    Default License

I posted this question before, but since then I have received mixed responses. Is it true that a dance license is public record? If an employer in the future does a background check - will this come up? A dancer responded that if you are not planning to be in the business permanently to not leave a paper trail. In this particular city to work you have to get a license. I only plan on staying in the business about 4-6 more months. But i have heard earning potential at this "must have a license club" is 1000 a night.

I cant vouch for your city or its bylaws, but yes, there is a papertrail and the information is available via the information act. Some cities call it a business license, like a cab driver and yes you are on record. Anytime you put to paper any information that is officially filed for later reference or cross referencing you of course- leave a paper trail. However you can always say you got the license req'd to work but never did work because this job just wasnt for you or whatever. They cant prove otherwise - UNLESS your club photocopies and keeps on file or records your lic# every night you come into work. Many clubs just want to see it and hand it back and let you go on your merry way.
    Good luck.

Never explain yourself to anyone, because the person who likes you doesn't need it and the person that dislikes you won't believe it.

You are correct. It is called a business license in this city. Im sure the club does not make copies every night, but they def do photocopy my information, drivers license, etc before i start working (after audition) but every club that i have ever worked at has photo copied my info. I called the city dept of issuance, and they said that the only way someone can find out is if they call the records dept of the city. Cant you just put something completely different down. example - entertain at childrens birthday parties(i heard this used on this site before) Im trying to find out as much information as I can before I get this licence. The club sends tax info in on you....so in a background check if i weer to ay that i have not worked, could the background check proove otherwise?

It's not the records that the dance club keeps that will come back to haunt you. Think about it ... in order for a prospective employer to check a dance club, he would already have to know that you were a dancer. The real risk is the record of your dancer's license with the city or county. These become part of official government public records, and it is these records which are the first place that prospective future employers, P.I.'s, divorce lawyers etc. will check. And most cities and counties do spell out that you are the holder of a DANCER's license. Vegas is an exception since it lumps together dance clubs, casino shows etc under the same heading of entertainer's license. Sunshyne's city must be an extreme exception since it apparently lumps together all sorts of businesses under the same license.

There's also another risk associated with dancer's licenses besides investigations by future employers, child protective services etc. The IRS finds that dancer's license records are a very "fertile" place to start when deciding who to audit.

melonie - Do you have a license?

Something to add....if someone wanted to look into your records - they would have to know where to look. So, if you had a license from New York, and you move to Texas...the employers in Texas may look for your records in Dallas, but why would they even think to look in NY?

Correct me if Im wrong, but if you register your business license to say you are a massage therapist (you can write down any business you choose) even if child services, employers see it, what is wrong with massage therapist?

I have several licenses, because I frequently travel to dance or feature in different cities and a few of the better earnings opportunity cities require them. But I do NOT have a license from any New York city, because I live in New York I don't want any local records to turn up in a routine check by a prospective employer, family court etc. Most investigations will never expand beyond a girl's home state unless they have some compelling reason to do so (like applying for a job with the FBI, an airport security screener, trying to be admitted to the Bar after obtaining a Juris Doctor degree etc.) or unless somebody with an axe to grind (i.e. an ex-husband trying to get out of paying support) tells the investigators where to look.

In your own rare case where a "business license" is involved, you don't risk the automatic assumption the same way other girls would in other cities where it says "dancer's license". If you're free to put down any type of business you want to, I'd think of something less subject to misinterpretation than "masseuse" though - most tightassed straightlaced investigations could interpret that as being worse than dancing based on the Hollywood Stereotype of "massage parlors" being whorehouses!

I had a feeling you were going to say something about the massage therapist comment. What do you suggest I write instead? Do they only investigate lawyers?.....or does this go for any PHD?

Is it worth it to get a license for 2 nights a week, for the next few months, or should i just look for a different club?

any applicant for a position of "trust" is going to be thoroughly investigated. Here I'm talking about a professional who has to deal with the law, the government, other people's money, other people's bodies or minds, other people's children etc. If your PhD is in "fine arts" nobody is going to do much investigating, but if you're thinking of becoming a lawyer, cop, teacher, politician, doctor, nurse, stockbroker, accountant etc. the investigation is liable to be very thorough.
