    Default Rhode Island Nightclub Tragedy

Kind of something to think about for dancers, club employees, and customers alike, whether you're at work or out with your friends at another type of nightclub.

I've been watching coverage of the horrible nightclub fire in Rhode Island Thursday night (96 dead so far as possibly more may succumb to their injuries) and I've kind of been thinking about my situation when I'm at the strip club. Until something like this happens, you tend to take things like fire codes and emergency exits for granted.

While the potential of a fire from pyrotechics at a strip club isn't likely, there could be a number of other sources where a fire could start (electrical, kitchen, nutcase with a molotov cocktail).

The club you're at could be made of the same ramshackle construction materials and that a full blown inferno could develop in seconds. Do take into consideration that you're in a poorly lit environment that may also have mirrored walls which can be difficult to navigate under normal conditions. Throw in some acrid black smoke and finding your way out may be next to impossible. When were out to have a good time, we're not always thinking the best of our safety, particularly when we get a little alcohol in our systems.

I just urge everybody here to take precautions, whether at work, or out having a good time with your friends and make yourself aware of how you're going to evacuate the premises should the unthinkable occur. Many of the people killed Thursday night died trying to cram through the only exit they knew about.

Find out where those back exits are. Inquire with management if you're unsure. Nobody needs to lose their life under those circumstances.

Wow...so many nightclub tragedies have occurred in recent days! First Chicago, then Rhode Island, and now I just learned that a club in Minneapolis was destroyed by pyrotechnics, although I don't know how many people were injured or killed. A stampede occurred in a Chicago nightclub this past week when security decided to use pepper spray in the packed club (???) to break up a fight, and everyone tried to cram through one door-the only one available to exit through. Many people died there also- 26, I believe...

I hope that club owners will install sprinkler systems and take all possible precautions in order to prevent senseless, terrible things like this from happening, be they due to fire shows, electrical, Molotovs, whatever. I agree that it's important to familiarize yourself with ways to be safe if and when a situation arises.

I agree that an actual risk of fire is an issue with many clubs, particularly clubs in older buildings, clubs not on the ground floor etc. However, there is a much larger risk which will stem from these night club incidents which may not be immediately apparent.

The Chicago incident has already started a legal argument in regard to how much liability the City of Chicago will bear by not inspecting and not closing down that club. Rhode Island will very likely wind up having the same thing happen. Lawyers smell big money in wrongful death lawsuits, and city and state governments have lots "deeper pockets" than club owners. To protect themselves from a repeat of these tragedies, or more specifically to limit their liability in future lawsuits stemming from a repeat of these tragedies, I am absolutely certain that city governments will very quickly begin paying a lot more attention to night clubs, as well as dance clubs, or any other public establishment which is likely to draw large crowds in a small space at night.

This is going to mean city "inspectors" popping into clubs much more frequently, with the role of "inspector" probably falling to the local cops! Hey, as long as they're there, why not check the VIP rooms, right ?

This is going to put pressure on clubowners to make a ton of expensive improvements to their club to comply with local codes. The result of this will be one of two possibilities, either the clubowner will decide it's too expensive and close down, or the clubowner will attempt to recoup some of the money needed for the expensive improvements any way he can i.e. higher stage fees, higher splits of private dance money etc.

The increased presence of local cops "inspecting" clubs will also put a damper on business.

This is one very important issue i as an employee at a local hospital had to take a class for. And a refresher course every year. It is mandatory for employees at hospitals. All exits, fire exits or not, can save your life. The first thing we are taught is not to panic. Easier said than done. However i still feel for all involved at the concert and others.
I frequent alot of clubs in my area, and it is not rare to have a door man who has a head count. when the club is filled, people have to wait outside. When say, 3 people leave 3 more can enter. But thats how it works. Pamela

interesting point, dr_c - we frequently have feature dancers that use fire - some of them only a fire baton here and there, and one particular feature (can't remember her name) that has quite a big fire show - with flaming pans setup on stage (about 4 of them) and torches on about 5 places of her body- I've also noticed that she does not travel with an assistant - Our ceilings are high, but not particularly high when considering that she makes the pans "poof" up in flames with some liquid. (I'm not using the right pyro technological terms, I'm sure , so bear with me)... anyway, we only have 2 exits that I know of, and our club is narrow - makes you a bit nervous when hearing these club stories... :-/

Very sad about what happened in Chicago and RI. Here in Raleigh they started checking all nightclubs for possible fire violations. Heard The Foxy Lady in Providence lost 2 dances and a DJ in the fire. My thoughts and prayers are with everybody that lost a love one in these tragic events.

Foxy lost 2 dancers. They have a DJ from the radio station, (WHJY) who was there ( and worked doing promos at the Foxy).

Weird thinking that 6 months ago I head my supervisor saying he goes there. (I'm 40 mins away). Atleast the comapny moved, so I'm pretty sure he wasn't there.

My prayers goes for t he lost lives in Rhode Island and Chicago. In a situation like this, people tends to panic and try to push other people out of the way just to get to the exit forgetting about their friends or family that may be on the floor being stomped on.

That have made me think about my safetly because we all dancers wear high heels and cannot or can run fast enough to get to the exit when something happens like that. We have a big club a two story club and dancers wont be able to get down the stairs without falling. And to thing if somone is on the floor, a dancer could accidently stomp him/her with her dancer shoes. Ouch! that gotta hurt.

Dr_ catfish is right. We dont think about our safety rather than too busy having fun. I hope all employees and dancers would have something to think about in a club when something like this happen.
