Default Packing tips for TOO much STUFF!!!

Sorry for the non-board related post first of all, but I need help and I've been asking everyone I know for tips with this.

I found out on sunday that I can get out of a really bad apartment lease if I move out by sunday. The building management guy said I needed to let him know by tues. I decided to go for it. I already have a new place, and a moving company coming on sunday to move my stuff (I'm spoiled and don't want to carry all my boxes up a four flight walk-up). This is just a terrible time for me to do this because I had a new puppy shipped to me on wednesday, two birthdays this week, and was in a minor car accident earlier. Needless to say, it's friday and I only have two days left.

The problem is that I still have soooo much to pack!! I've tried getting rid of a lot of things. Whatever my friends didn't want was picked up by goodwill. Anybody have a packing system, or tips, or advice for how to organize my stuff into boxes? I'm pretty much done with the easy things (clothes, books, electronics, shoes). Its just all this stuff!! I feel hopeless. There's just no way that I'll be able to finish in time!

I know I'm ranting on. But this sucks! Why does everything always have to happen at once???

Ummm. This is what I do when I pack to move. I try to do ONE room at a time and complete that task and move on to the next. I always have a box or trash bag near me so as I pack I can throw away junk also. That helps narrow down how much you have to pack. Then I always end up with that one storage box full of stuff I want to keep but don't need. O.k. actually to large ruber maid containers I store in my boyfriends closet. Having a pilot for a bf, I move alot! I've moved already within this year from New Mexico to California to Florida. So I move alot. It sucks soo bad huh? I know the feeling sweetie! Sorry I hope my advice helps it's not much but it's all you really can do I guess.

flylady.net (or .com?) has good packing advice. Remember to keep the cleaning stuff handy.

The last time I moved I found the solution to this problem. I rented an 18ft truck and a full sized dumpster, which I parked right next to each other in the driveway. Every article I brought out of the house forced a decision on the spot whether it went into the truck or the dumpster.

What kind of stuff are you talking about? Dishes? Collectibles? Other breakables? Photos, hanging art? I have moved WAY too many times and have gotten to the point I can pretty much pack all my stuff that needs to be packed in a day and a half.

If you have only two days to get your stuff out of the apartment, then I say just shove everything into a box. (Stuff thats not breakable of course) Don't worry about sorting it out now just get it out of there. You can sort out where it goes when you get to your new place. Good luck.

Thanks girls! I am getting rid of a lot of stuff. Also I have hired movers, but not packers. The movers are going to load the truck, drive the truck, and then carry all the stuff up to my four flight walk up apartment. I went to get some of those big plastic totes yesterday and checked out the website. Thanks again!!!

I would have responded earlier but I thought this was a thread about packing for road trips.

Anyhow, go get some paper plates, plastic untensils and cups for the kitchen so you can pack your dishes. You will need lots of newspaper, packing foam, bubble wrap and/or peanuts. as well as boxes and packing tape. Don't forget a sharpie marker. Clearly mark your boxes with a brief description of contents also in big letters WHAT ROOM IT IS GOING TO (the movers will put your boxes in the proper room)

Brew a pot of coffee or drink some red bull. I find starting in the kitchen is easist because it's usually more organized than say your bedroom. And once you get going you kinda get into a groove and you won't want to stop. And you have to speed pack so don't even worry about what will you eat on. That's why you need paper plates. Just keep a cooking pot and pan handy.

When you wrap your plates it is better for them to stand upright (like records) than to stack.

Save your towels, blankets, sheets to use as packing material to wrap around breakables (vases, collectibles etc)

You will eventually get to a point (maybe your there now) where you just start throwing shit into boxes and taping it up.

Remember that moving companies do not like boxes of certain sizes to weigh more than so many pounds. I don't remember what but surely the moving coordinator went over this with you. Keep that in mind when you resort to throwing everything into random boxes.
