Between the busts and the dancer's union organizing ...

    Let's hope the appeal works.

    Police Raid Sapphires

    by: Company Press Release

(LAS VEGAS, NV) -- Emboldened by the sweeping new powers given them by the county's lap dance ordinance, Metro Police last night staged an all-out raid at Sapphires Gentleman's Club, citing nearly 15 women for a variety of alleged offenses. One woman, a real estate agent from Texas, was cited for "allowing a customer to touch her buttock."

Choking back tears and speaking on condition of anonymity she told LVDA, "The officer grabbed me, I removed his hand and told him 'No,' but he wouldn't leave me alone. Then he informed me I was being charged with a misdemeanor. I'd never even gotten a speeding ticket before this. If someone like me can get into trouble, it can happen to anyone. My customer vowed never to return to Las Vegas." Following the conversation, Las Vegas Dancers Alliance immediately contacted the District Attorney's office and asked them to investigate.

Commenting on the raid, Andrea Hackett, President/Secretary-Treasurer of the Las Vegas Dancers Alliance said, "At a time of heightened security, at a time when the budget axe is falling on every social service, at a time when ever police officer in the valley is needed to fight real crime, METRO Police are wasting tax dollars terrifying women and driving visitors away from Las Vegas.

Thanks to Yvonne Atkinson-Gates we now have an ordinance that gives police the power to charge dancers and their customers for the most innocent and casual contact. How long will it be before the vacationing public decides to take their dollars somewhere else?"

Las Vegas Dancers Alliance plans to file an initiative on March 18th to repeal the lap dance ordinance in Clark County.

how true, it just sickens me that they are wasting all this time and money trying to legislate the activity of consenting adults, especially considering all the other problems out there.

Sapphires from what I'm told (and if I'm wrong, someone more familiar with the area please correct me) actually is in unincorporated Clark County, although it is litterally within a stones throw of the Strip, (go figure). Therefore it is subject to the new lap dance restrictions imposed last Summer as opposed to clubs like the Cheetah, OG, and Crazy Horse 2 (which I think is just a few blocks down the same street!) that reside inside Las Vegas city limits and are subject to more relaxed rules.

Generally in most locations, clubs are pushed OUT of a city to work under more relaxed regulations, so the confusion a lot of people have with the almost opposite situation in Vegas is understandable.

I've have heard rumors about that since the club is on land contiguous with LV city limits that the owner (and the onwer of Jaguars, another club in a similar predicament) is trying to get it annexed into the city. Understandably, the CC commisioners probably aren't too happy about that since that would rob them of the tax revenue that the club generates. Yet these are the same boneheads who passed the ordinance that has led to the metro police going on this reign of terror, so go figure!

I am planning to visit Vegas this Summer and I hope that the tourism officials out there realize that badgering people how to spend (or not spend) their money when they visit is NOT a good way to keep tourists coming back. If anything, its a bonafide way to chase them away PERMANENTLY.

If I simply want to hit a casino, there are indian casinos upstate and riverboats in IA and MO waiting for me. I go to Vegas for the "Vegas experience", which simply isn't complete without a few trips to the local strip clubs (well that and a greasy Mega Dog with chili and cheese from the Westward Ho snack bar).

If the powers that be out there are going to deny me that opportunity, then I can elect to take my vacation elsewhere. I'm sure a lot of guys who go to Vegas, whether it be for business or pleasure, would agree that it would be a consideraby less fun place to go if they couldn't stop in and have a lap dance or two.

In any case, the Convention and Vistors authority should have a word with the county commisioners that when the local five-o is engaging in raids:

    - which purpose is PURELY political
    - that do little if NOTHING to protect the public
    - that deplete valuable police manpower from things that
DO threaten the public (tourists included),
    - and that help chase away LAW ABIDING tourists

...that everybody, the clubs, the casinos, the airlines, the shuttle and taxi services, ALL SUFFER.

I wish the LVDA girls well and hope they fight this outrageous stupidity to the death.

Yeah, Vegas is trying to once again market itself as an adult playground with all the new commercials, and some of the dumbass local officials are trying to tone things down. Stupid political bs aimed at rounding up votes from the old folks, which winds up benefitting no one (esp the old fogies who do most of the voting but rarely if ever venture into a club), but hurts the people working or trying to have fun in the clubs.

Apparently another club took a hit. CH2 was raided yesterday. Pretty scary since it was a compilation of not one but three LE agencies who came in bearing machine guns.

The incident was not an ordinary bust. I expect to see some exodus of girls from the club.

Possible mob connections. Seems like a completely different type of raid indeed Chet. The feds aren't going to get involved over a few dancers grinding a little too hard.

Perhaps its time for the authorities out there to start an ownership blacklist for strip club ownership similar to the one that the casinos have.

Yeah, right! I sure hope that an "organized crime" club ownership blacklist never becomes a reality. If it does, more than half of the clubs on the east coast will be history!

From what I understand, there is heavy rivalry at work between competing club owners in Vegas, with one group of club owners now using law enforcement agencies as pawns to cause grief for the other group. These clubowners can see the handwriting on the wall resulting from the new California dance club laws, which should make Vegas club business a gold mine again in the near future once all the ramifications of the new California law have time to percolate through California clubs, CA local governments, CA state tax dep't etc.

Also from what I understand, the city government in Vegas had latched on to the stupid idea that if they could "clean up" the Vegas image and market Vegas as a "family vacation spot" that it would help recoup some of the tourist losses. However, it didn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that no husband/wife wants to bring their kids along with them to Vegas - hell the husbands don't even want to bring their wives! The real appeal of Vegas has always been as an "anything goes" town. Unfortunately, the law enforcement wheels had been set in motion and can't be stopped.

So the end result will likely be that Vegas is becoming a town where "anything" no longer goes. This means that the families will still go to Disney World, and the guys and girls looking for "anything goes" action will take their business elsewhere as well.

I'm sure the casino owners are more than happy to agree with you.

After all, they have a lot to gain with the recent raids considering, for years, they've been blaming the stripclubs for taking tourist money away from their business. Hotels such as the Riviera have tried to counter by putting shows like Crazygirls which mimick the stripclub shows in hope of getting some business back. Some have comedic shows that emulate what goes on between dancers and customers in a stripclub. Also, it's no surprise that the hotel owners were the biggest campaign contributers that helped catapult Goodman on the mayoral seat;hence, it explains the passing of the new Vegas laws last year.

I believe Rizzolo (CH2) tried to contribute to Goodman's campaign last year as he's done in the past with politicians, but it was rejected to no surprise. The political coffer has found a bigger donor.

Almost 2 years later, the law gets repealed. Meanwhile, in the meantime, Las Vegas survived.

    Vegas will always be Vegas.

They tried going after families about 5-7 yrs ago and soon learned that was a mistake.
