Default A Dancer's Nightmare -Sprained Ankle

I am the most ungraceful girl ever. As luck would have it, I tripped down my porch stairs, rolled my ankle, and landed on top of it. So now I have badly sprained my ankle and am on crutches. My doctor told me that I should not return to dancing until my ankle feels healed. What really sucks is this same thing has happened to me before (same ankle too) and I was out of work for close to a month. But back then I hardly had any bills so I could comfortably take a month off. But now I have an astronomical amount of bills, and feel really stuck. Injuring yourself is like the suckiest thing about this job -you're basically screwed. Or well, I am. Funny thing is, my boss actually told me that I could still work! When I told him I was on crutches he said "so you could still work, some guys think crutches are sexy." Uh, yeah right. Our club is very very lax so we can dance barefoot if we like, which will be better for my ankle, and get me back to work quicker but I cant dance barefoot. I am only 5'0 and my heels give me some height and thin me out, so I absolutely need them. With Christmas next month and everything, this is just killer. What awful timing I have. I have some money in the bank but I was really trying so hard to save my cash for the future. If I take that money out, I'll feel even more discouraged. I really want to avoid that at all costs. The only bill I might be able to escape is my car payment, since I pay an extra monthly fee for "disability insurance," but even trying to get that to cover me right now is nearly impossible. The insurance people are having me go through SO much just to get this stupid insurance that I pay $17. extra dollars for every month! My doctor, the hospital, my boss, and myself have to fill out this huge form. It's like, is this insurance even worth it? This whole thing sucks and I'm up shit's creek! Have any of you girls ever sprained/broken anything, and what did you do? Did you still dance? Did you work somewhere else? How did you pay for your bills? I could really use some good advice right now. ???

I think you should rest, dont go in it will only make it worse, how would you even do a table dance on crutches,I suppose you could do a lap,but you would still need to use your foot. When I drink I have been known to fall, once I fell down a fell down the stairs at the end of the night and twisted my ankle,my knees were scraped to the bone,my knee didnt hurt until like 3 days latter,it woke me in the middle of the night,I went to have it xrayed the next day and they said it was fine,it felt broken though, but it felt like nothing had ever happened a day latter, maybe yours will too,I dont know what to tell you to do,ask a regular for money if you need it,good luck.

Thanks Micehelle. Actually, asking a regular might not be such a bad idea. I have a guy who won 5.5 million in lotto and he's my biggest regular and visits me once a week. Best customer I ever had, he does not expect anything but what I do for a job. But since our relationship is so professional, how would I ever ask him for the money? I feel embarassed. What do you say? "May I borrow/have/work for?...."

I have the worst luck for hurting myself. And its always the same foot as its weak from long distance running when I was younger (and dancing for a long time). Just the other night, I tripped over a guys beer bottle he had put on the stage, rolled my foot underneath me and broke my shoe. Now its really swollen and sore but I keep dancing on it but with it strapped up and wearing boots. I ice it everytime I come off stage. It wasn't a bad sprain, but the doctor also told me to stay off it for a few weeks. I just keep dancing though and one of my regulars books me for private dances and massages my foot

I sprained my ankle very badly almost 2 years ago. Bad news is, it probably won't feel quite right for several months to a year. Mine was still wierd almost a year later. I took about a week off and did nothing but lie around the house with my foot up, iced it, etc as doctor advised. He also gave me a [can't remember name] - ankle support thing made of two plastic pieces with gel inside and velcro straps that you strap onto either side of your ankle. I wore that thing all the time when I wasn't working and it helped alot.

Get an ankle support bandage sock - it looks like an ankle sock but it's thicker and stronger. You can wash them just like regular socks. I wore that to work instead of the other plastic thing. I didn't go on stage and was able to dance almost normally - lapdances - but I did have a bit of a limp when walking. Most customers didn't seem to notice. Wear boots on top of the ankle support sock, don't walk on it too much and you can probably work a couple nights a week. That's what I did. Couldn't stand to sit around for a whole 4 weeks! Just keep it elevated as much as possible - when you're sitting with customers, put your legs up on their laps. At home keep it up on the couch or on pillows or something. Ice for swelling.

