    Default Robitussin, a drug?

    Ok here goes,
I asked one of my coworkers what was wrong with her. For the past couple of months she's been off. It's as if she's in her own world, she has a glazed look in her eyes and has an indifference about her.

This girl normally has high anxiety and always seems panic stricken. She is a very sweet girl.

Now she's all calm, but a little too calm if that makes sense.

She tells me that she takes Robitussin before work for her anxiety, and she feels more focused at work...Robitussin is for cough and congestion...She says she takes a little more than half the bottle... :o

I'm worried about her, is this dangerous, is there long term side effects? This girl is so straight i'm afraid for her.

You bet she is harming herself. It is a drug! It is a cough suppressant which in turn is supposed to stop one from coughing. If she gets a cold for example and gets congested, she needs to cough and move the phlem up and out of her throat and lungs. Very important.

Many people grab cough suppressants to stop a cough, and end up with bronchitis and even pneumonia! She needs to cough.

As far as getting high, and that is what she is doing. Lots of people abuse cough medicine, usually the syrup. It's a downer. "Dmx" for short, is found in MANY over the counter cough medicines. And is a narcotic. And can behave very badly in the body. She can eventually hallucinate, and more in given time. It is easily addicted, the body will want more.
I am sure you can find more info. online, or call local "ask a nurse" in your area. That is what i do no about cough medicines. Hope you find out more. Pamela

I found this information through a site who's link I've posted here, it's quite informative when looking into street drug's commonly used today.
DXM is short for Dextromethorphan. In small amounts its a very effective cough suppressant, but in large amounts it is a very powerful dissociative drug. This can be found in many over-the-counter cough medicines, and the psychedelic effects begin somewhere over 120mg, but becomes toxic around 20-30 mg/kg. This drug has been used for recreational purposes for around 30 years. When taken recreationally the "trip" usually lasts around 5-6 hours. Thats including the come-up, peak and come-down. Also, most people who take it expirence an "afterglow" the next day which is the slight after-effects of the drug. The feeling of an afterglow is hard to explain, because you can usually definately tell its there, and yet you can usually do everything normally, and its hardly noticable. The afterglow isnt usually very strong but can vary on the person's metabolism, and their dosage and weight. This drug is mildly addictive, but usually only mentally. Some users say it can become physically addictive after prolonged daily/semi-daily use.

I've been searching myself. I'm afraid that it'll destroy brain cells or something along those lines after prolonged use. She's a book worm so i'm sure if I found information of the sort she would definitely quit.

Her answer was "girl please it's cough medicine, I only do it three nights a week and I've lost weight. It's not like I'm doing cocaine or anything."

Maybe it'll take a major hallucination to get her to stop. I just pray she's not driving when it happens.

Brandi try telling her that you know she is "not" a drug addict, but that she is abusing the stuff. Tell her you bring it up because you care about her health. Long term, any med. will mess with the body. Even an asprin a day to keep blood thin that so many people use can mask the early stage of aneurysm, by blocking the pain that starts (headache), before the pain gets very bad, by then the damage is done.

Cough medicine is serious business, one too often abused. Many things can happen to her.

What would work better for her, and under a doctors care, is to get on an anti- anxiety medication. At least these meds. are made to calm you down, and some people actually "live " all thier lives on Xanax for example. Much safer monitored by a doctors care. Self medicating can be bad business as it is, but she is abusing.
Good luck, PS Xanax, is the cheapest med. prescribed, and one of the most prescribed, for anxiety. Of course all drugs have thier own side effects.

The last part of the word is tussin. Okay ever heard of people drinking TussinX to get a buzz. On the street its referred to as "syrup" a la the rap song "sippin on sy-zrup". It is a drug and a very powerful one. She is lucky nobody has hipped her to TussinX yet or she'd be way more faded than she is now, and TussinX, the yellow kind, even makes people itch as a side effect. Tussinx comes in red and yellow. It has hydrocodone, narcotic derivative of codeine in it, and an antihistamine that dries up mucuous membranes.
Also, there is another cough suppresant drug being used called Purple. Purple is along the lines of tussin x but the chemical formulation is slightly different. Purple, promethazine, usually always has narcotic codeine and not detivatives of codeine in it. It is the real deal. It also is in syrup form, and both of these drugs when mixed with alcohol can get a person faded and jaded out of their mind.
If you have ever seen some1 get high and drink a lot at the same time, that really faded floaty glassy look that people get, she will begin to have it if she ever drinks anything, even a beer, while on that stuff. The bad thing is that she may be building up at tolerance for that and move on to other stronger drugs or forms of oral suspension abuse like the ones that I mentioned. Try to give her some help if she wants it.

divyne and pamela are both right...used to work in pharmacy and the c2/3 (controled) cough syrups are the most widely abused things ive ever seen. vicodin is easier to catch people abusing but tussnix has more of the drug...or...cough syrups have a ton of alcohol maybe she has a low tolerance and is getting loaded to calm down, plus all the sudafed that is there will make anyone loopy. either way she is using something for a purpose it is not designed for...

night..which kid rock was that on? bring th pain?

I agree with Pamela, that she would be so much better off taking an anti-anxiety drug for anxiety. I take the generic version of Xanax which is very inexpensive and effective. I don't take it every day, just when I need it. No side effects for me.
