Default Protect yourself at work and away from work

Some basic measures to take to keep yourself from getting hurt, stalked, or killed because of being a stripper. Here is what I do to protect myself:

    1. I never get drunk at work. Most of the time I don't even have one alcoholic beverage. If the customers feel better about me drinking, I order non-alcoholic beer in a glass. Same price as draught beer, and he doesn't know the difference.

    2. I never give out my real name, or any information that can give the customer an idea where to find me in my off hours (i.e; I exercise at Bally Total Fitness, when in actuality I am a member or 24 Hour Fitness)

    3. I always carry pepper spray with me. I bought it at a police supply store, so it is the good stuff.

    4. I always have a male club employee walk me to my vehicle at the end of my shift.

    5. If anyone follows me after I leave the club, I don't hesitate to call 911, or drive to City hall. I never drink, therefore I don't have to worry about DUI, and even if I did drink too much to drive, I would rather get a DUI than get killed by some crazy customer who will get cushy treatment in an insane asylum for the rest of his life.

    6. And to deter those more determined individuals, I have my car registered to a P.O. box, and an invalid street address. So even if they do have access to DMV records, they aren't going to find me. I drive a nondescript car (a million others like it on the road) and have plain license plates. Something like personalized plates make you stand out like a sore thumb.

    7. And lastly, I always have someone that I call to check in with before and after work. I call when I am safely inside the club, and when I have safely arrived home after work. This is usually another dancer or night owl friend, but always someone I trust totally. If I fail to call, they know something is up, and start looking for me.

Another great life saving tip, if you can have a friend (male) take you to work and pick you up. I do. I will not drive my car to work. Because to be honest from the day i bought it i like it too damn much, and did not want it keyed. However on a serious note, i don't want my car in any way shape or form associated with me. I have a hospital sticker for parking on it, so that should help for my "job" status. I feel safe inside work and home. It's getting there and leaving i feel the most vunerable. And i can't think of anyplace i ever go that does not have lots of people around. All in all i feel pretty safe, and yes..i have gotten careless before i believe. But i have to keep reminding myself no one is immune to being attacked. Pamela

Paris I agree. But another thing is some women dont like to tell any what they do, but it's good for one person to know where you are going and dancing at. Done forget your cell phone either.

For anyone in Seattle interested in self defence classes, I highly, highly recommend the ones offered by Full Circle Self Defence in Ballard. You can find them online by linking from outrageouslyfitseattle.com, they work out of the same facility. If you're not in seattle, any class that uses the Model Mugging system is worth your time. You get to work with the guys in the giant padding, so everything you learn you learn for real. Good stuff.

I agree that in the final analysis you may possibly find yourself in a dangerous situation with nobody to help you. Under these circumstances a few simple self-defense skills can do wonders to dissuade a pervert customer who won't take no for an answer. If he's really determined, i.e. planning on ripping you off or worse, I find that my .357 magnum usually resolves the situation. But 'don't try this at home", if you're going to carry you need to be prepared to use it or you're worse off than if you had just taken your lumps! Also, this doesn't work in particular states with outrageous handgun control laws, where you can actually wind up worse off if you plug an attacker than if you just let the bastard rip you off and rape you i.e. being laid up for a month or 2 with injuries versus doing 3 years for armed assault - remember you'll have to prove attempted rape to avoid an assault charge, and the bastard's lawyer will say that you solicited money from him for sex, took his money [instead of earning it working at the club all night], and then tried to rip HIM off at gunpoint!

Actually, you're at greatest risk between the point that you leave the club and your car starts moving. If you are required to tip bouncers, they should damn well escort you to your car or at the very least watch while you walk to your car. In big cities this doesn't work well though if you must park out of sight of the club, and I often invest in a cab ride from the front door of the club rather than drive my own car in these situations (also, big city parking is usually just as expensive as a short cab ride).

In regard to the personal info thing, this is my #1 gripe with dancer's licensing. In a city that requires licensing, odds are that if you have been licensed as a dancer your real name, address and other personal info (some including picture ID) are a matter of public record and available to anybody that asks to see them at the local city hall. Some cities even force girls to "wear" their licenses including actual personal info (like around their ankle) which is even worse since all any club customer with ideas has to do is look down! In these areas, if someone is determined to stalk you he can find all the info he needs through licensing records and doesn't need to follow you from the club. Personally, I would never dance locally if I lived in a city that required dancer's licensing.

I agree with Pamela that the absolute best and safest alternative is to have a large male friend in a 4WD pickup with a gun rack visible through the back window drop you off and pick you up at the club's door!

