The clubs are "The Artist Cafe", "Casbah" and "Don Juan's" (a new club).

Mardi Gras is a very busy time of year for all these clubs in New Orleans.

He's right most clubs in New Orleans, esp. in the Quarter employ two to three times the normal amount of dancers during Mardi Gras than they usually employ. I've been to the Artist's Cafe, which is off Bourbon, I haven't been in the other two, but Artist struck me as a Dive Bar, reminded me of the Ba-Da-Bing on the Sopranos.

    Hi Doorman,

Would it be worth it (or even possible) to just come down for a few days? When is Mardi Gras anyways?

Mardi Gras day is Tuesday March 4. I've never heard really anything about those clubs, but then I'm not in the business I just live in New Orleans.

Mardi Gras is about three weeks long ending on March 4th this year. Fat Tuesday precedes Ash Wednesday. The last five days rocks the town with wall to wall people in the French Quarter. If you can't handle crowds - stay home. The money pours in. It's crazy.

You can work for one night, or 3 weeks if you like. Some stay until Jazz Fest in Spring.

There are roughly 25 dance clubs in the French Quarter (a square mile entertainment district). The finest would probably be Scarlett Cabaret. That's directly across Bourbon St from us at Casbah. All of these clubs are garanteed to get rich for Mardi Gras.

Well, not to be offensive, but the clubs mentioned by doorman are major dives. Nasty and tiny. There ARE tons of tourists in New Orleans (like 2 million) during Mardi Gras, but I've found it's generally best to avoid working at peak time, especially the last week or so because it's mostly a bunch of drunk college kids who drove in from places like Boise and Tuscaloosa with no money. Lots of them wind up sleeping in their cars, the park, or people's yards because they can't afford rooms and/or didn't plan ahead. I prefer to just enjoy the party for Mardi Gras - too much bs to try to work.

If you travel to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, be prepared to NEVER find parking anywhere near the French Quarter (which is where most of the action is) and get lost in some serious crowds.... and don't even try to maneuver on Bourbon Street during the last few days. The streets are literally so packed from wall to wall that trying to get through is like trying to swim in a can of sardines. If you drive in, you won't be able to bring your car into the French Quarter because they block it off to everyone except locals who have a special sticker. Taxis will be hard to get, and it's generally a pain in the ass to get around town during Mardi Gras. But the party can be LOADS of fun.

What I'd do: Go now and work the next two weeks, party for the last few days of Mardi Gras - it's all out in the streets and all the parades are free. Then go back to work AFTER Mardi Gras day (Fat Tuesday, March 4 this year) and work all the way through Jazz Fest (last week of April and first week of May). Last year after Mardi Gras through the end of Jazz Fest I banked like a maniac - had a few 1000+ nights and a couple 2000 nights. This is convention season, and some of those conventions bring assloads of cash - especially the insurance and financial ones. But rooms are hard to come by now, so if you want to go you better get booking!

For clubs to work in: Avoid any that advertise for dancers for Mardi Gras - there are so many girls coming in to work this season that any club worth a hoot does NOT need to advertise for dancers. The best clubs are Rick's (best potential, most business consistently, often has a line of people out the door and into the street trying to get in) and Gold Club (nice, more local, regular features, good business). I've heard nothing but bad about Larry Flynt's Hustler Club, so I wouldn't even bother with that one (was a nice club years ago before Flynt bought it, but way run down now). Temptations is another wannabe show club, but it's poorly run and I never liked it. The only other club I'd recommend besides Rick's and Gold Club is Big Daddy's - more of a neighborhood type place but right on Bourbon and catches some tourists, not as much potential as the others but WAY better than Artist Cafe, Casbah and the like. I've had a couple friends who worked at Big Daddy's, and they did ok.

I'm from New Orleans, and spent the better part of my dancing years there, so I can pretty much answer anyone's questions about working there. Feel free to ask.

Been to Mardi Gras with my ex, i was not impressed with the strip clubs there. I thought they looked dirty, lower class. (that is not meant to be rude, but i like a cleaner club, with a crowd of older guys.)

I won't be going back, i did not dance, but everyone was SO drunk and laughing in the clubs, the girls were like elbow to elbow, and i did not see much action. Only in one club ALOT of girls all over the stage. Doing whatever.
I guess it was not for me.

