Betty White dead at 99

Not really the news I was expecting to see today, even if she was on the cusp of 100. Of course I wasn’t around for most of her career and it’s really mostly because of watching rerun shows that I know of her, but a lot of people seemed to have this idea of immortality about her. Every flower dies. Would’ve like to have seen her celebrate her 100th birthday (which would’ve been Jan 17), or at least not have this happen in a time of year which is supposed to be festive for her family and loved ones.

In 1954, Betty White had black tap dancer, Arthur Duncan on her show. When viewers in the South complained and threatened to boycott the show unless he was removed, Betty's response was “I’m sorry. Live with it,” and had him back on the show two more times. NBC ended up cancelling her show over this.

When World War II broke out, Betty White put her career on hold and volunteered for the American Women's Voluntary Services. Her assignment included the transportation of military supplies through California.

I think Betty would have found it hilarious that the week she died, after all the false stories of her death, would be the one when she is on the cover of people talking about turning 100.
