Default Stripper getting old but still broke

Are there any of you out there who are getting old [I guess over 35 or so] and sense that the end is near but you haven't saved up ANY money during all that time [I know it's possible despite the large amounts of money that some girls make]

What do you do when the looks are gone? Some of you have even said that you wouldn't even rent an apartment to a stripper? Some folks just don't want to deal with former strippers? Does the future consist of standing on a street corner?

Hmm..... that sounds an alot like something that Lover character would say.....

A stripper is just like anyone else. Lots of people get into their midpoint in their lives and haven't saved or invested yet. I'd say a stripper who finds herself in that position for whatever reason would do like anyone else- get another job.

I'm young...but this is exactly WHAT I AM TRYING TO AVOID!! There is nothing worse than working, and having nothing to show for it when it's all said and done. I need to have some stocks, CD's, investments or some real estate in my name..Can you blame me..I just want to live comfortably.

Well, if you know the old joke you know what I am talking about.

I am a part-time 34 year old dancer. Check the gallery, under 'Corey', you would be surprised. I had my first degree before I started dancing and then got my second. I became a notable theatrical actress, in a big city and I learned the computer trade and started investing in my mid-twenties. I have been engaged to various successful, educated men, ( I wouldn't dream of dating any other kind) and now I am married to a multi-degreed man who makes a lot of money and we live in a posh section of LA, CA. I am now a film actress who gets work and btw, I played a college student two weeks ago on a TV show.

I am not living in a card board box. In fact, I am probably living better than YOU, 'Chair'.

    Like I said, NEVER assume.

if "chair's" comment is on the level, it is definitely an unfortunate situation. I have known a few dancers who have also found themselves in that situation. Again I'll call on the analogy of strippers being much like professional athletes in the sense that their peak earnings years are typically in their late 20's and (with certain exceptions) by the time they are in their mid-30's they no longer have the "goods" or the energy level to compete effectively for the few best paying opportunities with major league teams/clubs.

Even though there are a good number of exceptional girls who can continue to be "marketable" well beyond age 35, it's absolutely essential that dancers in their early 20s plan for the probability that by the time they reach age 30 they'll no longer have to depend on dancing income. If a girl is willing to follow a disciplined savings and investment strategy, there's no reason that she can't have a very sizeable nest egg built up after 10 years of dancing. With that nest egg paying $10k $20k $50k a year in interest and capital gains for the rest of her life, it then creates options in regard to the type of career she chooses to pursue after retiring from dancing.

On the other hand, if a girl is 35, has not saved or invested, has not taken care of herself such that age is beginning to show, and has not educated herself to become qualified for decent paying straight jobs, this can lead to a very "unpretty" situation.

Melonie,in this bear market, you would need around 500,000 in investments,to get the kind of returns you are talking about and upwards of 1 million,I dont know too many dancers retiring with that amount, most of the girls I know that moved on had around 100-150000 in savings when they quit, most owned homes as well, but 150,000 isnt going to get you much of a return nowadays, maybe 5 years ago.

Bear market? Since September 17, 2001, the DJIA stood at 8,920.70 Today, it closed at 9838.03. The S&P 500 is up 23% in the last twelve months and dividend yields have risen as well. If this is a bear market, I sure as hell want to see the bull market!

The end of stripping is not the end of LIFE! There are many many other jobs to chose from out there in the world. As for those who have not saved, well get a job some place.

There are always very nice restaurants in need of a hostess, or waitress, cocktail waitress etc. These jobs require NO degree, and pay very well if you get into a very busy place of business.

Lots of people work all there lives to have a beautiful home, cars etc. And lose it for many reasons. I admire those who pick up the pieces and just move on.

Age....well a lady never tells her "real' age does she ?

I'm a 35-year old dancer that has very little saved up. However, I've only been dancing a few months. My life situation with a rotten ex-husband left me with nothig. So not all, "old" girls have squandered away their earnings.

However, I do know what you mean. I knew a 40+ dancer once. Her body was pretty good for that age, but you could see the age in her face. It was sad.