Also about the suggestion of asking a high roller regular for money: Since you say he just won a 5.5mil lotto, I'm willing to bet he wouldn't have too much trouble parting with a few bucks to help tide you over! If you've got his number and it isn't unusual for you to call him, just ring him up and tell him what happened. He may make an offer but if not just straight out ask him if he could help you out. You may be surprised at his response.

Sorry to hear this happened to you - especially at this time of year! Hope you get better!

I may be a bit off topic (and do wish to you the best K) but does anyone else see how relatively everyday things like a sprained ankle can reek havoc with one lifeif one does not have a financial reserve (6 months) in place for security? This is a good idea whether you swing your rear or a hammer and is more directed at others rather than K. CYA, except at the club. (hehe)

And I hope your ankle is better K. The insurance is a great idea K, but it does take time to kick in.

Do not press on trying to come back too soon or you may end up making it worse. Once the worst is over in terms of pain and can move a little, see if you can adapt by coming back in a limited capacity, even if it is less $ rewarding and you are less active, and can only work less. The "damsel in distress" mode may work better than you think. Also do not rule out a temp job where you are sitting down and answering phones--something beats almost nothing and your looks may be a real plus. Your state employment office or an agency are only a phone call away and you can do that sitting down.
Get well K, good luck, and I hope it stops hurting like hades soon.

Kaiyla, funny this was my stage name for 7 years,When I got pregnant with my daughter,I kept in touch with one regular,I was lucky and had lots of money saved but didnt plan on using it as my ex was in the business and made lots of money,he new what I was use to and was going to give me nightly earnings to put away, well,he moved out when I was 6 months,my customer and I were talking ,he didnt know I had saved income,he was like what are you going to do ,for money, when he found out ex moved out,I was like I dont know,he was going to give me some, anyways he offered and I was like I will pay you back, but I actually never took it,I never saw him outside the club, just talked on the phone and I felt funny seeing him outside, plus being pregnant, but if you two talk on the phone, tell him about what happened and how you dont know how you will pay the bills and maybe he will offer. What bridgette said is a good idea, about going back ,maybe after a wwek of rest, wear the ankle wrap and boots, dont go on stage,I never do,so that wasnt a problem for me and try to get regulars to come in and sit in vip, work maybe 3 days, thats what I worked, put the money away and dont spend it,which you probably will do anyways, since you will be resting, good luck.

i would rest your ankle for as long as you can make it without going crazy over paying bills - than i would go back to work and just not do stage work...your club sounds pretty laid back which definitley works in your favor...if it was me i wouldn't hesitate to tell your regular what happened...i would almost bet that he will offer you help without you even having to ask...

good luck to you and i hope you have a quick recovery!

Hey Kaiyla, I posted about this a couple weeks ago. I broke my foot. Not even dancing, just while doing regular everyday type stuff. I'm out of work for at least 6 weeks if not more. It sux but I have a day job to bring some extra income and it's a desk job. So I prop my foot up all day and don't do any walking. As far as that goes that how I take care of my bills. I'm going to quit the club I'm currently working at and audition for a new one when my foot is healed. But it sux not being able to dance, I hope you ankle is better soon! And don't push yourself to get back up there [nono] unless it feels ok to you. We don't want any permanently injured dancers!

You guys are amazing. Thanks so much for your answers and support. I am definitely going to be able to get back to work faster than I thought with your suggestions. I never even considered boots and an ankle sock either. I will rest this ankle the best I can but I have to get back AsaP. I am comptemplating asking my boss about skipping stage. I dont think my club is THAT laid back, but it's worth a try. I wonder if the other girls would get angry with me for being exempt from stage. :-/ Anyhow, thanks so much for the advice. This helps immensely!

That's the problem with working at a job that requires physical mobility. It's always adviseable to have insurance as a precaution. Being that you know you are clumbsy you might want to start a fund as soon as you start earning again to anticipate such setbacks.
Otherwise try not to put pressure on that foot and have plenty of support for it.

sorry about your mishap.....i would'nt encourage you to go to work but if you choose to do so i think it would be best if you did lap dances only...and not walk around too much to irritate you foot

A temporary day job helps some but not enough if you have bills in proportion with your usual stripper earnings. I like the idea of calling up regulars and sitting with them in the vip room. Of course no stage for a while, I don't see how your manager could make you if he knows you are hurt!
