Default working too much vs. not enough

It's a fine line...what is the happy medium for you?

I work almost every night. I schedule myself for two nights off per week but hardly ever take them....never take both. Tonight I have a night off. I feel tired but part of me is like WORKWORKWORK since I have nothing better to do. I feel tremendous guilt for doing nothing. I have this thing about missing the big night...and it's Saturday! (which is kind of hard for me to do when I'm tired since thre is obviously a lot more going on)

And when I say tired, I don't mean I need more sleep. I mean my body is drained. I feel like scheduling a vacation soon just so I can enjoy all my hard work and I can't be tempted to go in anyway.

Good for you Em that you have a great work ethic and that will take you a long way in life.

But you also need to be able to learn to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

What good is the money if you never have any fun with it?

You're right, X. I keep trying to say that to myself.

But part of me is saying to myself this level of income is short-lived...so work hard now so I don't have to later. But damn, I'm human too, not just a dancing machine

Oh yeah baby, I have seen your pics and you are definitely a dancing machine. Just kidding.

I have worked 6 days a week for the last thirty years. Average about 50 1/2 weeks a year sometimes 52 weeks a year.

A few years ago I told myself I could be gone any minute. What was I waiting for it was time to enjoy life a bit.

Now I am not saying blow off work, or blow all your savings on a Ferrari or anything else stupid. But once a year it is not going to kill your financial future to take a week or two off and go on a nice vacation or something.

Those horny hoot owls will be there when you get back Emily. LOL

If you are saving money, investing and looking at your long term future and taking care of business then also take care of Emily, if you die at the age of 40 of overwork and stress what the hell future are you saving for?

    Hi Em,

When I work too much I don't make as much money. Actually I make the same amount of money, it just takes more time LOL.

My limit is about 5 days a week. I have gone on those oh-my-god-i-have-to-work sprees and worked twenty or thirty days straight. But then my earnings drop.

Do you have weekly earning goals? Perhaps you can do something nice for yourself and slack off a little when you meet them.

Also, I'm sure you can find something to do on your days off! What do you like to do? Most volunteer groups will let you just wander in and out without asking too many questions. There's usually a soup kitchen somewhere on a Sunday afternoon that you can show up and work at and leave feeling so much better!

Or just look around on the web for things you like doing. There are rock climbing clubs, poetry slams, book clubs, game nights, etc. Just find something that makes you happy and do it! :-)

I do have weekly earning goals. This is a little mental, but I tell myself if I don't earn $2000/week, I don't deserve a night off. It's not really punishment to work, but more like a reward to not work.

I normally meet this goal but then what happens is that I slack off once I meet it. I see what you're saying. I need a hobby (besides sitting in front of my computer!)

Emily I totally understand what you are saying. I work Thursday-Sautrday. I can't really work more because I go to school but it kind of sux that my social life is kinda shot due to me working every weekend. But since I work weekends I think that makes up for me taking the rest of the week off. If I miss a Saturday or Friday I do feel so guilty and paranoid. Even though if I was there working while I am drained and tired I would be a major bitch and not making any money and getting pissed seeing all the cheery happy strippers make all the cash. I think as dancers it is very important to take a weekend off every two months that is when I start feeling burnt out and after I take a weekend off I come back refreshed and make a whole crap load of money. Just keep remebering how important it is to look not tired, happy and energetic as a dancer it is as important as our apperance. Now it I can only remeber this in my moments of self doubt!!

I think 5 nights per week is enough. I generally work Monday-Friday or Tuesday-Saturday, and use one day to clean the house, do laundry, rest, etc. I use the other day to run errands, go out, whatever. Occasionally I can work 6 nights in a week, but not for more than one week, because if I repeat that, I wind up just earning the same in 6 nights as I would in 5. Tiredness definitely take its toll on the pocketbook in this biz!

I agree with Lena. If I work too much i get tired of the men, of the stage, of my coworkers... I get testy real fast, and it shows. My earnings drop.

I took this entire weekend off, but I know that when I go back next week, I'll make hella money cuz I'll be fresh, happy, energetic, and excited to be there.

I hate taking off work. It makes me nervous since I won't be going to the bank Monday morning with a fat wad of cash to deposit, but I have to keep in mind that breaks are good and necessary and WELL DESERVED!

thanks for the input guys....I'm glad I took last night off. I cleaned the house and had a friend come over to hang out for a bit. It was nice, but I was still thinking about the club.

I really do need a vacation. I want to do it around Thanksgiving time since it's slow at the club and there are some pretty good travel deals!

Em, you work enough to meet your needs ie. pay the bills , maintain your health, put away for the future. If you work too much you will burn yourself out. Give yourself a break now and then. It will allow yourself to return refreshed and invigorated.

God Bridgette you sound just like my wife! She "works" five days a week and then runs like a chicken with her head cut off taking care of the house, me and the critters on the weekend. I offer to help but I never do anything to suit her so she tells me to just sit down. LOL

Me on the other hand, when I walk out of work I am the worlds greatest relaxer. Watch a couple movies in a row, watch some boxing, play video games for about 5 hours or so, no problem! Now that is a day off, and then maybe sit outside and read a novel. Like I said I am the King of Relaxation!

I go to college and this summer I worked 6 days a week on my break. Bad idea. I wish I had worked 4-5 days and taken some much needed time off. By August I was exhausted! I began to dislike dancing, went in late a lot, became more irritable with customers, etc, etc.

I'm a workaholic too, so I understand the reasoning that you might as well go to work because even if it's a bad night, that is still $200-300 you wouldn;t have mad sitting at home. But, I find if I do take 2-3 days off, I make up the extra money in the energy and motivation I have when I do work.

I'm lazy. I work 2-3 nights a week. It's hard knowing what I might miss out on while I'm at work. Plus I have to drive to Daytona which is like an hour away and I don't get home till 5:30 am. But still I need to work atleast 4 nights a week to save money.

I am probably the laziest person on this handle. I set a weekly goal of $1,000. I am trying to get into work more often and up my goal to $1,500. Last week I only worked 3 days. I usually try to work 4 days. I think I will try doing a Tues - Sat week like Bridgette. That is a good idea.
    I am soooo lazy.

LNGU: I had a hard time getting myself to work a full schedule for a while. I had been used to working only 1-2 days a week to pay the bills through college, and working a little more in summer to save. But once I made myself go in and saw I could consistently make money, it was MUCH easier. Once you start making more, it's hard to give it up. That growing savings account balance statement sure looks pretty every month! What keeps me motivated is having a weekly savings goal rather than an earnings goal. That also helps me avoid overspending.

I don't think working too much is necessarily a bad thing as long as you take breaks whenever you feel you need them. I'm such a busy person and I love to dance so I work as much as I can. But I also work a day job and go to school, so the most nights I can work in a week is 3 sometimes 4 if I take time off my day job. But I'm so busy all the time my social life suffers too. But I love being busy so it doesn't bother me. I don't think there's a minute when I'm not supposed to be doing something.

My fav thing to do to unwind after a long day is play video games [joker] and take a long hot bath.
