to be opening a strip club?

I ask because I was reading the Village Voice this morning and I noticed an ad for a new Penthouse club that is apparently soon to open in Manhattan.

Quite a few new clubs have popped up in Manhattan (& Queens) as of late. I question the business savvy of owners. I mean, how many so-called "upscale gentlemen's clubs" do we really need and how well can they possibly do with the war and the state of our economy? Not to mention summer is right around the corner, and the affluent men (those not laid off or who haven't lost all their money in the stock market or haven't been thrown in jail by the SEC) tend to go out to the Hamptons or Jersey Shore. There's Scores (soon Scores West), Privilege, Lace, VIP Club, Club Kaos, Silk, Flashdancers, NY Dolls...and now the Penthouse Club.

    I just don't get it.

One of my favorite clubs in Denver may have a "Penthouse" sign on it now. I just mention that because it may be that some club is buying into the Penthouse franchise as opposed to a new club opening.

But yeah, Adina, it doesn't seem like a good time right now in any event. I agree with you.

    This is a wierd business...

Many business openings are made in the face of logic, which is why so many business failures take place. The restaurant business is famous for this, and nightclubs of any sort don't have a much better survival rate. Some of the guys I have met who want someday to open a topless bar are the last guys who should try it!

It does take a lot of cash, or at least credit, to open an exotic dance club, especially an "upscale" version. And a lot of cash or credit is hard to come by, particularly in this day and age. You would think that anyone possessing these resources would be clever enough to use them profitably.

But I did notice, when I was getting started doing architectural renderings, that people who have a lot of money do not automatically invest it wisely. This I found to be very common in a real estate "boom" environment, when it seemed like the developers were like a pack of rabid weasels, in a frenzy to build anything, anywhere...

The worst guys were the ones who were clever enough to have done very well in one industry, but who were not quite clever enough to realize that their business acumen wasn't automatically going to apply to any and all efforts they might choose to make, in any field, especially real estate development.

These were some of the most arrogant people I have ever encountered, probably from having their asses kissed so much. I am a patriot in my own way, but Americans have a most disgusting habit of worshipping wealth, and those who have acquired it...

When the "bust" came, as it invariably does, the guys who built their shopping centers out in the swamps were the first to go belly up.

People are sheep, and businessmen are no different--take a look at how the stock market works and it becomes frighteningly apparent. Intelligence in and of itself is not necessarily the answer. Even the most intelligent of sheep will be devoured by the merely clever wolf.

Is this "Penthouse" club part of a proven national chain, with a clever guiding hand, and vast resources to pour into an initially costly venture? Then they may make it in spite of the odds.

Guys don't stop getting excited by beautiful women no matter how bad the economy gets, and anyone high up in the military/industrial complex will not be hurt by this little war, or Bush's economic floundering. Trust me, anyone who is in any of the myriad defense-related industries is not worried about the economy.

Although if they were really clever they might be worried about what's going to happen five or ten years from now...

I don't know the NYC scene, I haven't been there in several years, before I ever got into this industry. It does sound as though there are a few too many such clubs there, and that it's a crazy idea. I'd be very interested to hear what NYCjacqueline or Melonie have to say about this, or anyone else from NYC...

Thank you, Adina, for your amusing and thought-provoking post (I especially liked the line about being thrown in jail by the SEC).