Ladies, also keep in mind that the Men's Final Four will be in New Orleans on April 5th and 7th. I'm sure most of the hotels in the area are full, but they normally require that people stay four nights (April 4th through the 8th). I've been to three Final Fours in San Antonio ('98 ), Indianapolis ('00), and Atlanta ('02). They are extremely fun. I originally had access to two tickets to this year's Final Four in New Orleans, but I gave them up for four tickets to one of the Regional Championships in San Antonio the week before (travel costs are much, much lower). Of course, there's always the FF in San Antonio in 2004! Woo hoo!

I have tix to the FF this year and am planning on working around it - between the coaches' conference and the tourist money I'm sure it'll be a blast. Even more so if my beloved Longhorns make it there!

Now that would have been funny if we had both been there. As for your beloved Horns...they should be in the South Regional that's playing in SA. Unfortunately I don't think they'll make it past SA!!! Maybe we could have a friendly wager...

Sorry, somebody else take this back on-topic please.

The Final Four brings a great crowd. They have money, manners and like to have fun. Not the type of volume business that Mardi Gras brings.

Bridgette is right about the type of clients that are in town for Mardi Gras actually there are some high rollers in town also. But ALL of the clubs cater to the same crowds during Mardi Gras. Anyone should make a 1000+ during the peak. In any club on Bourbon.

But you really should limit your comments to what you have personal experience with Bridgette. If you never worked during Mardi Gras or never worked at Casbah... why bash it? It's no different than Big Daddy's. There are 5 "Exclusive" Gentleman's Clubs within 6 blocks of each other. What's so exclusive about that? The other 20 clubs still get the same customers and girls when the day is done in New Orleans.

Regarding Doorman's comments: I've been in most of the clubs in New Orleans, at least as a customer, and have known people who worked in most, so I have a clue what I'm talking about. Girls make 1000+ at Casbah? LOL! Maybe 1000 between ALL the girls on the shift! The review I was giving of clubs was accurate of what I've seen. I don't rate Hustler, Temptations, Big Daddy's or any clubs in New Orleans other than Rick's and Gold Club as exclusive, period. Some may try to look exclusive, but they are not. Period. I was giving info for girls who might want to work in NO during this next few weeks of busy season, according to the experience I have there. I find it really hard to believe a dancer can consistently make 1000+ on any night at any club in NO besides Rick's or Gold Club, without doing ALOT of extras of course. Many many nights, I have walked onto the floor at Rick's at midnight and walked out at 2am with 500-1000, without doing a single extra. I am sure that can't be said about your clubs. And no, Casbah and Artist Cafe are hardly the same as Big Daddy's. I've seen chicks with missing and black teeth in both Casbah and Artist Cafe. Big Daddy's has at least some standards! And no, those other clubs most certainly do NOT get the same girls as Rick's or Gold Club.

I did not say I've never worked Mardi Gras week. I said I've found it's best to avoid working that week because the crowd is more of a pain in the butt than anything else for the dancers. I'm sure all the clubs make great money selling drinks to the drunk college kids, but the girls have a hard time selling $20 dances to a bunch of drunk kids who can't even afford a place to sleep that night! And high rollers, yeah Mardi Gras brings in some high rollers, but most of them are not in the strip clubs for the same reasons I don't work that week anymore - they prefer to go somewhere they can enjoy a good party rather than fight a huge crowd of obnoxious teenagers puking and pissing in the street, and since they're high rollers they can get into just about any party they want.

Regarding Pamela's comments, yes most of the clubs in NO are pretty crappy, including the ones doorman talks about. They do NOT get the same customers as Rick's and Gold Club - at least not the same dollars. I can't count the number of times I've been working at Rick's and had guys express how relieved they were to find that club after making the mistake of venturing into one of the many other clubs on Bourbon. I'm sure many folks who first try one or two of the dives on Bourbon with hawkers out front would shy away from trying other clubs in the vicinity, since those dives are rather frightening to most average strip club customers. But Rick's and Gold Club are both nice clubs with good money-making potential, and the girls can make really good money there without having to take 'limo rides' with customers who pay the club $75 or $100, or any other such nonsense that goes on in the 20-something other clubs in the French Quarter.

So, I do recommend that any ladies considering going to New Orleans to work this season, do so, but go to the right clubs, and be ready to hustle because the good clubs do have tons of girls, but there's also tons of money for those who aren't shy about approaching customers. It is definitely not for the faint of heart or those who get discouraged easily. It is high hustle but also high dollars.

    Love and money to all!

bridgette is right on in her comments. I have been a life long resident and customer of all clubs in NOLA. It is good of you to alert the girls what to expect in the Big EAsy.

