Great question. I know there is a site called Strippersuccesssecrets.com where you can buy one for around $30-$40. does anyone know if it's worth it?
It's better to be looked over, than overlooked.

Hey, Bambi, I lived in a house right down the street from Lollipops and we had a pole in our living room, so after a while, I just had to try it. I actually got so I could do one trick I have never seen anyone else, male or female, do--it's not sexy like you ladies do it, more like a gymnastic trick.
It had been a while since I moved out--today I was filling in for a sick DJ at a club, and since at one point it was totally dead, I had to see if I could still do it. Well, I would rather have had a bunch of big-spenders in the house (day shifts suck!), but at least I haven't lost my touch, LOL.
The best way to learn (other than having a pole in your house), which won't really work for you at Lollipops because it's always busy, is to practice at the beginning of the night. I worked in a smaller club where we did this a lot, until the guys started coming in, and it was also great for morale.
Instead of moping around waiting, I would show them some tricks and we'd all have a ball learning. Then when the guys came in I would jump right down and they would see a whole bunch of dancers already getting crazy onstage--a great way to start the real night!
Pamela has practiced at the playground, too--a great way to learn, and I have even done them on street signs. I have been sorely tempted to do one on the canopy poles at the Oyster Pub, but I don't want them to get mad!
I don't know if you are working tonight, but a wealthy friend of mine is here from Vegas and I am taking him to Lollipops. I will ask for you but if you read this first, don't hustle him for a dance, I think he is used to extras, and he might be a pain if he is drunk. He is a great guy other than that, and very generous, but I'm just giving you a warning, LOL. But it would be great to meet a fellow StripperWeb member from Daytona, since Hannah went back to Indianapolis, Zaza to Amsterdam, and I never got to actually meet Fire_Woman before she left...

I purchased Fawnia's pole work video a few years ago and found it quite informative. I didn't really get much from the floor work video though.
I also purchased 3 of Fawnia's videos and it was a waste of my money. They are good videos for a woman who is *considering* dancing, but if you've been dancing more than a week they are way too basic.
As one just getting started in this industry, I found the videos informative. They consist primarily of fawnia or one of her friends demonstrating various moves with a voice over as she instructs how the moves are done.
I think that if you are looking for instruction in pole work then you would find the video helpful.
She goes into a fair amount of detail on things like hand placement, using the proper foot work to supply momentum etc. I feel that the pole work video would be worth while if just to help build confidence and help one avoid breaking their necks..lol
Still as djoser said practice practice practice.;-)

As I have matured,I have learned "that one good turn....usually gets most of the blankets",-)

Sapphire right, I have the video too. I learn more about pole trick from the girls that work at the club. When you get the basic positioning on the pole. The rest come easy to you. I learn in 3 day. Spins, upside down moves. And I even created my own move.
Also what I did was go to kid park like around midnight with a friend of mine and work out out onthe playground pole.

Those medium-sized lampposts on many downtown city streets can now be added to the list of places to try a few tricks. A little thicker, at five or six inches of diameter, than your typical stage pole, but doable. Just make sure the top of the damned thing is fastened securely, the one I tried had its top wobble most distressingly. Fortunately there were no police nearby to guard public property from such threats of destruction.
I didn't try to do anything fancy, but enough to know it can be done, and next time I go there, I'll do it without a clove cigarette dangling from my lips, and preferably a spotter. Those brick sidewalk pavers look to be even harder on the head than a wooden stage floor.

Playgrounds, or parks with swingset poles, and monkey bars!
This is how i got alot of experience! The monkey bars force you to move your body in different positions, while the swing poles are great to learn for twirls, and grabbing. I did this nightly for about a year. Great for building muscle tone and strength. Because thats what pole tricks are all about. If you don't have strength, you can't do any pole tricks!

Also, check Ebay for the videos...maybe you can get a good one cheap?

There is a limited amount you can learn from a video. I taught myself from a deja vu' video but I would not recommend you do it that way. Any athletic endeavor requires you to be in top shape to be successful. The schools usually are far away and expensive. The economical way is to buddy up with an experienced friend to show you the ropes. Many of the advanced tricks are dangerous if not properly executed, like anything else, and should not be attempted without proper supervision.
Besides that, the videos are just an introduction. You want to develop your own unique routines and tricks.
Very true Ryan,
and if you must practice alone like i do (still) i have yoga matts all around the pole base. The videos suck. It's like riding a horse, really, you have to get on and feel the animal under you. Someone can only teach you the basics, sooner than later they let you go it alone. Or a bike, you can watch all day, but it teaches you not much. Get on yourself. The pole is the same. You have to get around and on it.
I started with just feeling it all over, letting my hands get used to holding it, and slowly lifting a leg for less balance, and more dependence on the pole. It does work, but in stages. It took me years to learn how to hang upside down on the pole and make it look cool. Pamela
