    Default Questions about learning polework

I have just got hired at a classy topless club. It is a very picky club. They loved my dancing style and my look. They hired me for days so that I can learn polework.
Mainly, the features or best dancers get to work at night. I would like to learn so I can work at night.
Does anybody have any advice or know where to find resources on poletricks or excercises that could help with learning poletricks?
Are there any "beginner" poletricks that aren't too hard? I'm working on building up my arm strength and getting my legs back into shape because I haven't danced for 9 months-due to pregnancy.

The easiest trick to get used to the pole, I have found when trying to help newbies, is to hook your right knee around the pole as high as possible, so that your calf and foot are pointing straight behind you. Grasp the pole with your right hand while keeping your arm as straight as possible. Your head should be as far away from the pole as it can be, now. You can now pretty much fall forward naturally into a spin around the pole. If you practice this a few times you can brace your other leg against the one hooked on the pole mid-spin for better control and a longer spin. It is a fairly basic, easy trick, but will give you a good feel for the dynamics. It is also the easiest trick to look good with when starting.

It's all leverage. The body strength is helpful, but a good feel for ways to brace yourself, etc., will do you far more good. Hopefully this club you are working in will encourage dancers to play and experiment on the pole when it is slow, this is the best way to learn, and most guys, except the very jaded, will find it fascinating to observe the learning process.

There are some great instructional videos, I have heard, but i have never seen any--some of the dancers here have mentioned them and I'm sure they can help you with finding some.

I highly recommend you try this pole work instructional video:

to be perfectly honest the rest of the instructional tapes are for really green first timers
and a waste of money imho..
BUT the pole trick tape is 5 stars!!!!

    Djoser is right,
i was a pole dancer many many years. The first thing about the pole, is alot of dancers are afraid of it. Start very simple, let your hands get the feel for the pole. Go up and down with your hands getting used to the grip. These are not club moves, but teaching you to get used to the feel and grip. Then when you know you can hold on to the pole from the front, do it from behind. Go up and down slowly, different feel!
Add a leg up, only as comfortable as you are with one hand holding the pole. Now with your leg kinda wrap it lose around the pole (hang on) get dizzy stop, put your head back and swing slowly with your one foot on the ground.
These are steps for you get over the "i can't never do that crap". Alot of girls can't hang from a pole, because they never learned how to develope an understanding of it. I love them. And fell. Banged my head many times, you can hurt yourself....Easily. GO it sow with practice. Hands, leg, one hand, one leg, twirl! That is the start of getting over the fear, and making your grips easy. Your legs, as you learn are going to be the ones that will make you or let you fall. I always used legs. If i felt slipping, i wraped a leg or two real quick for leverage.
    Good luck. Pamela
Then you will feel it is time to move on to harder pole tricks! As a newbie, put mats if you can around the pole, when you start to climb the first few times, or have some one "spot" you.

IMO Fawnia's tape is for beginners but it's still good anyway.
Don't forget abdominals in your workout as well. The majority of the time you will be using your legs to keep you up. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, I will definately get the tape and practice alot. I know it won't all happen over night so I don't expect to be that good starting out. LOL! You've all got some great tips and advice. I totally appreciate it. I will work hard at it.
Ya know it's funny I used to be good at swinging and hanging from poles when I was in elementary school and loved it. I miss that thrill that i used to get and would like to get it back. I got lazy though in my teen years and stayed that way for quite a few years. Oops sorry for rambling. Thanks again everyone

one trick I learned that I really like and can even do now even though Ic ouldnt' do any of my other tricks right now(not strong enough and pregnant) is this one

take hold of the pole with you rright hand take a big step away from the pole with your right foot then take a step toward the pole with your left foot(adding momentem whle doing this) and spinyour body around while swithing hands that aregrasping ht epole..... you can either do a little spin or you can lift the fot thats away from the pole as far as it can go in the air and then slide down the pole so that you end up on your knees... I wonder if I explained that right.... this girl used to do that move all the time to that song that goes let the body hit the floor, and it looked amazing.

also I used to do a simple pole flip(taught me how to climb and gave me strength)

jump onto the pole as high as you can by grasping it with two hand and locking your feet, once you are grasped ont here tight with your arms(you have to have arm muscle for this) seperate you legs and wrap them around the poleinto the pike position(legs straight) and then bend backward your thighs will hold you on and you reach for the ground... then you can flip over or slide to the ground... it may not be the most graceful move ever but it will help you learn how to climb the pole, and how to hold yourelfonto the pole

When my club opens it's usually slow for about an hour, so I've gone over to the stage and helped myself. The DJ and bouncer get a kick out of it! Some of the girls who know polework won't help me learn, but others will. One girl in particular is really being super helpful... I'd rather learn from her any day than the snotty ones!

