    Default Movies About Dancing :)

Since there was a post about books about dancing, why not movies? I've seen the Player's Club, Striptease, Showgirls, and Dancing at the Blue Iguana.

I loved Dancing at the Blue Iguana! It was sad but I think it was more real than the rest of the movies I've seen.

    Anyone else got suggestions?!

I saw "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" the other day for the first time. It was VERY entertaining, but it just kind of sucked how all the dancers were portrayed in the most negative manners possible (Daryl Hannah's bombastically stupid pill-popping bimbo-character to Jennifer Tilly's psychotic self-destructive character, and wasn't there a dancer who was having an incestous relationship with her BROTHER? Real cute.) It's a shame that someone does not make a movie where the dancers education exceeds a fourth grade level. I suppose that'd just throw society way off kilter. No wonder why people have the stereotypes about us that they do. Movies like this just perpetuate the notion that we are all f*cked up, drug-abusing mindless airheads. I can't lie though, when this movie comes on I cant help but watch it! It's like a trainwreck, it makes you nauseous but for some sick reason you just cant change the channel

Yeah, we should make a movie/documentary called "The Girls of Stripperweb" or "Not All Strippers Are Crackwhores". I got dibs on Pamela Anderson playing my role! Not that I think I look like her (I wish) except for the blonde hair, big boobs thing.

That sounds like an awesome idea Kobi. If you ever seriously do it, I'm in.

I agree Dancing at the Blue Iguana was really good, I watch it constantly. It sucks that they portray all strippers as having fucked up lives. It goes with that whole beauty or brains but you can't have both.

Oh if we make a movie I get Angelina Jolie, I don't care if I don't look like her I got brown hair and big lips!

If you say "Night at the Blue Iguana "was negative think about "Showgirls". That's about as negative as all those cop movies like "Serpico".
I think "Flashdance " was a classic even though the character depictions were ridiculous. A construction boss who was unaware his employee was a go-go dancer let alone that he hired her. A dancer has an outbreak in the middle of the Jersey turnpike because she discovers her boss is actually helping to get her admission to the Joffrey. Break dancing at a ballet audition? Lastly her getting upset because her mentor dies and her girlfriend leaves a boyfriend for a rich sleezeball to work at a nude club. I liked the dancing but the story sucked.
I liked "Dirty Dancing" which was good dancing and a nice, more believable story.

Wow that's weird, I posted this thread in October 2003, that's seems like forever ago! Aww looking back, that's cool how I came back and I log on this morning and there's my old thread staring back at me. Speaking of disappearing acts, I wonder how Kobi is, I miss her.

Back on topic, I was watching the making of "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" and did you know the documentary follows Darryl Hannah visiting an actual strip club and hanging out and she based her character on this girl, Nikki, that worked there. Could you imagine being that girl Nikki and having Darryl Hannah's incredibly retarded bimbo character being based on you, and having Darryl announce that to America on the movie? I'd be so pissed. The girl Nikki wasn't nearly that stupid.

Besides that, that was probably *the* worst acted movie I have ever seen.

    Hey, check this out...

"Closer", with Natalie Portman, Jude Law, and Julia Roberts

"It isn't while you are watching Closer that you understand you are viewing a great movie it is hours afterwards. Once the dust has settled your mind begins to run through what you have just seen and begins to put together the pieces that were so delicately placed in front of you.

Nichols proves to be a fantastic director as he takes the wonderously written Marber script and spans years without a single written timeline on screen. This film is truly an actor's film as they are allowed to tell the story through their acting rather than with annoying voice over or on screen cues to the audience.

This is a thinking person's movie, and not a film for anyone in demand of action packed sequences or anyone that offends easily, because trust me, you will be offended if that is you.

For the rest of us, it is executed flawlessly, setting off opinions and emotions you may never thought would be accessed. In a movie that is so sexually charged it is amazing there isn't a single sex scene or an ounce of nudity, unless you count a look at Portman's bum. Limited to implied sexual activity and an unrelentless fervor for using every sexual position and escapade to be drawn out in full verbal description Closer is demanding appreciation for its script, its acting and its power to hold you captive."

Here's some stills, unfortunately no real dancing pictures...

    Here's a clip:

    http://www.thezreview.co.uk/comingsoon/c/closer.htm

And there's an interesting bit of dialogue in it:

"You women don't understand the territory...because you are the territory."

and the dancer replies "It's not a war."

    Hmmm, could be pretty good.

Some people didn't like "Striptease" with Demi Moore, but I like it more now that I've danced a while. (The book by Carl Hiassen was of course better.) Stripping wasn't the main subject, but it covered the mulicultural aspect of dancers, a dancer's desire to put on a show despite drunked f*cktards soliciting us like prostitutes, and also how some women end up dancing quite unexpectedly (loss of job, divorce, need to support children, etc.)

And it wasn't his best book, either, lol. I too was somewhat disappointed in the movie, but then I almost always am disappointed in cinematic adaptations.

It sure beat all those tacky B-movies about strippers, where there is always a loonytunes trying to kill them inhorrible ways.

"Sex=Death" is the message they love, and God forbid you show anyone stripping--especially if they then have sex--without killing them in horrible ways, if the movie is to be deemed acceptible by Blockbuster Videos. No porno or Playboy tapes there, just good clean family fun, like fucking Freddy with an ax.

I highly recommend seeing "Lady of Burlesque" released in 1943 and starring Barbara Stanwyck. It's based on "The G-String Murders," authored by the legendary Gypsy Rose Lee. We all need to see a film about dancers that doesn't treat them like dysfunctional and lazy sluts, but as real and complicated persons. Stripping has a dignified heritage and it's a tradition reaching back thousands of years. Take pride.
