    Default F*&#@*$ Shoes!!

    Oookay,

First, the good news - I finally received my first pair of dancer shoes!! 6 inch heel, 3 inch platform, clear w/ iradescent (sp) straps and sexy as hell. I hit the garage and the kitchen running, and found that I can walk in them without any wobble.

Now the bad news - if I fall one more time while practicing my stage dance moves in these freakin shoes, I swear I'm going throw them at my husband who thinks its the funniest thing since the Jefferson's. All this time I've been practicing little 3.5 inch shoes and boy was I Little Miss Sexy Stripper. Now that I've put on these bad boys (or girls), I can't dance to save my life!! I nearly broke my back trying to do a back bend move I had perfected in my 3.5s! I know I was warned about this, but GOOD GRIEF!!!

So ladies, I beg of you - please tell me how you got comfy in your 6 inchers (or 7, 8 inchers). Also, what music do you recommend practicing to (I mean fast, slow, both).

    All advice is mucho appreciated.

all i can really say is practice, practice, practice. the first time i ever wore platforms i had to cling onto the furniture just to walk! honestly, i really thought i'd NEVER get used to them. save the trickier moves for later when you're more comfortable in them. practice on flooring rather then carpeting. i find it's a lot harder to maintain balance on carpeting especially if it's thick. carpet can really make you slip, too (hell, i can slip on the carpet in bare feet).

as far as what music to practice to... the same kind of music you'll be dancing to whether that's slow, fast or both. i felt more comfortable practicing to slower music at first, but slower music may be harder for someone else... with slower music you'd need to be smoother and more flowing, whereas with faster music, it may be easier not to have to balance and sustain as much. for me, with faster music i may have landed on my ass practicing certain moves, but found it was easier to cover up a little slip or bobble then with slow music (but i guess that may depend on what moves you do). seeing as i could hardly walk in platforms at first, i pretty much had to start out with slower music. try both fast and slow (or a happy medium) and see what works best for you in the beginning.

besides, new shoes are stiff and require a breaking in period. i'm always a bit clumsier in a brand new pair of shoes and won't work in them until they're broken in.

don't sweat it... eventually you'll get there.

When doing back bends in tall shoes just really be aware that the floor is a whole lot further down than it is in regular shoes. You have to bend back further than your feet. Like go outside and do it off of a curb or stand on a step( if u have them at home) like the last one and do the bend and touch the floor. Ur body is afraid it will fall b/c it is extended way more than normal. I am very short like 5'2 may be 5'1 like i said short and i wear 8.5 inchers so I know about the bend thing but u'll get used to it.
As for music, listen to fast and slow. Use music that you will use at work if u can pick ur own, if not pick music the dj is likely to put u up to so u will be comfortable with fast slow and everything in between. Practice, practice, practice. Also, practicing without ur shoes is helpful too. With shoes for stage shoes and without for just simple stuff like floor work (if its allowed at ur club) or stuff that comes to u at random. I find myself in the shower practicing sexy headtosses and sexy moves. In time u'll be able to do it all and teaching other girls.

The taller the shoes, the more your center of balance is moved forward. If you practice some of your moves barefoot on tiptoe, that's what the shoes do to you. I can't wear shorter (like four inch) shoes because my weight falls in the middle of my foot instead of my toes and it puts me off balance.

How do you get to be able to do backbends anyways? I can do them from laying down, just pushing up, and I can do them when kneeling, but I can't do it from standing up. My back bends sort of farther down then the girls that I see doing backbends. So how do you do it?

Like Lena said your posture is moved forward. And everytime you go higher, you put your body in more of a difficult position. I have at times wore 7" strip shoes. What i do believe in is to strengthen the ankles. I do this by walking around my house at times on my tippy toes, and flexing and bending them in different positions. (while sitting).

Pick up pennies off the floor while you watching TV. I know this seems more for the toes, but hey it works both the toes and ankle movement. If pennies are tough at first, use something else, but something that is hard to do.

Calves are a must too! As is a strong torso, (keep your balance). It's actually not hard work, you can do a backbend, so you have already started.
I am a firm believer in ankle strength however. And posture. When wearing the heels to a club stage dancing may become easy, you have the pole to hang on to, and slips can make you look like it's all an act.
Practice at home, I don't think practicing dancing in the shoes will build ankle strength, but will help you gain control over your movements. Slow, sexy songs to start with. And feeling like a wobbly newborn deer, always keep your hands on something untill you get better, and you will, it takes time. Even if you do laps, if you can have your hands holding something. I have fallen sooo many times on stage, i blame the pole alot and me being stupid, when at times my ankle has twisted out, or i went forward.
    Good luck...Pamela

Like they said. It takes time and it's harder to balance in platforms. I couldn't use the proper stripper platforms until I'd been dancing well over a year. The problem for me was that the 6,7,8" shoes have platforms that are actually narrower than the sole of the shoe, so you have less surface to balance yourself on. Of course now I can't wear anything but the platforms, and the taller the better, so it just takes some time and practice.

Back bends are harder in higher heels because of the added bending you have to do to touch the floor, and because they throw your whole body out of normal alignment. I learned to do them with no hands by first doing it while holding the pole with one hand and reaching back with the other, then I found myself relying less and less on the pole til finally I could do it all on my own. Now I still do it by reaching back with one hand and the other hand usually going to the back of the corresponding leg until I reach the floor, then put the other hand down as well.

But really, I don't find it's necessary to do very much in the way of tricks because what really pulls the audience in is focusing on them with plenty of eye contact and little gestures that 'speak' to them. Also, as a newbie you'll have a particular draw because of the 'fresh meat' factor, and if you look tooooo professional in the beginning you could lose some of that thing that gets everyone hot for the newbie. Don't worry about it, keep practicing, and remember that it will all come in time.

Thanks for the advice ladies!! I've been walking around in these killers all weekend (breaking them in - thanks Alanna!) and Divyne, I will do the stairstep thing once I'm a little more comfy.

Lena, I started using the edge of my door as a kind of pole. I did like Bridgette described, starting with one hand on the edge. Now I can drop w/out the door, but only barefoot or in small heels - not in the 6 inchers. I do a kind of ab/back rolling move, bend my knees a bit, dip my head back and dowwwn I go.

I've been working out these little legs constantly to build, but Pamela I hadn't thought about my ankles!! I'll have to give that a try.

Also Bridgette, that's great advice about not being too experienced before my first time. I have a bad habit of always trying to walk before I can crawl. I hadn't thought about capitalizing on my "newness"!!

Thanks again ladies for all of the advice!!

my 6 inches Are not cozy at all.. infact when i take them off... My feet are screaming for mercy.. Dr scoles help out so much its not even funny..

i take cozy slipper to work that have alot of foot padding.. and i ware them when im taking a food break.. It helps me out alot.. Take your feet out every now and then and give them a good rub.. and put them in some cozy slippers...

But try to take baby steps with the back bending... you need to learn how to balance first.. like.. streching in them.. It takes a while to get use to the hight but youll get ajusted to it

You dont have to wear platforms - I have been wearing tradidtional non
platform heels since my first audition last year. i just feel I can
dance a lot better feeling the floor through the soles of the shoes
and I dont think it has held me back.
