A bath. Maybe this is b/c I don't have 1 being at school, or maybe I have always thought of theml like this, but they are the ultimate in relaxation. Candles and bubbles and wine, music helps. Sit around and stretch and relax, then take a bath and/or wash the hair then hit the sack.
I am having the opposite problem. I am having trouble sleeping, so I have to stall myself out evryday to stay awake until at least ten or eleven or i'll be up really early like around 3 and stay up all nite. I can get only between 4-6 hours max and I'm wide awake and will not go back.

Have you tried SEX ? That does it for me, sometimes I fall asleep during sex LOL Just kidding
Try a glass of wine, the chemicals in grapes induce sleep. I used to work a stressful night job (law enforcement) and had rouble unwinding after my shift. A hot shower and a glass of wine worked wonders. Stay away from the sleeping pillls, after long term use sleeping pills can keep you awake.

What really has worked for me is either some sort of herbal tea, like peppermint tea with a little milk. I hate warm milk, but in tea or coffee I can def. do it. Peppermint relaxes you, and helps you digest food better. My second, and alltime no fail cure, is melatonin. You can get it at any pharmacy, or health food store. 1 tablet 1/2 hour before bedtime and you are out like a light. The only drawback for me is having a fuzzy head for the first 2 hours, but I exercise in the morning, and it goes right away. But before proceeding with any herbal remedies, always check with your doctor, since I learned the hard way that herbal remedies can conflict, the same way pharmaeuticals can.

I do the warm bath, then read a book. Somehow for me, reading late at night makes my eyes tired and i want to go to sleep. I have tried Melatonin in the past because i was so worked up after work. But melatonin "can" put you to sleep for a few hours, but won't keep you to sleep through the night.
I still have sleepless nights, hell now i don't fight it, i get up and do something (read). I figure sooner or later my body is going to need sleep, and it does it will crash early on me, and it feels so good!

And Chuck, i went to sleep once during sex, we fell out of bed and i knocked myself out. A few seconds but hey, i was out. All night long i told him to keep waking me up to check for a concusion. Poor guy got no sleep, alarm went off every two hours. Lol.

    hahaha!

I find that I usually need 30 minutes to an hour to wind down after work. A hot shower followed by Heather_Young's advice works wonders for me.

In spite of my reputation, I NEVER get high, do any other kind of drugs, or even drink (except the very end of the night) when I work--I like a nice clear head and all verbal skills intact.

But as soon as I get home a toke or two is just what the doctor ordered. This doesn't actually make me sleepy (for some reason weed wakes me up--but I only take a few hits), but it calms me down so that later I'll be able to. Since I am a vampire and don't sleep until 6-7 AM at the earliest, this is just fine.

If I don't have weed I remain psyched up for hours and can't sleep until like 1-2 PM the next day. We DJs have to be high energy non-stop, no breaks all night, so no matter how tired you get it is hard to snap out of it. My dad and I used to do some serious partying, so sometimes when I call him, even the day after working, he'll accuse me of being all coked up, which is funny because I stopped doing that crazy shit a long time ago.

Like Pamela I read myself to sleep, in fact it is impossible for me to sleep now without reading at least a few lines. A hot bath sounds like a great way to unwind, especially with some company, LOL. Unfortunately the place I'm staying, though it's right on the river, only has a shower---time to move.

Also time for Djoser to shut up, damnit, there I go again...

I have had trouble sleeping for most of my adult life, probably because of jobs that require me to work nights which is unnatural, and really quite unhealthy. However I think I have tried every trick in the book, so maybe some of these will work for you:

I'm with Djoser and Heather_Young's suggestions.

Try cutting out caffeine about 7-8 hours before bed. Also alcohol may disrupt your sleep, belive it or not. A lot of people practice yoga and meditation before bed. Something I do that gets me right to sleep is that I have a fan or air filter machine going in my room to block out outside noises (sort of like putting a baby in a car). I also make sure that there isn't too much light in my bedroom as well.

I read something recently that blue and/or green light (like from a clock) can disturb sleep patterns. Also make sure your room is at a good sleeping (65 degrees).

