While very many streetwalkers are addicts, and there area fair number of "escorts" who are addicts, the most successful ones aren't. Most people i know who sell sex are not additcts but I think if you group all the sex workers together (from street walkers to "escorts" more than half would have an addiction. The top escorts are the ones who tend to save up to invest in real estate and a retirement fund while the low end street walkers tend to be drugged up on heroine, coke, and booze . Its really a shame to be a prostitute and have nothing to show for it in the long run.

I read a study (I think it was in a book called Sex Work) that said that like 85% of streetwalkers were on drugs, and 15% of call girls were on drugs.

I highly agree with Lena. Call girls live a lavish life style, and drive expensive cars, at least thats the norm for a call girl.
The street walkers look for Johns, and in exchange for a hj, bj or flat out intercourse for money, or better yet drugs the man may already have on him.
And to answer SuperStripper, NO. Most addicts are not prostitutes.

From what I know, which isn't much personally but rather from reading and what I've seen on TV, most of the prostitues on the street are drug addicts but the ones that are escorts or call girls aren't.

    Default Maybe a little bit

I voted "No", but after thinking about it a little more, I think some call girls could be adicted to something else besides drugs. Streetwalkers do it because they are desperate, but I have to think that once a classy call girls gets a taste of a $1000 afternoon date, she never looks back and becomes adicted to the lifestyle.

If she likes sex, is pretty, and very careful, she can make more money than most men do and have lots of spare time.

there's upscale and there's downscale, whether you're talking dance clubs or prostitutes. In upscale settings you find businesswomen who have their s#!t together for the most part. In downscale settings you tend to find drugs, violence, and personal tragedy.

I voted no, but I'm not 100% sure. Just seemd like it was better not to pigeon hole them into being crack whores or something.

I have always thought prostitution should be legal though. Why should the government be in control of who is having sex? It's personal choice. It should be taxed like any other job. And the Johns should use condoms.

Most of you who have posted so far seem to feel that escorts are probably not addicts- what brings you to that conclusion ?
Well, I think this is speculation for most of us. I don't know any streetwalkers and I've only known 1 escort. She had a regular clientele, I'd never seen her drink or drug. I think it would be unreasonable for us to believe that call girls don't indulge, but they seem less likely to be addicted to drugs (which is what I assumed the poll was referring to)

    Tigerlilly,

There have been several studies to that effect. One guy set out to prove that call girls are performing "emotional labor" while street girls are simply providing sex. He surveyed a bunch of call girls and a bunch of street hookers about things like drug use, client drug use, conversation before/after, cuddling before/after, location, length of relationship with customers, etc. The book was called Sex Work.

I think the ones who dont want to be in the business, but are, probably do drugs so that they can get the 'out of body feeling' while they are with clients..

We do know there are wome who sleep with men for car payments, rent etc. And not drugs. Percentage...Changes from year to year i am sure. Last years percentage may have been very low, this year all time high amoung prostitutes.
I can tell you all one thing, MEN (women too, i can't exclude them), in high positions all around the USA indulge. (no not all).
I think i once had some information that our Judges, Lawyers Doctors, etc. Where amoung"one" the highest group users. Would still like to see if that can be hunt up perhaps on the web. These people have easy acess to it (doctors), and the others can freely buy at a hefty price.
Addicts? Umm, not sure about that, just said users, could be a one time hit. Whe you say addict, that is someone who is addicted to drugs, there for has to have them. High among the population then is very simple to see, because they get busted on the streets and clubs etc.
Others who are "professionals", use at home every night. Don't forget alcoholics, they are rampant! And alcholol is a drug.
Another guess by sooo many who drink every night to calm their nerves, get that buzz, thats abusing. Alcoholics are a very high percentage of users. (thier drug of choice is drink).

    Pamela speaks Truth.