The one thing I have learned is if u are ever in a situation, psycho stalker, someone following you, or really bad car accident. Never stop thinking. So many people panic and let their mind shut down. Evry second u are in a situation, keep thinking about what to do, what to say, and ways to get out of ur situation fast. The one thing I will say is that NOONE will ever take me from my initial crime scene.
This means if soemone is trying to hurt you, rape you, whatever, whether they succeed or not, never let them remove u from the place the crime refused. Once someone takes you from here, u are pretty much dead. What reason does someone have 2 try to get u into a vehicle and take u somewhere if they already got or did what they intended to get or do.
Another thing that most girls don't even think about is no matter what day of the week, time of night, or time of year. There is always someone at a fire station. I have been followed leaving IHOP at four in the morning after partying w/ the girls. He may have been some guy that was simply trying to flirt with me or talk 2 me, but he scared the hell out of me. I drove into the fire station, the garage was up b/c I guess they recently had a call. I drove all the way in, whipped around so my car was facing his turned on my hi beams, opened my sunroof and screamed and honked my horn like a maniac. Needless 2 say I woke up several firefighters really quickly and told them the situation. In the three minutes it took for me to wake them up, the guy was pulling away and fast.
Also, one more thing, if someone does get u in a car, if in the car with the individual take ur chances and snatch the wheel and try to wreck the car. U only have one chance to do this so try well. And, if in the trunk, snatch out the little cable to make the taillight go off. U'd be surprised how many criminals are caught by simple routine traffic stops.
If someone is following you, and u can't get away or to nearest police station, fire dpt, dial 911 and keep driving. Don't pull newhere u r not familiar and get lost or get boxed in, and if u do, don't be afraid to use ur car as a weapon. Most people get boxed in and feel trapped, depending on ur car, put it in gear and ram if u have 2.

So So true Divyne Kennedy, When i am behind the wheel of my car, i feel very powerful! No one better ever try to get in my car, well my doors lock when the seat belts wrap. (good and bad, but i have an extra set, on me always.) WE as women have the most power behind the wheel, if we are aware of our surroundings. I would not hesitate for a moment, to run someone over who is trying to smash out my windows or break into me. My cell is always there. I will let 911 hear everything, even if i have to lay the phone down to save myself, i will not hang it up. Yelling my location, and the type of vehicle or person who is attacking me. Not in my car. And i always stop at red lights a few feet away from the car infront. I can't get boxed in then, i have enough room to bump out from the vehicle in front of me. Lots of road rage in my area anyway. So we keep on top of it. My car will save my life.
Ps never happened to me directly, but my guy friend flicked someone off, because he thought he knew who it was, it was a car just like his friends, wrong one however, boy did we book all through neighbour hoods until we lost him. He kinda had fun. I did not think so. As he drives a Carerra, and was going very fast. But i am a woman. Not funny. Friggin road rage. Pamela

Not all areas will 911 work on your cell phone. I have the direct dial numbers of all the fire and police stations between home and the clubs where I work on my memory dialer on the cell phone. I danced for a bunch of cops, so I had their cell phone numbers too. One time when a creep followed me from the Steak and Shake, I called a cop customer. He told me to drive toward the Precinct House. He met me there with a couple of other road cops a SGT and a K-9 officer. I'm pretty sure the creep still has a phobia about dogs. By the way, Dogs are a girl's best friend.

One of the girls from my work was recently followed home and robbed at gunpoint by three guys. And the rumor in the dressing room is that this is actually the second incident involving the same guys! Although I really have a hard time understanding how could you not notice if someone is following you?

I don't know where you work, Paris, but it must be a very dangerous area or you're just plain paranoid. What if you get to know a customer very, very well???

Dood, I am such a paranoid mofo. That's the nice thing about being a cowgirl, guns are standard equipment. This summer I'm getthing a matched pair of Ruger Vaquero .44s with ivory grips. Mostly for cowboy mounted shooting, but for the nice click of a single action revolver. Mmmmm. My ranch hand buddy made his wife this totally bad ass leather purse that has a gun holster positioned just so, so she can look like she's reaching in her purse, and pull her gun. I've had two or three fuckers try to rape me. I won't be the least bit shy about plugging the next one.

I'm planning on buying a truck soon so aside from the fact that my plates absolutely must say "GRL TOI" a truck does say "don't fuck with me." A blue heeler riding in the truck says "my dog will castrate you if you try." A rifle rack and an NRA sticker oughta just about settle it. Of course my fly rod will probably be in the rack, but no mind.

