At Kintera, a San Diego-based provider of software, efforts to reduce travel costs include manager approval of trips and the use of hotels with free phone or Internet. Employees (must now) book tickets (and pay expenses) on their own credit cards, and are then reimbursed, so they are more accountable for travel costs (and expenses).
Even CEO Harry Gruber tries to set an example. "I make sure the trip is as full as possible, with meetings every hour, and I try to avoid eating," he says."