I have used herbal supplements such as valerian root, kava kava, melatonin (gave me nightmares, and made me feel groggy the next day). I have also used nyquil, but that is an antihystimine, and will make me groggy for about 4-6 hours after I wake, and leave me feeling dehydrated.

Something else is the low carb diets that are so popular are also bad for sound sleep. Eating a big meal before bed will disrupt sleep so try a light meal like a bowl of soup or a turkey sandwich on wheat bread with some milk to help you get ready for bed. Going to bed hungry is bad because your body is trying to signal you to fulfill the need for nourishment, there by making it hard to sleep. I know that all the diet books say don't eat carbs before bed (or anything else for that matter) but I find that a small meal like bowl of cereal or some yogurt and toast is great just before bed.

And a really big one is STAY AWAY FROM EXTASCY. This drug destroys the body's ability to produce seratonin, the sleep hormone. I think you will be seeing a lot of ex-ravers in the next few years with some major insomnia problems.

I have other sleep tricks, if you are interested in more, but this should get you snoozing in no time at all.

    take care, Paris

I agree with XANAX...lol! However a natural approach without the aide of any perscription/over the counter drugs, I would suggest keeping a journal. I know this may seem cheesy but whether writing or recording your thoughts about your day and reflecting on it, provides great relief. I find myself releasing a lot of pent up tension that I wasn't even aware of and can hardly keep my eyes open to finish.
I have suffered from insomnia all my life especially during times of anxiety ect...maintaining a journal has helped me work through issues that cause my anxieties and depression. This provides me with an outlet that remains private but also provides the opportunity to release this burden while still reflecting on them. Also when rereading or listening to my thoughts I gain so much perspective on my actions and reactions on events that I gain self awareness that can be enpowering.
However when all else fails pop a Xanax....he-he

    Wow Paris! Great Information!

I use a homeopathic remedy called "Calm Forte" that I pick up at Wild Oats or Whole Foods markets (I've seen it almost everywhere lately, tho, including 7-11!). I try and relax and read or meditate. I also notice that if I have *any* alcohol, IF I can fall asleep, I wake up like a shot 3 hours later so I stay away from it.

Melatonin gave me nightmares and some of the herbal remedies make me groggy.

I saw Nyquil but if you have Walgreens or Walmart use their generic same stuff just no big name label and is half as cheap. Try 1 cup (that comes on top not eight ounces) and in an hour latter if still not sleepy take another. Warm milk or hot chocolate or Chamomile tea or an herb tea you like. If the problem is chroic see a Doctor and ask for either Ambien or if you don't have medical coverage Flurazepam or Trazadon. They are cheaper then Ambein. These drugs are non addictive. I miss the days of Valley of the Dolls.

I take melatonin (which I cycle) and use a sleep machine which has all kinds of sounds from nature on it (ocean waves, forest, waterfall etc.). I take my phones off the hook and wear an eye mask so the sun won't wake me before I am ready. The herb teas are good too - Celestial seasonings do one called Sleepytime tea. Some could and flu medicines haveantihistiamines in them which also do the trick. I also use aromatherapy oils sometimes (lavender, rose, frankincense, myrrhh).

I've found that the following steps will put me out in about 30 -45 minutes:

    Take a dose of Nyquil
Take a warm bath while reading a good book
Finally, drink a hot cup of Peppermint/Chamomile tea AND if necessary, a cup of chicken broth

I have to high-tail it to the bathroom in the morning, but it's worth it!!

HollyDay, I love ya, but you didn't read the whole thing---AT WORK I really don't! I have on rare occasions gotten (and was once ordered to get) high while DJing, but I get too mellow--I have a laid back DJ style anyways, compared to most--and I want to keep the guys lively, so it's not good for me, until later...

Once I get done, I'm always ready for a toke!!!

Actually... masturbation is a most enjoyable way of making oneself fall asleep..

Another way that definately works for me is a herbal suppliement called Tang Kuei. Yes, it is Herbalife. That isn't a bad word BTW... I like their suppliments esp. the TK as it helps with my sleep (just improves it.. I have no sleeping problems really) as well as allowing me to wake the next morning with less muscle sore-ness (from dancing).

    I do highly recommend it.

Melatonin. I work the graveyard shift and another guy who worked it before turned me on to it. It's natural, and it works.
    Hot baths help, too.
