When I was in Thailand I played with tiger cubs. They're so adorable!

I used to own a caracal and I've held baby lions , baby bears and a leopard cub. I played with a 5 month old tiger cub and still have scars on my hands from where he playfully scratched me. I am now against private ownership of big cats and petting zoos. For every knowledgeable and responsible owner there are too many ignorant and greedy fools who exploit the cats or just don't know what they are doing. Too many people find out the hard way that a full grown tiger eats 10 lbs. of meat PER DAY. Do the math especially with what inflation is doing to meat prices. A full grown leopard eats about 4 to 5 lbs. a day; a cougar about 3 to 4 lbs. Plus you have to give them fresh meaty bones to help them get enough calcium. Plus a tiger needs AT LEAST 10,000 square feet of fenced in space. A leopard about half that. My caracal lived in an old one car garage with another 100 sq. ft. of attached and fenced outdoor space .

I didn't feed her cat food although many ignorant dummies do. After she outgrew bottle feeding she ate mostly fresh rabbit and pigeon. Some venison and wild boar here and there. All raw and warmed up to 90 degrees F on a special table. It is needed to prevent digestive problems UNLESS you want to wring necks and throw them fresh killed chickens , turkeys , pigeons , bunnies and rats.

And the Vet bills. Your average Vet is NOT qualified to work on big cats and those that are charge a LOT more than the neighborhood vet. Most ordinary cat vaccines are NG. Fortunately my Vet worked with the Miami Zoo and could get what we needed . At Premium prices ! Plus I got inspected EVERY year by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation and Broward County.

The petting zoos in Thailand have generated mixed reports. Some kill the tigers when they get too big and sell the parts on the Black Market. Some sell the adults to private and public zoos. Even the Buddhist monks that run one of the most popular places ( Tiger Temple, I think ? ) have a spotty track record. ALL separate mothers and cubs traumatizing both. In hindsight, my caracal would have been better off staying with her mom until she was AT LEAST 6 months old. I wouldn't have been able to bottle feed her at 8 weeks and develop the bond that we did. Even so, I was the ONLY one she ever let pick her up and my then girlfriend was the only other person who could pet her.

Every time I am tempted to own another big cat I lie down until it goes away.

Sadly, zoos may be the only thing that keeps tigers from going extinct. There are only a few thousand left, living in the wild.

Very sad. Very true. Poaching and loss of habitat are the main threats to our dwindling tiger population.
