    Ruined Snow Penis Stimulates Debate

    By HANA R. ALBERTS
    Crimson Staff Writer

    CRIMSON/ LOWELL K. CHOW
A snow sculpture, iced to prevent shrinking, was built in the Tercentary Theater on the night of Monday, February 10, 2003.

When a few members of the Harvard crew team decided to build a snowy representation of the male anatomy on Feb. 11, they never imagined it would be so hard to keep it up.
The 9-foot snow phallus, constructed in Tercentenary Theater, was torn down just hours after its erection.

But its impression still sparked an intense debate, from dining halls to dorm rooms, over the appropriateness of public displays of genitalia.

Even The Economist magazine weighed in on the discussion, offering the destruction of the sculpture as evidence of American prudishness on its usually staid pages.

But women’s groups on campus have led a chorus of complaints against the snow penis, arguing that such a display is demeaning to women.

“It was offensive because it was pornographic,” said Amy E. Keel ’04, who said she and her roommate “dismantled” the giant snow penis.

“As a feminist, pornography is degrading to women and creates a violent atmosphere,” she said.

Keel said that her personal experience as a rape survivor makes this statue even more uncomfortable to observe.

“Men think they have the right to force that on you,” she said. “It’s a logical extension.”

Furthermore, Keel claims that she and her roommate were verbally and physically harassed by a group of roughly 25 men when they attempted to tear down the statue with a cardboard tube at 1:30 a.m. the morning after it was built.

“A few people came out and crowded me with their bodies and one person shoved me away from the penis,” she said. “It was gendered violence, because [their comments] were said in the context of our gender and accompanied by aggressive actions toward us.”

Though Keel assumed some of her harassers were among the creators of the statue, she said she could not identify any of the men.

And crew team captain Michael J. Skey ’04 denies that he or any of the other makers of the statue had been involved in the incident. According to Spey, the group left the Yard over three hours before Keel and her roommate tried to take down the snow phallus.

“We cleared out by 10:15 p.m.,” Spey said. “We had morning practice, and if guys are out there that late I’d be pissed. That’s why we did it so early.”

But regardless of the alleged circumstances surrounding the snow penis’ downfall, a controversy over the meaning of the statue lingers.

Women’s Studies Lecturer Diane L. Rosenfeld, who teaches Women, Violence and the Law this semester, said that the implications of the snow phallus go beyond the legitimacy of the statue’s presence.

“The ice sculpture was erected in a public space, one that should be free from menacing reminders of women’s sexual vulnerability,” Rosenfeld wrote in an e-mail yesterday.

She said the snow penis follows a long line of public phallic symbols, including the Washington Monument and missiles.

“Women do not need to be reminded of the power of the symbol of the male genitalia,” Rosenfeld said. “My guess is that they are constantly reminded of it in daily messages.”

A discussion about feminist perspectives on the statue, sponsored by the Radcliffe Union of Students, will take place Tuesday night in the Adams House small dining room.

But the makers of the statue said they intended to build the snow penis as a simple joke.

Skey said he came up with the idea to allow a few members of the team to “hang out together” outside of practice.

“We built it for fun, instead of building a snowman,” he said. “We built it specifically as a junior high prank.”

Skey said he never expected such national attention—or such heated opposition.

“Once it turned around into a huge sexism debate, it was like a giant keg of gunpowder waiting for a spark,” Skey said.

In spite of Skey’s intentions, Keel said she was offended by the joke.

“I have a right to speak out against the joke,” Keel said. “I criticize the motives of putting it up, but since they did, it is within my rights to put it down. It goes both ways.”

Skey said he agreed Keel did not do anything wrong by knocking down the statue.

“If people found it obscene, they had a right to rip it down,” he said. “That’s perfectly true.”

But Skey said he thinks that at a school like Harvard, jokes can be blown out of proportion.

“Smart kids overanalyze things,” he said.

Hehehe...thats the most hilarious thing Ive seen in a long time..LOL ...I cant imagine why women would find this offensive however, I know I dont see it that way. If someone made a giant snow vagina do you think guys would be offended?...doubt it. Those women say its pornographic...porography by defenition means to arouse sexual feelings, since its a giant dick, it should be porographic for women(which is a good thing), but most women are so out of touch with their sexuality that they cant simply laugh at it and move on, they have to see it as offensive and threatening...isnt it strange that while men find female genitalia to be arousing, women find male genitalia to be offensive and grotesque? why do they feel like this? because they're ashamed and embarrasd by sex and sexuality. I really wish these tight-assed people would just get off it and enjoy looking at a dick with each oppertunity they get. Guys enjoy looking at pussy, girls should be able to enjoy looking at dick...even if its made of snow.

