Default A wanna-bee who got turned away

Hello ladies. For the longest time now, I've read and studied everyones experiences. Finally, on Monday, one of my best friends (former dancer) took me out to some clubs so that I could finally do some real research. I was sooo nervous. On our way there, I got a splitting headache from all the stress. The first club we went to was called Christies Cabaret (in Cleveland). As soon as we walked in, I talked to the I guess hostess and she was about to give me an application before the manager was like," well I dont' want to waste your time, but you're just not what I'm looking for at the present time." It really hurt me and my friends feelings, but I didnt' let it get me down.

The next club I went to (Monroe's) was more of a neighborhood club full of black and latino clientele. It was decent inside, but it's not the place for me.
The third club we went to was called Hydra. I really really liked this club. Since it was Monday, it was really empty, but I still liked the atmosphere. One of the bouncers told me that they are under new management, I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing.

How many more times do you ladies think that I should go to check out Hydra, or should I look at a few others? Also, I know what I should wear, but I dont' know where to get an outfit and shoes to dance in. Thanx again for everyone who's left me private messages giving me their thoughts and ideas.

For me when I first started out, I know my comfort level was very important, so I chose a club that I liked, and felt comfortable being in. When you are comfortable, learning the way things work comes easier, then you start making money.

If you felt comfortable there, its a good place to at least start out.

Very true. Look for a club that has a good atmosphere and makes you feel comfortable. Even if you're told you'll make lots of money, you really want a club where you feel at home. You'll make WAY more money if you're happy and you like the club you work at. Good luck. I hope it turns out well for you.

Being a newbie, I'd go to a club twice before asking about working - once on a weekday and once on a weekend. That will give you a better picture of what the club is like. But no matter how much visiting you do, you can't really know if it's for you until you go for it and start working there. Also, if there are a few other clubs, it wouldn't hurt to check as many out as possible. Your dancer friend can help you with info about the local clubs, but it's always best to see for yourself, since your style and what your comfortable with won't necessarily be the same as your friend's. Finally, sometimes club managers at some of the more upscale places aren't interested in newbies - and they can normally tell just by looking at you. Don't worry about being turned down at one place - maybe you'll have to get your feet wet at a club that's not exactly your first choice, but then you can gain experience and move on to clubs you like better quickly. Good luck!

Cinnamon, you did exactly the right thing by not taking Christie's Cabaret's statements personally. For a fact the economy is bad all over right now, and Christies is an upscale club. This probably means that Christies has a stack of applications already from area dancers working in other clubs with lower earning potential. This puts Christies management in the 'driver's seat' as far as being able to pick and choose one girl out of 10 applicants. If a dancer is inexperienced, she would virtually have to be a perfect 10 to get a positive reaction from club management under current business conditions. Even if a dancer has a couple of years of experience, there are also likely to be other girls with similar experience in that stack of applications who the management thinks are prettier, better built, better money earners etc.

    Oh YECH, Cinammon!!!

I'd ditto what Melonie said about not taking it very personally. When I worked at Tiffany's in Phoenix, we'd get a FLOOD of girls applying at the start of the school year. A LOT of these girls would have been great dancers in other clubs (and, in fact, lots of them did get hired elsewhere) but simply didn't fit in with what Tiffany's was after. Often, it wasn't ONE consistent look, but a VARIETY of looks. For 'zample, I'm blond and have that sort of schoolgirl look (play along, folks.... ) ANYWAY, when September hit, DOZENS of girls who looked like me would apply. But, even though "Suzi Sorority" sells pretty well, you don't want an entire club FULL of girls who look like me, or you chase off the customer who is looking for Tyra Banks. Get it?
