If doctors are in it to "help people" why does EVERY doctor I have EVER seen have a large home and several cars usually including a mercedes or bmw ? Wouldn't they rather donate this money to the american cancer society ?

A lawyes does an oath too, promising honesty, are all lawyers honest ?

    I THINK NOT.

America has the most doctors per capita, the most hospitals, and the most advanced technology, why are americans 22 on the list of counteries with the longest life ?

The only profession I am aware of which makes you take a vow of poverty is certain RC priests. Would you go through 4 years of Med school and a good number more of internship a $20,000/year income if you were not anticipating being paid well? The NFL and MLB MINIMUM salaries are more than what doctors make on average in a year.

Arnold Schwartzenegger drives a Hummer. Should he be forced at gunpoint to give it to a school teacher if he wants to be governor?

So monty are you admitting that doctors go to medical school with the intentions of haveing a high paying job, not because they want to help prople.

Everybody knows arnold is rich, he has been in numerous movies, poor analogy.

Of course doctors are influenced by the same economic considerations every one else is in choosing careers. They are not stupid.

And the life expectancy in Greece in Hippocrates time was about 35. Today it is over 80.

I have no doubts that a number of factors affect life expectancy. Note the life expectancy at birth and the birth rate per 1000 are inversely related. Those under 5 and over 65 are most vulnerable to opportunistic infections. The fewer people under 5 there are, the higher the life expectancy. Diet clearly plays a role--the Japanese are near the top of the list and eat a leaner more fish-rich diet. Genetic differences also play a role. There is only one country in your top 25 from North and South America.

Hippocrates was a Greek physician born in 460 BC on the island of Cos, Greece. He became known as the founder of medicine and was regarded as the greatest physician of his time. He based his medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body. He held the belief that illness had a physical and a rational explanation. He rejected the views of his time that considered illness to be caused by superstitions and by possession of evil spirits and disfavor of the gods.

Hippocrates held the belief that the body must be treated as a whole and not just a series of parts. He accurately described disease symptoms and was the first physician to accurately describe the symptoms of pneumonia, as well as epilepsy in children. He believed in the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air and cleanliness. He noted that there were individual differences in the severity of disease symptoms and that some individuals were better able to cope with their disease and illness than others. He was also the first physician that held the belief that thoughts, ideas, and feelings come from the brain and not the heart as others of him time believed.

Hippocrates traveled throughout Greece practicing his medicine. He founded a medical school on the island of Cos, Greece and began teaching his ideas. He soon developed an Oath of Medical Ethics for physicians to follow. This Oath is taken by physicians today as they begin their medical practice. He died in 377 BC. Today Hippocrates is known as the "Father of Medicine".

If I introduce good ideas, why are you always negating all of them ? Do you just like to argue ? Or just have nothing better to do ?

I added a few years to not bias the estimates for improvement upwards. These were from Rome about the same time.

Note I said at birth. If you madde it to 10 you would expect to make it to 50.

And Alexander the Great who was king only made it to 35 and was not assassinated or killed in battle.

Hey, if you are for doctors and the pharmaceutical world, more power to you. I was simply voicing my opinion that I choose a different path in life. I dont have a "problem" per se, my beliefs are just different than yours.

I agree that Ryan seems to have studied up on his beliefs in what he argues. But I don't agree Ryan, that you just simply voice your opinion in choosing a different path in life. You cram down our throats how wrong we must be in choosing diet, choosing doctors, etc... Do you realize that the start of this post has nothing to do with what you turned it into?
