    Default Starting Slowly

Since I've been considering stripping, I've decided for me the best route would be to waitress at a club first. I already have experience with that. I feel it would give me the opportunity to learn about the scene from the inside, it would allow me to get to know the people I'll be around while I'm dancing, and most importantly, I'll witness a lot of dancing in action to add to my non-existant repertoire of exotic dance moves.

As far as dancing is concerned I'm a bit shy. When I move I am graceful and coordinated, and have had many many people say I have very feline qualities or I simply remind them of a cat. So dancing I can learn with no movement-induced disadvantages. But I do want to practice A LOT before I even audition much less try to make money doing it.

Has anyone else done this? Any advice for an aspiring newbie? Especially regarding dancing...

    TIA
    Sylph

as a fellow newbie, it sounds like a great idea to me.
get used to the atmosphere and learn thru observation.
I ordered some tapes on exotic dancing myself from exoticdance lessons.com, partially as confidence builders.
as for waitressing everyone here keeps telling the joke..."whats the difference between a dance club waitress and a dancer????"
    about 2 weeks...
As I have matured,I have learned "that one good turn....usually gets most of the blankets",-)

I didn't start out waitressing...just jumped right in about a year ago. I didn't know how to dance (I still laugh at the manager's response to my audition of, "you can't dance, but I'll book you anyway".)

You pick it up. Dancing on stage is different than dancing in a night club. It's s-l-o-w and it centers around your hips.

What came as a surprise to me was that as nerve-wracking as stage dancing was, it was nothing compred to the up-close-and-personal stuff. That's where you're going to make your money, so you want to be comfortable there.

I've met a couple of girls who made the "jump" from waitress to stage. Except for girls who had ankle injuries (see other comments I've made about exercise!), I've only met one who decided she'd rather wait tables and went back to that. Most girls I've known just started as a dancer (me, fer instance), but what you're saying makes a lot of sense.

The ONLY prob..... ever jumped off a high-dive into a pool? Well, the way to do it is go up there and dammit DO IT!!! If you look down at the water long enuf, you're gonna psyche yourself out. I've never done a survey, but I wonder how MANY waitresses have THOUGHT about dancing but just psyched themselves out.... ("Maybe TOMORROW night.....") Ya know?

Yes, I may psyche myself out starting as a waitress. I'm not worried about "psyching myself out" per se but I may decide it's not for me before I actually do it.

I may also psyche myself out starting out as a dancer. There's personal skills to be learned in the club (since you make most of your money on the floor rather than stage) and in Houston there's so many extras being handed out (Champagne Rooms are synonymous with brothels here) that going in without developing a thick skin and walking away broke and dejected in the beginning would REALLY psyche me out.

Who knows? I may make more money as a waitress anyhow. My goal right now isn't so much to specifically be a dancer (though it seems like fun and something to do just to have it under my belt) but to get into the scene and learn more about it and make as much money as I can from it without betraying my values. I've even heard people who've known female bartenders in these clubs get outrageous gifts and lots of money working where they do. Bartending would be fun too.

My basic personality is the type to seek experience for the sake of experience, and knowledge for the sake of knowledge. If I get that in a thong, selling drinks, or behind a bar mixing them, I'll walk away with wads more cash than I would at most other jobs and a rich life experience with knowledge and understanding of something most people never know much about.

But hey, I still think dancing would be really cool. I'll see how it works in Houston and if the dancers make more money than the waitresses or if the flak they get is worth the extra money they get, then I don't see much else holding me back from dancing. (Except my man, but an ultimatum from him will make me a single woman!)

That ;s what I want to do also.I have done couple of waitressing jobs and even though i do not like to a server, i guess you are little bit of a server when you dance too

when I tried Pure Platinum, in Ft Lauderdale they wouldnt hire me as a waitress lol, they said I should be an entertainer instead, but of course at that time I didnt have any idea about anything

When I decided to dance I went to a few clubs and just watched(I did this during the weekend and one slow night during the week) I picked the these times so I could see what was going on when there was a crowd and when there was not. I do not think that it is necessary to waitress first. The clubs that I worked at that had wait staff I did not get the feeling that they knew what we (dancers) really did for a living. I am a strong believer that experience is the best teacher. But just doing a little research and jumping in worked for me. But by all means do what makes you feel comfortable, I just think that it is a waste of time.

I also went to different clubs before I started dancing! And what you are doing is actually very cool. Just take your time and ease into it. At my club there are 2 females that switch back and forth between waitress and dancer. Juat ask your manager if you can do taht if you rather.

And you being shy, it will leave you rela fast. I wa steh shyest person any one had ever met but dancing opened me up and I realized if I wanted to be any good at it, I needed to ask and talk to the customers. It eases its way out!

    Good luck!!! Best wishes!!

Many "extras" are part of the dance which is "supposed" to cost $20 (I generally don't pay more than $10 for a dance)
Come on, there goes "lover" with his $10.00 lap dances! Sylph, check and see if your club allows girls to lap dance clients at the bar without necessarily having to go onstage nor give privates/VIP's. That way you can get your "toilet training" in exotic dancing before you finally decide to try full-blown stripping. Good luck .

    Sxybooty,
are you a dancer at Pure Platinum in Ft. Lauderdale?
I came up from Lauderdale, and used to work at Pure Platinum. It's a nice club. Lots of regulars.
Did you notice they look for that certain look for dancers as well as the waitresses? But it is/was a nice club then. I was at Thee Doll house....WOW what a ride.