Was Lorena Bobbitt spotted leaving the scene with an ice saw? Sorry, I HAD to ask.

No, I think that the political correctness in a lot of academic settings has ruined an entire generation of college women from looking at their sexuality in a positive manner. Thats why they tend to go ballistic over such an innocuous thing like this. Its also why they can't stand women who work in the adult entertainment industry. Sure, they'll say that you girls who dance are "exploited souls" with no control over your lives, but I don't believe their pity for a minute.

Those gals should read a little Camille Paglia. It might clear things up a bit for them and make them understand that there's a little more to feminism than man hating.

    Wow...

I have to admit, I have conflicting thoughts in regards to this. On one hand, I do believe that some self-proclaimed feminists (speaking as one) need to shut the fuck up and masterbate. The whole line that pornography is demeaning towards women, as well as violent, is such a simplistic, "knee jerk" reaction to a very complex issue. I'm tired of hearing that rhetoric with the same ol' jargon as back up...with no real substance behind it. Because a lot of feminists say it's so, and since I'm a feminist, I should blindly and dumbly nod my head in a agreement...what a load of mindless bullshit.

I also find it disturbing that a representation of a penis is deemed as inherently "pornographic" (ie very very bad!!). Since when did the natural form of a man's body (it was circumcised...so it wasn't entirely natural actually) become inherently offensive, demeaning, or violating????

However (there's always a however when it comes to me....too much gray, no black and white!!!). I can understand where rape survivors (either male or female) would find this really uncomfortable...possibly causing negative physical and emotional responses. For these individuals a penis isn't just a penis...it is imbued with really negative, violent, demeaning, and dehumanizing imagery.

And to comment on something that sugar_Kane said...

A vagina doesn't have the loaded meaning that a penis has in this society. A vagina doesn't pose as a threat. Unfortunately, many men have used their penises as weapons, as demonstrations of aggressive power, etc. Yes, some women (a lot actually...and unfortunately) are ashamed of their bodies and sexuality...leading them to make disparaging comments in regards to men's bodies and their own as well. I find that highly problematic. But a number of women regard men's bodies with fear because they have been used as weapons too many times. This is actually a very complicated/complex issue.

Oh and also, not all men like looking at pussy, as not all women are into penis...just wanted to throw that out there.

Now that I have taken this joke and made it into a massive theoretical discourse....I shall step from behind the pulpit !!!! Thank you and goodnight!!!! . Again, I shall be signing autographs later!

Who decided that a penis is a "menacing reminder of womans sexual vulnerability"?

And why is it violent if a man tries to stand between or crowd her away from something that she is violently destroying?

It's gotta be said - the girls I do my shows for want to see my penis, or at least a suggestion of it.

I think the women quoted in that article are a vocal minority and need to get a life, although I do agree with the comments Athena made above about rape survivors.

I think the penis was great. If there was any snow here I would make a replica.

There was a Calvin and Hobbes strip in one of the books. The neighbor girl made a snow-woman and a frame or two later, there's the back of a snowman and Calvin's mom yelling, "I don't care what she did! You can't make an anatomically correct snowman!"

Bah, my "sexual vulnderability!?!?!" Riiiight. I am not vulnerable. I am 100% in control of my sexuality. I hate silly bizzatches like these. They aren't helping anyone.

Penises aren't "pornographic," or "offense" anymore than vaginas are. Gawd. You're boooorn with it.

Reminds me of a new story I heard a long time ago about a very young girl who scissored off her infant brother's penis. When she was asked about it, she said her Mommy told her that it was dirty. The baby brother died from blood loss.

I don't get what the fuss is about!? I swear, these days people are getting more and more prudish. Tearing that down and making a fuss over it b/c it is "dirty" is the same thing as saying everything about our bodies and sexualities is inherently dirty (evil). There's nothing wrong with the human body. It's a beautiful thing. If people would stop making a dick out of a snowhill, life would be soo much easier. I'm a lesbian chick and I can still admire a nice one.

This country was started by Puritans. Why its morals continue to be dominated by them in the non-silent minority, I do not know.

Save the liberated speeches. I get a kick out of the crowd that gets in a tiff about others being prudish, yet they're the first ones to be offended by others with a different view. Hypocrites.

Regarding "celebrating the human body," there's a time and a place for everything.