One of my best friends in high school, tiny, adorable thing was raped and beaten walking home from work in our quiet little neighborhood. She was less than 5' and maybe 90lbs. Whatever you do, fucking holler. Fight for all you've got because it could well be your life. Yell fire, no one wants to see a rape. Another thing my aunt learned in a class, was make yourself puke, or drop down to the ground and eat grass. Something weird/disgusting. If you're "gross" odds are you might get kicked a few times, but left.

Wow, Smurf, my hat's off to you if you can fire a Ruger .44 and still be standing up afterwards! I've fired a friend's Ruger Redhawk and the recoil damn near caused me to smack myself in the head! A .357 is about my limit, especially when you consider the fact that the most probable situation I'd have to use it in would be while I'm wearing 5" heels!

Yeah, after the shooting incident in that Indiana club where the clubowner was shot right in the club while I was dancing there, there are a few situations where I now take along my friends Mr. Smith & Mr. Wesson. But as I posted earlier, "don't try this at home" - because of gun control laws and armed assault laws you can be in a lot more trouble if you try this and do it wrong than if you just take your lumps.

Guns are great, if in the right hands! My roomate has a license to carry, i never went that far, but did go to a shooting range alot with him. He carries a H&K 45. And a Glock 9 mm.
Damn shoot one of those puppies! I about lost my shoulder, and had police officers around who laughed. Told me to break in.
I never had to show one to anybody at my home i have great protection , as my dogs will do a damn good job, taking all 5 down (dogs)would be hard. But the speak of guns raised my attention. I do enjoy them. Florida is great with the gun laws. (must be concealed). Must have a permit to carry, and an instructor can teach you what you need to from his home. "concealed weapons permit". Along with finger prints and pic taken. So many hours at the range. The man was very nice. Ex CIA instructor.

Even more important is to BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS! Both girls were robbed with a gun to their head. Can't quite pull your own piece with a barrell to your melon!

    Great Thread!
I wanna gun now, to keep in my glove box. I'm always afraid ill get stuck having car trouble on the side of the road at night. Sure I have a cell phone but it might take the other party a while to get to me, who knows what kind of weirdo will pull over with the excuse of wanting to help a pretty girl. Scary.

I have someone escort me to my vehicle. I have noticed customers sitting in their vehicles during closing time. It's as though they get excited seeing what what we look like in street clothes or something. This happens all the time, do ya'll get this?

Sometimes it's hard to notice if someone's following me because there is so many people on the road where I live, I try to circle the block once or twice, sure enough that's when you can tell when you've been followed.

    Stay safe.

How hard is it for a stripper to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon? We have a great reason, but I don't think we're considered the "type". Doesn't the application ask all sorts of personal info and don't they usually interview neighbors and stuff like that?

In New York, obtaining a pistol permit is a real exercise these days. You are subjected to a thorough investigation (criminal and personal), plus you need a favorable recommendation either from people with ties to the local 'gun community' (i.e. target range, gun shoppes) or local law enforcement community (cops, judges), preferably both. And every state has different laws regarding carrying, concealing etc. But I have to admit that from the position of a 5'3" girl alone in the middle of the night, who finds herself dealing with parking lot lurkers or (worse) breaking down on the side of the road on the way home, a pistol in the glove compartment can serve as a great "equalizer".

One of the reasons I havn't been posting lately is that I got a new part time job. I work as an assistant manager at a local adult toy and clothing store. (I get a 40% discount on all dancewear too )
Anyway, last week, one of the other girls who works there was attacked in the parking lot just after she closed up shop. The police thought it was a personal dispute and not an attack on the store itself because they didn't try to rob her, just kicked her ass.
So I was asking our regional manager about what kinds of protection we are allowed to have with us. No guns, no stunguns. So that left me with mace or pepperspray. But I'm not really comfortable with that because it tends to be a little windy this time of year and I don't want to spray somebody and have it blow back in MY face. :o
And that led me to a very important suggestion for all women. Not just those of us who work in adult businesses. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not just who's around that might want to hurt you, but also what you can use to hurt them back. I looked around our sales counter and noticed a BOXCUTTER, a pair of SCISSORS, a FLOOR SCRAPER, and (my fave) a SCREWDRIVER. I like the screwdriver the best because it's relatively small, lightweight, easy to conceal, very sharp, and deadly as hell if pointed in the right direction.
Ladies, in any situation, always take inventory of what you can use to your advantage. At first glance I felt like I was very vulnerable in the store, but after looking a little more closely, I realized that, although I didn't have a gun, I was armed and dangerous!
