    Default just wondering

Hi I'm a dancer in upstate NY Ive been dancing for 5 yrs.
In the past 2yrs I've noticed money going down hill. Lately more then ever this time of year used to be bangin. I was just wondering if its like this all over or just in upstate NY and if i should try traveling elsewhere. Also any suggestions on where to go? Thanks

Yep it's like that everywhere. Money is down for everyone, or at least it's harder to make it. Guys just aren't spending like they used to, they don't have the extra cash and if they do they expect alot more 'attention' for the same dollar. A FEW places have been able to keep business relatively up, but very few and that seems to be pretty shaky too.

Yes, that is true. Money is not what it used to be. i have noticed a decline in every city I have worked in. I am having less $500 nights than I am used to. The economy sucks everywhere and this business reflects it. It is getting more and more expensive for the average person to survive. We are only one industry, and what we get depends on what everyone else is making. I hate it, but i refuse to let up on my dignity.

I know it's so cliche to blame everything on the media; but I believe that because of the overflow of stripper related TV programmes, it's made strip clubs less taboo. I think that is one of the major factors in our money loss

You very well may be right, Naomi. All the glitz related to being a dancer has encouraged new girls to jump on the bandwagon. I was actually inspired to get into the business a little more hardcore after seeing that special that came on HBO a few years back. I forgot the name of it, but I do remember a girl named Ginger on it. And now there are shows like The Family Business. The list goes on.

Yeah, the HBO show was called G-String Divas, and I actually named myself after Ginger as my first stage name, hehe.
Anyway, I live in Western NY and it sucks just as bad here. Right now I am mainly making money from my regular customers, but there are just SO many girls who want a piece of the pie when there isn't all that much to go around. I have only been dancing for a couple years, but I hear so many of the veteran dancers always say that they used to be making SO much more than they are making now. So I think business is pretty much down everywhere. :-/

Well, every strip club, restaurant, and other business in New York State will be no-smoking as of July 24th - a week from thursday. If you think things are bad now, just wait!

Also, I'm not sure where in Upstate NY you're from, but about every upstate city except Binghamton and Buffalo have manufacturing economies which have been hard hit by bad economic times. Also, of the upstate cities only Binghamton and Buffalo have clubs that qualify as "upscale show clubs". Of course Buffalo clubs get killed because of the restrictive city ordinance and the fact that Canadian clubs offer nudity plus alcohol plus heavy contact a 15 minute drive away.

There are lots of upstate NY clubs where it is very possible to earn LOTS of money, and you don't need to be a '9' or a '10' either to get hired in most of them. But what you do need to do in these clubs is quite a bit beyond just dancing.

If this is true, that strip clubs and strippers are more accepted by the main stream, I would think this would be more business for the dancers?

    But maybe not.

Personally, I think it is just the overall downturn in the economy and the mood of the country. Customers don't have as much discretionary income as they did in the late 90's and 911 has caused a lot of people to prioritize things a little differently i.e., customers are less hedonistic than they were a few years ago.

The pendulum will swing back in the other direction at some point, but it’s a matter of when, and I don’t really have an answer for that.

More cops patrolling near all types of drinking places has scared of a lot of bar patrons nowadays too. Coupled with city after city passing ordinances eliminating nudity and the contact from the dances. Nothing can cut off the flow of dollars faster than a look but not touch law. And many guys feel that going to a club has gotten too expensive now and have a lot of remorse the next morning for blowing a chunk of money on a girl that they didn't fuck or can't date.

This business is boring to guys now. The excitement is gone. And the employers of the major league athletes and coaches and other high profile workers have given instructions to stay out of strip clubs due to all the scandals that have unfolded over the past several years. And the majority of the VIP and Champagne room visits used to be funded by corporate expense accounts. Corporations aren't footing the bill anymore.

In one city I worked in about a decade ago,one club was closed for the night because the mayor was having a party there. You won't see a politician do that anymore in the near future.

The pool of money customers has shrunk considerably, and the average guy is more cautious about his money nowadays. Department store spending is way down too.

Melonie mentioned in one of her posts that a girl who is able needs to travel around in hopes of finding clubs that offer the greatest earning potential. In other words, if you are working 5 nights a week now and averaging after tip outs $700, and you find a club or 2 where you can average $1200 per week in 5 nights even though maybe 5 nights was worth $1800 in the past, you have done well.

I don't think anyone on this board has bought a new BMW in cash off her last 3 months earnings or a new Louis Vuitton purse and matching wallet off her last 2 nights earnings as was common 5 or 6 years ago.

There are more ladies in the industry than before, younger, with no concept of "dancer courtesy...EVEN THE WAITRESSES! So "old school" girls have to learn new tricks and get more aggressive than before, something we do not like to do, it goes against our "customer service" policy on how to preform and treat the customers. The economy sucks every where. We are at an economic phase where you have to "push a string" to phrase it in economic terms. It will even out and the string will pull again, it's the natural cycle of economic...high point, decline, recession, growth, high point, ect. We are in a full fledged recession right now, so on an up note, things can only get better

BTW, Denver is ok, not what it used to be even before lap dancing, and a lot more girls in the clubs, but at the worst we are still pulling at BARE minimum 100 a night, ( A good night here now is 300 & up)which is sucky, but it adds up in the end :-/

In point of fact, averaging $1000 gross for a five night week only adds up if A) $300 or so isn't collected in income taxes due, B) you don't have to purchase private medical insurance and you don't develop any expensive medical problems, and C) you don't look down the road very far to see the impact that continuing to dance will have on "straight job" earnings potential and "straight job" retirement benefits by not building service and by not having contributions made in your behalf to retirement funds and SSI.

Basically, if a dancer is grossing $1000 for a 5 night week, she's actually money ahead with a $10 an hour straight job with medical insurance, retirement benefits, and the opportunity for promotion after working there a couple of years.

    Melonie is right,
ladies you need to have that day job as well these days! You will be covered in alot of areas.

When you stop dancing, you still have your other job to keep you moving along.

Dancing is great! But you have got to think ahead while dancing. School. Or if you already have a degree or skills in a certain field, take it!

    It's insurance. It does work.

If you want to blame TV for the decline of strip club popularity that I feel you need to look deeper into those educational program's like Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones. They regularly get stripper's or wannabe stripper's to grab there 15 minute's of fame making our industry out to be a trailer trash, under educated laughing stock's. They used to call me from Jerry Springer about once every 2 month's wanting me to send them girl's. I told them point blank, "if I had any dirt laundry , which I don't , I sure as hell wouldn't air it on national TV for the world to see and ruin my good name. Stop calling your wasting your time here!!"

That is exactly what I was talking about.

If folks think that the clubs are full of dancers like those featured on Jenny Jones and Senator Springer's show, then no wonder they want to stay out of the clubs! (My apologies if any of YOU were on those shows--I am sure you are different.)

I did the Jenny Jones show - once! After the rotten treatment I received (they insisted I play the part of a semi drug crazed dumb blonde bimbo slut or I could buy my own plane ticket back home) I have turned down several later offers. TV has an agenda of its own, and intelligent responsible drug free entrepreneurial exotic dancers do not fit with that agenda.