I agree to disagree. While I went on record to say that I believed those places to be dives, and while I agree all opinions are noted and welcome. I must agree with Doorman and stick my neck out for one simple thing. Competing is hard, especially in a saturated market. I can understand his wanting to recruit for the busy season. And, with so many people & dancers the playing field does somewhat even out. I don't think we should criticise his establishments or his hiring practice. I think we should be more helpful to him.

Bridgette I know hearing me say that will surprise you most of all, but let me explain my reasoning.

First, I feel owners should do whatever need be to fill their quota to offer the customer a good experience (within reason and legality). I also feel that this thread is focused on Mardi Gras which, as you know, has no bearing on the rest of the year as far as how the clubs really are. Therfore we should avoid discussing the rest of the year.

Second, You can spot a dive whenyou walk in and most pros won't work there, and they won't have problems getting a job anywhere else. So if they came to work at Hole in the Ground Strip Club and they decide they don't like it, they can go to Fancy Gentleman's Club down the road no problem. And if all else fails they'll have fun.

Third, this is just a resource, a knowledge base so that others may voice their opinions and what-not, so there I respect your opinion and for the most part agree. But we're all here for information and to help one-another.Maybe I'm too nice a guy but I feel we should all be more helpful. After all, every city has it's bad points but this thread is starting to look like "Hey Avoid New Orleans except for Mardi Gras." And I, personally, just don't dig that. In Fact, I PREFER New Orleans when it's the off-season, It's just a great city (shameless home-town plug, lol).

Fourth, Dive bar's are necessity. Yes, they brandish the name of decent clubs. Yes, they give the industry as a whole a bad name. But if there were no dives, we'd have chaos. After All, There has to be a place to go for the people you don't want in your club. Thank You.

A girl who I know has been giving me the 411 on the New Orleans scene nightly.

She went on a friends request there last week and gor hired at the Gold Club. She says besides friday night last week which had torrential rains and no customers, she has made after tip outs $250 several times and $420 saturday and a VIP customer of $300 on Sunday plus several other dances.

She says if the club books your room for you you get a discount if you want to stay close by.

She also says she like Temptations.

Her girlfriend who has been there for about a month at Gold Club says she has been hitting $250-$400 most nights with a few bad nights mixed in.

I trust her. She is honest about money. They do have some good business customers there she says.

Well vip77, I agree with what you're saying, but I guess maybe I should clarify a bit. I don't think I was saying avoid NO except for Mardi Gras. No way, but strictly speaking of opportunities for dancers to make money, Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest season is overall the best time in my experience. Most travelling dancers aren't interested in working the dives, and they aren't interested in working any off-season or periods when the business mainly consists of crazy-drunk nonspenders. I was using that as a starting point for making my statements and recommendations.

I love New Orleans and always will! But I feel compelled to give my honest opinions and as much info as I can in the context of dancer opportunity and potential business on this site. If we're just talking about the city in general or the industry in general, well that's different!

It is also important to note that dancer income in NO can fluctuate very very drastically. I've had countless weeks where one night I went in and made 0 (or even negative), then the next made 1000, then the next made 300, then 450, then 100, then 700. That was a very typical week for me, and even though it really sucks to walk out with nothing or less than what I walked in with some nights, the overall average was still pretty damn good. 2500 or so in 6 days isn't bad. I believe Tina's references to what her friend is making at Gold Club - that is a good club with good potential, but in my experience the potential was always a little better at Rick's. Rick's gets soooo damn crowded that it gets to the point where many guys wind up buying a table dance (or several) just to get a dancer to find them a seat! Of course ultimately each dancer has to find the club she likes best and where she makes the most money. It's high hustle in all NO clubs, but I think Rick's is the most competitive (highest potential), then Gold Club, then Temptations, then the rest... I really don't recommend the rest for travelling dancers. And yes just as vip77 says, any dancer who goes to NO to work at Club A and doesn't like it can just walk a block or so down the street and work at any number of other clubs.

LOL! That is precisely why there is not much money to be made during the final week or two of Mardi Gras! It's been my experience that it's better to work your butt off during the busy times AROUND the end of MG, and just skip work, relax and have fun during the big week(s).

Okay... I have to ask.. since it is such a short time span to work (a couple of weeks or such)... would someone who is an international tourist visiting the area still be able to work those good clubs?

Do I have to have a green card/work visa or anything special like that to work during this busy time in NO?

I've been wanting to visit NO for many years esp. during Mardi Gras. If I can do what is recommened: work for a week or two then enjoy Mardi Gras... then I will do that.
