I probably sound like a broken record, but I loved "Life Behind the Garter." Unlike others, it's not just about one stripper. It's a compilation of stories by a bunch of dancers. The book makes you laugh, cry and at times get kind of queasy. I couldn't put it down and I was wanting more by the end. My copy looks awful - I've loaned it to half the dancers in my club and I would say that all but one really liked it. We've even written the author to find out what happened in some of the cases. He wrote us back and asked for our stories. I don't know if I want to share or not, but I do have some doozies!
I tried to find the book on amazon and couldn't. Who's the author (or compiler)??
Hi. I went to amazon.com to order it. But I looked inside the book and there is a website for orders too. it's That should take you to it. Enjoy.
I read this book, too. It's interesting because she travelled around the US dancing, so there are clubs that I recognize in there. Plus, she visited clubs that girls from this site work in.I've read "Strip City" by Lily Burana. Good book, very entertaining. I recommend!
Is there any local bookstores that would carry Life Behind The Garter? I looked for it and no one has it.
Shayden : )
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail!
I couldn't find it at any book stores either - I ordered it online at amazon, but a friend of mine who ordered it got it from the 800 number on the website. It's I also just ordered another book off of amazon about dancers - I'll let you know how it is! Good to see people writing stuff about us that is real - not always pretty, but pointing out that some of us are really good people.
I cannot find "Ivy League Stripper" or "Life Behind the Garter!!" If anyone has a copy they'd allow me to borrow, I promise I would be very diligent about returning it, or at least paying you for it![]()
NOOO! DON'T ORDER LIFE BEHIND THE GARTER! There's a REASON it's not in bookstores. It's a privately sold book because IT SUCKS! Goosebumps have more of a plot... and I think they're longer. I tried to return it and they never contacted me back. Amazon is going to end up covering it.

Bella, I'm trying to figure out who you are. I know that there are some really bitter people in my past who didn't want this book to go to press. I'm sorry if you didn't like the book, but don't be dishonest. I am in constant contact with Amazon and there was no issue ever posted. I also check the email from the website posted in the book every three to four hours. I decided to self-publish, as many authors do these days. I never even contacted a publisher because they take as much as 90% of sales. Please don't make statements when you don't know all the facts. I have had about a 95% approval rating on this book - sorry you are in the 5% who disagreed. Ladies, borrow the book from someone if you don't want to buy it. I would just love to have you read it. And by the way, I believe the book is over 220 pages. There is definately more to your disdain than simply not liking the book. PS - Goosebumps is a best-selling series. Don't put it down, either. Some people have different tastes than you.

Just going down the site on postings, new to the "forum." I read this book and I really liked it. I was kind of weirded out because one of the main characters has my name. I also had trouble believing this manager was "for real." But, I liked the dancers stories and the stories about the customers. The writing was okay - I don't think the guy ever claimed to hold a Master's degree in writing - he manages a strip club for heaven's sake! I really couldn't put it down once I started reading it. I'd recommend it. Every one has different tastes!
Nooo, I wrote you that e mail myself!! I wanted to return it when I saw it. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, didn't know you would see the post. oops. But, I definately feel VERY RIPPED OFF!

Lacey, No I tried to take into consideration that he was NOT an english major... but you CAN hire people to not only help out but even take your stories and write them. It COULD have been a good book, but many of the simple rules of writing were broken, making it sound awkward.

Bella, that's cool. I'm a big believer in that everyone is entitled to their own opinion - I think sometimes though, people give their stories to someone else and the truth gets lost in the translation. I actually had an extreme trauma happen to me when I was a teenager and I wanted a writer to do my story. She completely changed it around to where it just wasn't me anymore. I'd rather have "rough" writing and interesting stories than a perfectly written essay that isn't real. I want to contribute to the writer's next book - you should too. (Did you get my posting about your english paper?) Write him a complete story and work with him on the next book. You've read the first one, you come across very bright and articulate. I always look to turn the negative into the positive.
Bella, if you think about it, if the book even took you only four hours to read (which would be really fast!) and it cost you 20 bucks, how much do you make in four hours? We're used to getting 15-20 for three minutes worth of entertainment. (The average lap dance) On that scale, you just got about $960 worth of entertainment for twenty dollars. It's all relative honey!
Huh? Lapdances? Uhm... No I wasn't getting dances, I was reading a bad book. You don't pay for every 2 minutes of a movie you see!!

Bella, read my post to you on our site. I think you could make yourself feel better about this. Help him on the next book! I'm going to. The guy has a real desire to represent us as people. Let's not crucify him - let's add to it. He also has the ability to get the word out there, when most of us don't have the resources. I have been corresponding with him and I believe his intentions are honorable. Email him yourself. Contribute to the next project and help make it great. Maybe he'll hire you to edit it so there aren't those mistakes you talked about.
I don't think he should hire me... I'm sure there were even mistakes that I didn't catch. He should hire a real editor. i'm not bashing his intentions, just his book. With a little more thought and creativity, it could have been good. Unforetunatly, I don't have any exciting stories... I wouldn't add much jazz to his book. Thanks though

Hey everyone - I was privately contacted by the author of "Life Behind the Garter" He's afraid if this comes from him he'll get crucified (Please don't crucify me - I'm just the messenger!) They are apparently going to be doing a movie based on the book. He wants to use real dancers. I referred one of my friends who is really an actress (aren't we all?) because I can't do it (my mother would die). You can email him at: [email protected] He said the last time he posted only one person responded. I'm just passing this on because I think his intentions are good. I would love to see a movie about dancers that portrays them well. If not, no biggie. On to other topics!

I've only read ILS personally, but here are some other stripper related books:
G-Strings and Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars and Male Desire by Katherine Frank.
The title sounds fun, but I've been told this book is about as exciting as a doctoral dissertation, so you might want to skip this one.

I only read part of it, but I remember thinking it was like a text book. It was a very dry read. Has anyone here read through it?G-Strings and Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars and Male Desire by Katherine Frank.

Hi, my name is Sleepy and I'm powerless over strippers...

THe only one I have to add is not only about stripping, it is about all of sex work with a chapter on stripping and some other relavent chapters. It's called Turning Pro by Magdalene Meretrix. I found it well written, positive, and interesting although I am not interested in becoming a prositute, porn star, dominatrix, or do phone sex, it is fun to read about.
