Default square heel or wedge=better balance?

Just wondering if anyone prefers square heel platforms or the wedge style for dancing. Is it more difficult to dance in a wedge style shoe??
Would really appreciate the info before buying new shoes, thanks

I would venture that the laws of physics would lend themselves to favoring the wedge shoes or the square heels over the spike heeled variety becuase your weight would theoretically have more surface area to be balanced on. That said, I have personally found that the actual pitch of the shoe (the actual heel hight between platform and the uppermost height of the heel) has the most to do with balance. I would also say that the skinnier heels look better. All of my shoes are 6" with a true difference of 4" between the platform and heel (ie, 2" platform) and a squarer toe. As little as 1/2" difference has thrown me when I get used to a height. Any lower and my foot looks lengthened. The squarer toe bed gives you the additional balance that your toes can provide. Stand on your tip toes barefoot and see what I mean.

So... if you are in a position to, try on the shoes before you buy. If the shoe is displayed on a shelf, tap it gently and see how much it wobbles, that is the ultimate indication of the balance of any heeled shoe itself. If the shoe itself is not balanced, you won't feel stable.

I have had good luck with the lucite wedge shoes (like these: http://www.snaz75.com/el-623-brook.html )with the narrow heel which has the proper pitch for me and also gives the illusion of a narrow heel which will in turn give the illusion of a narrow ankle.

As far as dancing goes, since most movement is performed from the toe rather than the heel, you shouldn't notice much trouble dancing in the wedge heels. My heels often don't touch the ground when I dance and I have noticed other dancers doing this as well. Just beware of the chunky heels; they are often *wobbly* feeling to me (Pleaser brand specifically).

Sorry for the ramble, but I am an ex ballet dancer and almost went to school to design shoes I am too interested for my own good!

I have two pairs of wedge heels and they are the most comfortable dancer shoes I have ever owned. I think that they sacrifice a little something in sexiness, but the benefits of the extra stability and comfort are just amazing. They certainly work for me. There is a style that's not a solid wedge, but the heel and the platform are connected together, and these are also extra stable and not quite as chunky-looking as the wedge.

With out a doubt a platform shoe is more comfortable. And we were made to go barefoot, it's the perfect way to take care of your posture and feet, a platform is more of a natural fit.
But i don't do platforms, i love a 7 or 8" spike anytime for dancing.

Lol, Sapphire i will admit i fall, not only off the pole but while walking at times. I am far to used to it! They are high, and the front of your legs will ache if you don't rest them...alot. Thats why sitting with a customer helps me in 2 ways, direct eye contact, and rest my legs. And it's not my feet that ever hurt. But i will admit i FALL! Klutz i am. But i still have fun, until i break a leg.

OMG 8 inches without a platform. I wear six inch ones without a platform and my feet are totally on tiptoe. As far as wedge heels go i have not danced in them but i know for casual wear they are so stable. I wore a pair on holiday in Cancun and was even climbing Mayan pyramids in them - not something i would even try to do in stilettos.

I'd love to see a link for a pair of 8 inchers no platform. They sound like fetish shoes. Pamela, when you fall do you fall with grace and style? Like a damsel in distress?

oh gosh no! I fall like i a drunk. It's true, but i love them. I have my camera charged, and am going to send a picture of them in! They are nice. I don't wear them every night, but they are a fav. Yes, i cater to a fetish website which includes doing foot shows on video. So i have many pair of HIGH shoes and boots!

:o Pamela, just read your messages about spike heels, wow! Your legs must look amazing in those!
Thank you Collete for your advice about wedges, I think I will pick up a pair and try it out.
By the way I saw your new pics and they are very cute.

sorry, Veronika , I forgot to thank you for your very helpful advice especially about testing the wobble of the shoe on the shelf. Very good idea. I think I'll order a wedge and a square heel shoe to test.
I would love to just dance in sneakers or boots like Britney Spears--well, actually, I can't dance like Britney, but it sure looks a lot more comfortable.

At the last club I was at, there was one girl who danced barefoot onstage as part of her hawaiian girl schtick. I envied the freedom (if not the germs :-/). One girl at my current club wears a cheerleader costume and these sort of heeled/platform sneakers (I think made by Sketchers). It *can* be done, but I personally think heels make the legs and butt look sooo much nicer.

BTW, I think the wedges that Collette references are the ones I have a link to. It is a nice blend of the two styles (spike and wedge). The clear ones are especially nice as the catch the light well.

    Good luck!