Well there's your problem, listening to Merill. Simply buying a DJIA fund would have been better.

if you think its a good market, give me some tips
You used specific terms, bull and bear to refer to the market. The market presently and for the last year has not been a bear market. Learn to use the terms correctly and you won't appear to be a fool.

Also zofia,it may be up 23% since last year, but down 85%from a three year ago
No. Since it's high three years ago, the S&P 500 is down roughly 30 percent. Get your facts straight.

While there is no requirement for factual accuracy on this board, it helps. Please, in the future try to check your fracts before posting something that is so blatantly wrong.

I wouldnt consider someone with my sizeable portfolio to be a fool, were dancers here not market experts and if you read my post what I was implying was in this crappy market, you would need quite a sizable portfolio for the kinds of returns melonie was speaking,by the way how big is your portfolio, since your such an expert? And you so blatenly cut people down.

I started a month before I was 23. I personally have only started to think about "growing my wealth" in the last 6 months and I'm 25 now (since late October).... I certainly do NOT want to be like alot of strippers are when they leave the industry: Nice car and/or house yet nothing else. I'm quite happy to delay getting my first car (I've got a good reliable moped motorcycle) until such a time I deem it is necessary and/or I can afford it comfortably.

Unfortunate as it is... it is the norm for dancers who started when they were young (under 20) and retire/quit 10 years later to not have much to show at all for it. Alot of young dancers forget it is work (you can enjoy it) and not a lifestyle choice.

I think if you've saved up enough money, you should day trade. That could make sooo much money in a day if you know what your doing. It's really important for dancers to become financially savvy. Read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" it gave me a whole bunch of great ideas.

I hope Carina is using the term "day trade" in a fashion different from what it literally means. True day trading is buying stocks and selling them very quickly or literally within the same day.

Day trading is a very risky endeavor taking lots of work every day. I am not doubting anyones abilities, but 4 out of 5 people or higher LOSE money at options and day trading. Day trading is a FULL_TIME job (10-12 hours a day), not a hobby. The short-term trading strategies of day trading REQUIRE constant analysis and a very definite temperament and personality.

I suspect she means active investing, which is less intense and has buys based on a longer term horizon. That is readily within the means of many more people, and takes less intense effort and is far safer.

There is an old saying. "Know how to make a small fortune? Start with a large fortune and day trade."

Learn to read, I said you appear to be a fool. But, since you seem to think the shoe fits, wear it.

were dancers here not market experts and if you read my post what I was implying was in this crappy market,
I read your post. That's your problem. You deliberately misused specifically defined terms. Now that you have been caught, you are trying to change what you said. How disgusting.

And you so blatenly cut people down.
No, you cut down yourself when you either through ignorance, or deceit decided to misuse terms. In any case, you need to do your research before you blather on about things you so clearly know nothing about.

Zofia, you might as well just have called me a fool by your comment, simply stated I sounded the fool is the same thing,I aslo never changed my original comment and was right about what I said about the amount of money you would need invested to get the kind of returns melonie was stating, several people I spoke with at merrill lynch agreed as well that we were still in a bear market,so I guess I used the term correctly, you sound like an awfully bitter girl, people dont just call people fools and discusting because you think they didnt use terminology correctly, people like this are just usually sad ,jealous people, who think they have to cut other people down to make theirself look better.

I do not wish to get into the middle of your discussion but the traditional convention is that a bear market is termed as over when the Dow rises 20% from its recent low (conversely bear whenit falls 20%). That means it became a bull market about at Dow 9000.

At today's close of 9856, it has been a new bull market since about March. These designations are entirely arbitrary and bear no relation to any prior peak. From the recent low the Dow is up 35%. Other people use the S&P 500 as a reference point and date the timing differently. It is also considered a new bull market at this time. These are the 2 most popularly considered measures.

I think I had better get rid of my portfolio at merrill lynch then, they obviously have been giving me bad advise, not to mention, not managing my portfolio very well.