Wearing boots helps to climb up. Although I can do it in my regular stripper heels, boots stick to the pole.

Oh no Crystal. I didn't read your post until now. The DVD is already out now but ironically its not available in the states. Go to www.mypole.co.uk
Its cheaper than getting it elsewhere and it shippes really quicly even though its from the Uk. I know, I bought a few things from there.

The Fawnia video is OK, it shows you all the moves very clearly and step by step, but it doesn't have any really "fancy" or "complicated" tricks. I bought some Polympics videos off the Deja Vu website (all VHS) which are actually pretty cheap ($6.95 each I think plus some ridiculous amount for shipping/handling - $5.99?). The downside to those is that you are watching shows that are sometimes poorly lit with distracting camera flashes and editing that sometimes doesn't allow you to see how someone begins or ends a trick. Obviously, these are not instructional how-to videos but you get to see girls that are amazing on the pole and you can get some great ideas. I picked out the stuff I was interested in trying and did the whole slow-mo and pause thing and made little sketches with descriptions to take to work and practice. That has worked pretty well for me so far.

Does anyone have any ideas on pain tolerance (don't know how else to put it)? When I first start practicing a particular trick I get bruises in certain areas but with time, I don't get the bruises any more. However, I've tried hanging from the pole with only one leg (pole touching the thigh and calf) and cannot seem to do it without extreme pain and giant 6" bruises.

Anais, I would say just keep looking on ebay. The video is on there fairly regularly from what I can tell. If you desperately need it, I have it and you could possibly send me a few bucks to copy it for you.

Tampopo, pain tolerance is individual for all of us. I find the more I practice ,the less it and the bruising will occur.
Angelina, they now call the polympics ,the pole antics. The deja vu site now requires membership but you can still purchase the videos from the magazine ads.

Angelina- just go to commerce.dejavu.com, scroll down to "Video Blowout" and click on "More Videos". On the first page, they have a video called "Exotic Pole Dancers" which I tried to order 4 months ago and they told me it was no longer available, so I don't know what the deal is with that. But be sure to scroll to the bottom of that page and click on "next" because most of the Polympics videos are on the second page. They don't have the Fawnia video, if that is what you were referring to. My dancer friend has 2 VCRs so send me a message if that is what you want.

Dreamer-Yeah, I don't know why that particular hanging trick hurts so much more than the others. I guess I should just keep at it, though I'm not sure it's really worth that much pain.

My sister is much more experienced at dancing than I and she and I went to a playground (at night when the kiddies had gone home) to practice. I find that if I get "into" the dance, I will do tricks that I can't reproduce if I try to do them step by step.

I bought Fawnia's videos when I first started out dancing. They were ok but I feel the best way to learn is from another dancer. That way you can get personal attention and advice. Talk to the girls you see doing pole tricks. Ask around usually there are a few girl willing to help. Ask them to come in early when the club is not open to show you how. Or go in early by yourself to practice. Be patient it takes time to learn. You can also have a pole at home to practice on. Here's a site to get them from: www.platinumstages.com They're a little pricey so I would stick with using the ones at your club. Go Luck!!!

I just got my stage a few months ago from Platinum Stages! With some negotiating the customer service emailers might offer a bit of a discount from the site prices.

I have to say: It was *pricey*, but a ton of fun! And helps build curage and familiarity with the pole. A couple songs on my stage before going to work really helps warm me up for the night, instead of being really stiff my first time up.

? -- Your first time up for the night, do you sometimes draw a total BLANK on your tricks? LOL! I do all the time, so once around on the stage is mandatory.

FYI, the stage is about $400.00 total, best for apartments since its free standing. It hold up to 250lbs so you can do all your crazy tricks on it. *thumbs up*

    Akajules sooo agree!

Boots do come in handy when you need to grip and hang, as well as stage crawling!

But watching, another and trying that move is the best way..really.

You can watch someone ride a horse all day, it will only give very basics....you need to jump on!

best thing to learn when you want to climb the pole is to wear patent shoes and use the front of your foot to grip the pole (they stick)
if you want to hang upside down, jump up as high as you can on the pole and cross your legs around it tightly (one leg over the other) then just let go and you'll stay there.

    Hi Ladies,

I have read this with interest just because I am always amazed at how brave you all are to do those pole tricks. I would be in the emergency room if I tried something like that.

I have what may be a dumb question. When you do those tricks you are putting total faith in the fact that the pole is installed correctly. Has anyone ever had the pole come loose and crash down with them on it? I Just wondered.
Anyone with a memory should be very humble.

I don't know if it's happened but the club would be in a hefty lawsuit if it did.

I have never heard of this happening, it probably has, somewhere, somehow.

I do know that the first time I tried what should have been a trick that is perfectly safe, on a stainless steel pole, I nearly cracked my skull on the stage! You gotta be careful on those damned things! Very slippery.
