Default Newbie - lots of questions

Hi everyone. I've been reading this forum for about a month now, and I love it.

I'm an independent contractor in the tech industry, and I'm really burned out. My contract's up this week, so I thought this would be a good time to try something new and take a break from tech. Stripping sounds like a lot of fun, a good change, and a way to learn some new skills (people skills, self-confidence, and so on), while still making good money. It also fits my super-flirty personality well.

First off, how do you like the name Datura? I'm trying it on for a bit. My husband thinks it's really cool, but I think it's a bit pretentious and complicated and maybe too goth to be generally pleasing.

Secondly, I'm bad at being a girl - computer science does that to a person. I have only the smallest clue about makeup and hair, so where can I learn these things? I've already got some books on hold at the library, but are there better resources? Would I have a good chance of finding a stripper to mentor me with this? If you have specific books you like, please recommend them.

And lastly, I'm in Austin. I know there are a few Austin girls on this board, so what are your favorite clubs to work in? Do you have any suggestions for working in this town? Where do you buy shoes and clothes here?

Thank you in advance, and thanks for being such a nice group of people!

    Datura

    Join the club!

Before I started dancing (and still to this day) I consider myself tomboy-ish and not a "girl" at all!

Then again, you are right in that being a dancer has taught me some valuable life-long lessons and some skills which were previously under-developed/used.

It taught me about my sexuality and about sensuality.. about being a "girl". It taught me interpersonal skills.. so now I can walk into a room full of strangers and initiate conversation .. hence improved my self-confidence. It has taught me about sales.

As for make-up... the way I learnt was by going into a major department store's "make up and perfume" counter section and get my face made up by one of the counterwomen. This showed me which colours to use.

Also with foundation ... go a shade darker than you would normally use during the day since you will be in a generally not well lighted environment.

I'm pretty simple as far as make-up goes: foundation, lipstick (anything "long stay"), eye shadow. Sometimes I use mascara as I have naturally thick eye lashes anyway.

As for a stage name... here is a trick a few dancers at where I work use: use a stage name that starts with the same first letter of your real name.

For example: Real name is Renee... stage name is Rachel. It doesn't have to fancy your stage name or you could go with something that is unusual such as Destiny, Crystal, etc.

Also... if you find it isn't for you in the end... do not be disheartened. Some people THINK they can do it.. and when reality sinks in find out that they can't... happens everyday.

I love the name Datura! I think it's cool that you'd want to choose a name that you don't hear everyday in a strip club. There are a million Candy's and Brandi's and Tiffany's and yes there are a bunch of Kitty's too and Kat and Kitten and everything else. If you do decide to go with a more general stripper name, try to think of a last name to go with it and maybe spell it a little differently. Since there are so many Kitty's out there, I decided to change the spelling and add a last name. So my performing name is Kittie Hawthorne.

    Just a suggestion.

Anything you can do to make yourself stand out a little and get the guys to notice you is a good thing.

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement, everyone.

My husband and I have gone to several clubs already, scoping the atmosphere and talking to the girls. Most of them seem very honest about whether or not they like working there. We will be hitting a new one for lunch next week, just to get more ideas.

AussiVee: Yes! One of the "skills" I didn't list that would be great to learn is "how to be a girl!" It just sounded too pathetic to put in my list. Also, how to own a room upon walking in, just like you said.

I'd forgotten about going to the makeup counter to learn. I'll definitely do that next week.

The great news is that I met a stripper at a party last night and told her I was thinking of dancing, and she offered to get together with me and show me some moves and help me out on clothes and stuff. Yay, a friend!

I'm really excited about this. I'm already a sexual creature, a big flirt, and comfortable being naked in front of people (it's Austin, after all - lots of chances for nudity around here), so I really don't see dancing as being that far off from what I already love to do/be (with the exception of the 6" heels). I've done tech for a while, and now I get to explore another side of myself. If I don't break my ankle, I think it'll be a fun job.

    Thanks again, y'all.

Since I'm a big Tori Amos fan, I do love the name Datura
However, in my experience, I found that when I change my name to something more memorable and 'common' , I had more customers asking for me personally, rather than them asking for "that exotic-looking-girl with dark hair who has an unusual name that starts with the letter 'k', i think". Then again, for the guys with good memories, Datura is very memorable. Just make sure the DJ pronounces it right!!

Good luck sweetie - you've got a great 'tude and good support from your hubby, you'll do great!

NYCJacqueline, that's exactly what I was worried about - customers not remembering my name.

One of the first rules of sales is have a memorable product, something the common folk can pronounce and understand.

I'm gonna think on it some more.

    Thanks, y'all.
