    Default Back Problems

I have had back problems for about 3 years now, and it just keeps getting worse, I have been to see chiropractors, physios, osteopaths, accupuncture, massage therapists, you name it. Mainly my upper back, shoulders, neck, but my problems are getting worse, I really don't want to stop dancing because of this. Does anyone have any advice for reducing the pain, or anything that would help? ???

This may seem weird but it can't hurt to try it...

I had horrible back and hip pain from an office job (see, I'm not cut out for it ). I was going to a massage therapist for it but it never really relieved it. My regular Doctor had me cut out coffee for an unrelated problem and lo and behold... no more back or hip pain! It took about two weeks to get to that point.

Now, if you don't drink caffeine... don't know what to tell you.

WELL, DO YOU DO ANY POLE WORK AT ALL? BECAUSE IF YOU DO THAT IS MAINLY WHY YOUR UPPER BACK & SHOULDERS ARE HURTING....MAYBE YOU SHOULD ASK YOU DOCTOR FOR A PRESCRIPTION CALLED "CELEBREX". IT HAS REALLY HELPED WITH MY KNEE AND BACK PAIN FROM DANCING.

Thanks for all your advice. I do drink a lot of coffee, but I'm trying to cut down I'm down to 2 a day but I get headaches if I don't drink it. I do heaps of pole work, I think that is where my back pain originated from, though I have toned it down a lot because of back problems. I have heard of celebrex before, its really expensive here in NZ, but I will find out more about it. Thank you.

I had been in a major car accident a few year ago. NOTHING was helping my back. My friend who's an actress told me about this class at her studio called the Alexander technique. It's a way of allowing your neck and back to have total freedom in alignment. I know it sounds kinda weird. It is. First day of class the teacher even said that he feels he teaches a class about nothing. But it worked. It's amazing. They teach you how to use your neck and back. It's not about how you hold yourself or posture. It's hard to explain but see if there's a teacher in your area to find out more about it.

Thanks for your advice. I stopped doing pole work for a bit because my back got so painful, and the pain pretty much went away. I just feel strange dancing and not using the poles. I started using the poles again not long ago and lo and behold my back pain got worse.

My best friend is also a drama student and she swears by the alexander technique.

yoga yoga yoga! It fixes everything. I have come across alot of people who have cured major back problems through yoga and I notice on the days that I don't do it I am alot more sore and tense then on the days I do. Its not a quick fix though its something you have to stick with... but with all the other benefits you get from it you will soon become hooked

    I agree with Krys,
yoga is slow fun and takes mind and body! Get a book on yoga for the back, or back problems, and take it slow, stretch it out, and enjoy!

I don't know if you have a condition or not you did not say. So i would stay with something easy and stretching.

    Good luck,
    Pamela

I had 2 severe car accidents within a 4 year time period. Also I have huge boobs [boobies] so ya my neck and back hurt alot also. I have a doc that prescribes pain meds for me but I dont like taking that stuff. It makes me feels hot, tired, and cranky followed by cotton mouth. Hate em!! I've had the same bottle for a year now. But anyways I really like pilates, yoga, and weight lifing. Running dor me just makes it worse. I notice alo of light weightlifing helps significantly. Try up right rows on a smith machine and a lot of lower back exercises. I used to take power lifting classes in high school and they made me use a belt when I lifted and I even noticed it helped too.

what do you mean by a condition? Do you mean if the doctor has told me something specific is wrong with it?

I struggled with back pain in high school and college, and ended up going to a clinic for it run by a guy named Pete Egoscue. A few other people I knew had gone there for back pain and they had great results, so I took their advice and went to see him.

I walked in in pain and walked out an hour later feeling much, much better.

He uses a series of relaxation techniques, stretches, and strenghthening exercises. I could show you how to do them in person, but they're pretty hard to describe in text.

He's written a book about his techniques: link to Amazon. I haven't read it, but it looks like the reader reviews are quite positive.

I'll try to describe two of the stretches very briefly. (These should be done barefoot.)

    1. (Lower back relaxation.) Lie down flat on your back. Use a chair or some other elevated surface to put your right leg up on. (You should bend at right angles at your right hip and your right knee, so that your thigh is vertical and your calf is horizontal. Your your left hip and knee are kept straight so that your left thigh and calf are horizontal along the ground.) Relax, and let gravity pull your lower back muscles down to the ground. When you first start, you'll be able to barely slide your hand in between your lower back and the ground. When you are sufficiently relaxed, your back muscles will stretch and go all the way down to the ground so you can no longer fit your hand underneath. When this happens, slide yourself a bit away from the chair so your hip and knee are no longer bent at right angles (i.e., your knee should no longer be directly above your hip, but should be somewhat forward). Your lower back will rise a bit off the ground again in this new position. Keep relaxing until gravity lets it drop back down to the floor.

Now switch legs and do it again, this time with the left leg up on the chair. (This should take about 20 minutes per leg.)

    2. (Hamstring stretch.) Go over near the wall. Lie down flat on your back with your feet up against the wall, your legs pointing up into the air. (Your heels should be touching the wall.) Keep your legs straight, and slide your butt in as close to the wall as you can, so your legs are perpendicular to the rest of your body. You'll probably start out with your butt about six inches away from the wall. If you can get closer, that's even better. Keep your legs totally straight, and try to point your toes back down toward your face. You will feel a stretch in your hamstrings as you do this. Try to relax your lower back as you stretch. You will feel your lower back pressing down onto the floor. (This should feel good.) Once your hamstrings and back have adjusted and you're no longer feeling an acute stretch, slide your butt an inch or two closer to the wall, and keep stretching your hamstrings by pointing your toes back toward your face. Your goal is to get your bet all the way against the wall, although this may not happen your first day. (Everybody's different, but this is the stretch that really made my back feel immediately better.)

    Good luck!

I don't think your back pains come from pole work. You are suspended when you do pole work. It relieves the stress from your back. More likely back pain results from poor posture, lifting incorrectly , or doing back bends. You even may want to check the firmness of your bed. Also do a lot of stretching and warm up before doing strenuous work.

Yoga? I might try that. I have had a lower back problem for almost three years. And to make matters worse, I slipped and fell on my lower back because of ice on a path quite recently. I don't want to have chronic back pain so anything is worth a shot.

One of my old yoga instructors 'fixed' himself with yoga. He had a disc problem in his lower spine from many years of playing professional rugby and the doctors wanted to fuse his bones together which would of left him in a wheel chair. He was in so much pain he could hardley walk but he asked them if they could wait a year to see if he could work though it. He started yoga and after awhile was walking and feeling better then ever before at the age of 54! After that this 'rugby head' manly man started teaching because he was so convinced of yogas healing properties.
    Amazing but true.
