    Default What's in a name?

Ok here is the thing. When I started dancing (2 years ago) my stage name was Paris. I stopped dancing, now a year later Im getting back into the buisiness. Im thinking of changing my stage name. I will be at a different club, so all the customers will be new to me. I couldnt go back to my old club with a different name cause Im told people still ask about me there (Ive been gone for a year)

Im not sure how to pick a new one. Do you think that a name has to fit the person in terms of what she looks like. I have thought of names and been told "It doesnt go with me, or it doesnt fit me" Im talking names names not names like Sensation, or Desire and the like.

Like my name here, Amaya. would i suit a golden brown haired, blue eyed, busty little dancer??? Or is it too exotic sounding (I got it off a website that offers alternatives to popular names) Ive never met a dancer named Amaya, I think thats why Im drawn to it.

So do you have to look like that name, or does the name conform to the dancer after awhile, and it just fits.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I couldpost a pic so you all could give me name suggestions Is there a way to do that?

Yes, if you click on "gallery" on the top right, then "uploads", then "add photos" on the top right

I have known a couple girls called Amaya in the past - I think it's a nice name. Personally, I think the name is more about what you are drawn to, not what you think fits you physically, because if you're drawn to it for some reason then it must fit your personality, which is what really counts IMO.

Bridgette: I know what you mean, I just was wondering if anyone would think its too ethnic (sounds a little hawiian to me) for petite white girl. Besides I really wanted somthing that most people probably didnt hear in a SC too often.

Hawaiian, I was sorta thinking of the Mayan or incas, so I guess sounding ethnic sorta rings true? I wouldnt let that deter you, if you like it - it feels good - you can answer to it - thats all that matters!

Never explain yourself to anyone, because the person who likes you doesn't need it and the person that dislikes you won't believe it.

Before choosing a name, keep in mind how much of its derivatives you can stand. For instance, I was Lola for a year. I do look like a Lola, but overlooked the Hispanic connotation (I am half east-Indian, and also German, English, and Irish). It seems like every time I introduced myself someone would sing, "Her name was Lo-la..." or say , "Run, Lola, run!". Now, these guys were just trying to be cute and original (ha!), but still, it can wear on you. Not to mention that every Latin guy in the place would start speaking Spanish to me once they found out my name... language barriers can make getting dances hard! Because I live in FL and have brown skin, they all expected a Latin dancer! So, it just goes to show, a name is as important as anything else in this business. Choose fun sounding names for yourself and run them by one male friend and one older dancer before making the final decision!

I think three things go into it:

    1. What sort of "persona" are you trying to achieve? For example, if you have exotic, Carribean looks, you might want a Carribean-sounding name and play off of that look with an act (costumes, etc.) that fall into that vein. I played the "naughty schoolgirl" act mainly cuz that fits my looks, accent, etc. However, that meant I needed to use stage names (and I used several) that fit. I was Candace mainly, and also went by Candy, Brittany, and a few others. Everything was designed to fit the middle-aged coat-and-tie businessman's vision of what a sorority girl TODAY would look and sound like.

    2. You need a stage name that can be easily pronounced in a bar over loud music. Do you have a pierced tongue? I knew a girl who had a nearly unpronounceable name and a tongue piercing to boot! She wasted a LOT of time (and frankly it cost her some money) cuz customers, DJ's, etc., never knew her name!!!

    3. What's the general persona in your club? If your club attracts a lot of up-scale business types (like Tiffany's did when I worked there), then a stage name (and persona that goes with it) that sounds a little TOO exotic might not work. Look, maybe some business guy WANTS Mistress Nirvana to take him to the VIP room and give him a good spanking with her riding crop. HOWEVER, if he's in the club with some of his fellow businessmen, planning to drop a few hundred dollars on some beers and a few lap dances, then he's PROLLY gonna opt for Cindy (or Bambi or Tiffany) who's all embarassed that she's lost her scholarship and now has to dance for tips to make tuition money.

Thanks for all the great input.
Susan: I would love to hear what persona you think this name (Amaya) portrays. Also I have the chance to keep my old name (Paris) what do you think that says?
Paris was the only name I used and in that club the crowd was diverse.
    thanx again for the input.

Amaya is a soft name. I would expect long, soft hair, maybe some curves. A gentle personality.

Paris is sophisticated, but so common anymore that it's not really sophisticated. I expect an overly tan, overly blond girl who would like to go to Paris someday but probably hasn't been out of her state (sorry, just an impression).

I like Amaya a lot better. But Paris could be good. :-)
