    Default Puerto Rico Layover

We'll be travelling through Puerto Rico this winter. Are there any Strip Bars within a short taxi ride from the airport in a safe area? Need bar names and any preferred english speaking taxi drivers, or should we just catch whatever taxi we can get at the airport. Better yet, are there any that allow amatures to dance. May have a few hours to spend there. Are the bars more frequented by locals or travellers?

Also, if we were to spend a few days there what area would be closest to a good beach AND some good Strip bars? Suggestions anyone?

    Thanks!.

I've heard of Divas, and Papa Joes, but I'm not sure where exactly they are... Try www.stripclublist.com and choose international clubs.

    good luck

Divas is about a 10 min taxi ride from the airport, depending on traffic (if traffic is bad it can take 1/2 hour). I have worked there since July 2002 - nice club, nicest in PR, most people who work there speak English. Girls are mixed - locals, American, Canadian, others. We are just going into busy season (winter), and we tend to get more girls at that time. If you're going to stay for a few days and want to stay near a beach AND a club, Divas is your place. It is located in Condado, the main tourist area of San Juan, right across the street from the beach - certainly not the best beach in PR but pretty nice by American standards. There are plenty of nice hotels along the same avenue, as well as smaller guest houses. Accommodations in this area are expensive. Everything in Condado is within walking distance and it's safe to walk there at all hours. I live here! Another nice area, with a nicer beach, nearby is Isla Verde - about 10 minutes from Divas. If the quality of the beach is important, I recommend staying in Isla Verde if you want to still be near the clubs. There are also some nice 'regular' nightclubs in Isla Verde. Our club customers are mainly the more affluent locals and American tourists and business travellers.

I can recommend an English-speaking taxi driver I've known since I moved here, who is pretty reliable and isn't a rip-off artist, when you get here.

There are other strip clubs near Divas, not as nice, I can't say which you'd like best without knowing your definition of a 'good' strip club. Of course I always recommend Divas, and I'm happy to entertain!

    Thanks Brigette!!!

Divas sounds perfect. We'll be going through on a Monday, high season....January. what are the club hours on Mondays? Pleeeeease don't say it's closed on Mondays!!! I've got more questions but I'm pressed for time right now. I'll be back with more questions like where can we stash a couple of carry-ons for a few hours.............this trip it's just a layover before heading north.

Thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!! [cheers]....did I say thanks

All the clubs in PR are only open at night. Most open around 9ish. Divas opens at 8pm, but we don't normally start dancing until 9-9:30, depending on when we have customers. On Mondays we close at 4am. If you are just on a layover, you could bring your carryons to the club, ask for the manager (Pablo), tell him you're just in town for a few hours until your next flight, and he'll take care of it. Offer him a few bucks tip - he probably won't take it, but anyway.... He runs a tight ship and your bags will be safe with him. When you're ready to go he'll get them back to you.

Also, if you're coming in from the airport, the taxi system there goes like this: You get outside and find the taxt stand, get in line, and tell the attendant where you're going. If you're going to Divas, tell him Ashford Avenue in Condado, and the attendant will give you a paper with the flat taxi rate indicated which you give to the driver. The rate should be around $15, and they usually charge like 50 cents per bag for luggage. You don't need to worry about getting a certain driver from the airport - rates from the airport are set by area by the taxi commission, so you'll be charged the same no matter what.

If you want to eat, none of the clubs in PR serve food, so stop at a restaurant first. Some places I like in Condado are: Yerba Buena, Jardin de Mineya (mexican), Red Snapper (seafood), Wasabi (sushi), Cherry Blossom (japanese), De Aqui y De Alla (excellent local and international). All those restaurants are on Ashford Avenue and within walking distance of Divas. If you get dropped off at one of those, your waiter can direct you to Divas.

Ok I'm really starting to sound like a tour guide now! LOL Maybe I should start a PR tour biz! Actually I've thought about that quite a bit....

If you need other info, just ask.

    Hi Again!!

All the clubs in PR are only open at night.
Sorry to say we've got an afternoon layover. Seems I should have asked the "hours" question first. My mistake for assuming the clubs would be open. You've really given me some good info though and it won't go to waste, Ive pasted your reply into my travel info folder. We go through PR at least once a year. Great tips on the resturants, the food we've had at the airport is really really bad.

Hey, go for it.....you've got alot of knowledge about a very popular destination. Travelling is SO much easier when you get first hand info from someone who lives where you're going. Tips about the taxis and Pablo at the club are invaluable!!!

Take a look at http://www.traveltalkonline.com/ It's a pretty good board for travel to the Caribbean, mostly friendly people over there much like this board. They don't have a specific PR forum but so many people travel through PR, questions come up all the time. I sure they couldn't have helped with my question though. :o... They usually reccomend an afternoon in old San Juan.....that may be alot of fun but it is a totally different experience than Divas I'm sure.

Ah well, too bad. But at least you'll have some ideas in case you decide to stop over in PR for longer than a few hours! ]

I've been thinking seriously about the tour guide thing for a while. It's something I really think I'd like to do later on....
