But at least it’s not LA or NYC expensive so meh

That's true, but I think it's always been the case, some more so than others, of course.

Re: Florida, that $1566 number is heavily influenced by very expensive beach apartments on both coasts and the Southeast Florida region in general. There are plenty of much cheaper options to be had if you look a little further inland and don't mind commuting 20-30 minutes to work in a club. Heck there are also much cheaper options in neighborhoods hosting some clubs as many of the clubs are zoned in poorer sections of their respective towns.

Last time I was down there ( May ) I did a little browsing for a condo or a house. There was a BIG difference between West of I-95 and East. I was told that it was the same on the West Coast. East of I-75 was much more reasonable than West.