Quite often the surveys and research deal only with narcotics, and don't include addiction to alcohol into their equations. Being addicted to alcohol, although more rampant among the general public than drugs, is overlooked since alcohol is legally purchased. I do not recall numbers, but I do recall that the numbers for those who become hooked on hard drugs who started with an alcohol problem was staggering. Additionally, a lot of the home life abuse that forces on into the streets, where they developed their additions, also stems from the abuse of alcohol.

Since drugs are illegal, if you ask someone anonymously if they are addicted, you probably will get a more or less truthful answer, because they know they are doing something illegal. Many alcohol addicts deny that they have a problem, because they do not get arrested for buying alcohol (thus the immediate indication of their problem is not there). Few would truthfully think and even admit in anonymity that they are addicted to it.

Well, here's a page from the annals of people I've known and loved...

I had a beautiful girl friend once (looked like a cross between Grace Kelly and Gwynyth Paltrow) who after many misadventures I found was first, addicted to Heroin. Ok, so I was supportive and optimistic in re: to recovery. Then circumstances revealed that she was meeting men in hotel rooms for $20 tricks. After this, I found out she wasn't the only one of my pretty and well educated friends; I found *several* girls who were part of a ring chiding each other on to provide sexual favors for drugs or money for drugs. The conversations I had with them led me to believe that they were actually seeking a certain amount of degredation from their situations. It was upsetting and mind-blowing. I asked the before-mentioned friend why she didn't sign up with an agency for what she was worth (remember, she was stunningly beautiful) or dance and she couldn't fathom it. For the record, she and the other girls I mention had at least some history of childhood sexual abuse that they dwelled on.

On the other end of the spectrum, another beautiful blonde I knew started as a dancer who occasionally did private shows, moved on to a high end escort service and is now a very successful dominatrix. She doesn't do drugs to excess or, in fact, often at all. She is extrememly business minded and makes *tons* of money. The girls who I have known who have worked at the cathouses seem to follow this trend also, but I have only known a few of those girls. That doesn't mean that they are totally abstemious by any means, but they know when they need to keep their heads on straight and therefore do not indulge to excess when they cannot afford to.

So, I would say that in my experience, the drive to be successful, supercedes the destructive (or at least chemically destructive) drive. You move up the ladder or you don't. But I have to say that the impairing chemical addictions seem to keep to the lower-end of prostitution... from what I have seen.

In regards to this being a stereotype, I think the wrongful assumption that general society makes about the connection between drug use and prostitution (or any kind of sex work), is that the sex work is the irrefutable "destructive component" in the equation. In other words, clean girl become sex worker and BECAUSE she became a sex worker, she eventually becomes a drug addict.

In truth whether you're talking about prostitutes or dancers, you have basically three different categories.

a.) Girls that start clean and have the smarts to stay clean.
b.) Girls that start clean, let the money and attention go to their heads, and then proceed to start using drugs when the 'glamour' of the job has worn off.
c.) Girls that were messed up to begin with and merely use the money that they earn dancing/hooking to further their destruction.

Another mistake that general society makes is failing to realize that these three categories apply to ANY profession where you have people who are:

    - often young and naive
    - are making a lot of money, but don't have a lot of
    experience in managing it
    - may be poorly educated
    - may not have had the best moral upbringing

Just as we have 'lifestyle' dancers, we have 'lifestyle' athletes, 'lifestyle' actors, etc. For all the stereotypes abound regarding sex workers, these sort of things can happen to everyone. Hence in truth, sex work per se is NOT a destructive component.

Nightrider_NIN, I don't know, but from watching all of the "E! True Hollywood Story" and Entertainment Tonight specials, it seems to be so! Lol, They make it seem like ALL movie stars have a problem with drugs at some point in their career. I guess that's what gets ratings, though.

Seems the question is turning some. There is an addict, or recovered addict in just about every profession we can think of.
Ranging from homeless straight up to the very wealthy and well known.
Sad but true. We could beat this topic to death because movies stars are well known for their "addictions" as well as our homeless around town.
