Does anybody know whether I need a dancer's license (or business license) to work in San Francisco?

No licensing required, just show up and audition at the club. Be prepared for very high mileage (some of the highest in the country) and very high stage fees. Money is not good there now (unless you are okay with doing extras), so if you are traveling there you may want to wait til May, June, and early July. That is usually the busiest convention time. You can check the Moscone Center webpage for the convention schedule.

Thanks for the info Britney. I know that most of the clubs in SF are affiliated with the Vu chain. Are there any places left that don't do W2/1099s? And if they do, does the paperwork specify anywhere that you were a dancer? Can I say I was a waitress or something? I'm planning on becoming a pharmacist and for licensure i have to undergo a background check, so I'm trying to minimize the paper trail.

In SF you do get a 1099, the bar tenders/waitresses get W-2s. Although it doesn't say anywhere on any 1099 or W-2 what your job was (1099s do say the type of income i.e. non-employee compensation, rental income, etc) which may imply along with the business name on the 1099 the type of work you did.
If you really want to make some extra money during the spring/summer while dancing I work further south in L.A. or San Diego where you also get a lot of convention/tourist money. SF clubs, Deja Vu owned or not, are no joke and can be very stigmatizing to dancers who work there.

You may want to try Brass Rail in Sunnyvale. They are bikini and stage only but business is excellent and they hire all pretty girls who sign up for the wet T shirt contest on Wed nights. Also try T's in san Jose or Hanky Panky in Redwood City. No sex in those clubs and low payouts.

I have worked in both the Hanky Panky and Brass Rail. Brass Rail is larger and more opportunity to make money because you are waitressing as well as dancing. At least that was the set up while I was there.
I took a long hiatus from dancing and started up again in 2001, in the Hanky Panky. The money can be up and down, but Tina is right about the payout being low.
The dancer's who have been there forever can be a bit territorial. Also, they have a large Mexican clientele there who don't always speak English so well. The good thing about this type of clientele is that they prefer their dancers healthy and meatier than average. So you can make money here and have your burrito too!
Cheers,
Corey
PS This is a very strict club. The owner here will suspend or fire any dancer suspected of providing extras in or just outside the club. Except, when it comes to him. His name is Jose.

I'm looking at the Mitchell O'Farrel Theater. Does anybody know if there is good money-making money potential at this club? Also, what kind of paperwork and auditions do they require? Do you have to be really good at dancing/performing?

To work at MBOT, you have to put on a pretty stellar show! They rarely hire anyone over 30 and expect to do major extras to pay the $400 or so that you have to tip out to everyone there!
They have a contest on Mondays, that is their audition process. I don't know about the paper work. I was offered a job there six years ago and I didn't take it. My 31st B-day is approaching so they wouldn't take me now.
Good luck and cheers,
Corey

Thanks for all the info. everybody. I can't dance period........right now...so I guess MBOT is out of the question. What clubs in SF are the topshelf clubs (not necessarily so performance oriented)? Have the highest earning potentials?

Couple of things to consider if you want to work at MBOT. Are to you comfortable doing extras? Some girls are non-extras still do good are really good looking and have a stand out personality. What do you look like? They tend to hire the "classic beaty" look meaning, tall, slim, pretty face and little or no tatoo/piercings. As far as tipout goes its 400night/265day but they do give you min wage so I don't know if its 1099m or w2.I haven't been there since before lent and I am hoping to get back after easter so I double check.
To corey: who says you have to be under 30 to get hired there. Some of the dancers there have been there since the 80's! In fact the majority are around that age. The key thing is DON'T LOOK 30. The front women for the club are definately Rita and Ivanka. They are both ex-penthouse/pornstars and are 30 at least.
PS. Two girls from club ante work there now(forgot their names, one has aussie accent) and both are doing fine by the looks of it.
whats a PL to do?

Oh, I know there are dancers who are there who are way over 30, but like you said, they have been there since the 80's. I get guessed between 23-28 depending on my mood, but most people think my body is hard, lean and I was mistaken for being the light-weight female kick boxing champion for the USA at the gym the other day. That gives you an idea of what shape I am in.
I just know that they won't hire NEW girls over 30 and I was hired there before( I was 30). I just couldn't handle working there at that point in my life.
I know the two girls from Ante's who work there. The Australian one went by "Anna" and the blonde, who I knew longer, was "Bailey." Bailey or "Maddie" as she is called now is really sweet and adorable. She does have a great look too!
I am sure they are doing well there.
Cheers,

MBOT is extremely hard to get hired at.. I have heard that you don't necessarily need to be able to dance well, but the hiring manager that night needs to have taken a great interest in you. I would guess it might be harder to get hired there than Scores in LV? (Could be wrong, sorry if I am, just an estimate).. I work at New Century in SF, and they just remodeled it. It's hit or miss there, but the money still comes around![]()

Bebe, can you tell me more about new Century? What's the auditioning process like, necessary paperwork, 1099s or W2s, typical night's net, other dancer's attitude, type of clientele, etc?
